I rang Graeme up to discuss a hand from his recent lesson on fourth suit forcing - I wasn't expecting we'd get a trumpet performance as well!
With this hand, Graeme illustrates how helpful fourth suit forcing can be when we know we want the auction to continue but we're not yet able to decide our best contract.
Then, playing through the hand, we have a wonderful challenge: we must figure out how can we look for some extra tricks without losing the lead to the most dangerous opponent.

I was taught that bidding the 4th suit showed half a stop and asked partner to bid N.T if he or she also had a half stop but if no half stop make their best alternative bid.

There's always some element of risk, but here the odds seem good for N. S does not like c or h and bids FSF in preference to 2s. N 'knows' S was game points, probably at most 5s 2h and 3c, leaving at least 3d. N can reason that if S has Ace , King or Jack of d then 3nt is on, as W will be on lead and almost certain to lead a d, as was the case here. This all seems very likely given s points.
