Interesting to hear what it's like for you. It's not like that for me. The mountain analogy is fine while you have a precise understanding of the goal but I think most people fail at defining that. They don't understand their goal so they never know if they're getting closer and they never hit it. Wandering in circles around the mountain range, to use your analogy. Before they set out on their long walk, they don't stop to think why they are beginning it in the first place. So when they see the second peak, they lose motivation because they don't know what need they are fulfilling. You can create something from nothing with crayons and paper, it doesn't need to be game dev. Finally, it's important to know that's it's ok to stop. You don't have to keep going. If the game dev isn't meeting your needs then it's ok to stop and reassess what it is you need and then do that. It might be a different game or working in a team or not game dev at all. It's ok to fall fast. Don't keep plugging away at something unless it nets your needs.

I've been trying to make games for freaking ages now. The need to tell a story in form of a game, and/or in form of a book or in form of music, has been there on and off for years and years. I'm 38 yo now, and it has been hard af to make a game. And it feels like I am so effin late to the scene, as I have been for everything else though. I tip my hat to you all who are making your stories come true. It is a treasure to have someone that you can relate to, at least at some level. For some, it is like, you have to map every square-centimeter of the world around in order to find the archway at the end of the valley right in front of you. Thanks for the video!

Don't give up. Long story short: I wasted 10 years of "learning" coding. I started and stopped again and again and again... not enough motivation, procrastination, searching for excuses, etc. - just wasting time. The worst part is that even now I don't know what I want to do - gamedev, 3D modeling, cybersecurity(I've been interested for a while now) or something else that doesn't include computers at all. I don't have a clear goal and I can't figure it out. The feeling from all the wasted year and the pain of regret that I didn't put enough effort is extremely big and it is like an anchor, anchor that doesn't allow me to do anything and move forward. Every time I start doing something I feel like it's not worth it and I lose hope. - To all the people who are struggling - don't give up at your dreams, make the effort.🏋 - I wish you all the best in the world. 🌄

It's never too late to start or jump back in. If you never do then you'll never know what you'll be able to accomplish and you'll always have that thought of, "Man, wish I could make a game." I'm 33. So, a bit younger than you but I've had similar thoughts. I didn't have any background in coding, game design, marketing, none of that. To be fair, I haven't released a game or anything like that either, but it's been something I've been slowly chipping away at. Trying to improve my skills, flesh out ideas that I have and hopefully hone the craft until I can make something that I think is worthwhile to sell. And I know even then, it's still a long way to the top if I want to turn it into something that can actually act as any sort of real income. But I don't have any thoughts of giving up just yet. Gotta keep going! Wishing you the best, man!

A year and a half since taking the first step. . and I'm not ready to ever stop lol. . of course, there are so many times when you just feel like you're not progressing at all, but overall the experience was a lot of fun

When you already climbed up a lot. Then you show your progress to others, but their not happy. So you realize that you have to backtrack half the journey to find a different route. Just to get stuck at choosing the new route. Which can take longer than the entire climb so far cause your unsure and feel down from the setback.😐

Personally have posted one game on itch, nothing came out of it, no one played it, but its there I guess? Not sure what to work on now though since I really don't think I learned anything from it.

Part of it seems to be doing a lot of RU-vid videos and then explaining the games are late due to the large amount of videos produced 😅

One of the things that I really fucking hate about RU-vid game development channels, is that in recent years they have collapsed into 2 types of shit: Dani clones ("4 developers making a game WITHOUT COMMUNICATING!!11!1!") or guru likes "the power is within you" gay speeches channels. Very little substance like new technologies, new tools, solutions to design problems and actual progress.

Brandon does post a lot of how-to's, and some of them are at the very least kind of interesting. But I don't really come for tech help. I do enjoy his interviews and devlogs, but mainly, I just come to hear the voice of the struggling hero who sold his house for the dream. I come when my motivation is flagging and my faith is falling. I come for a shot in the arm. And videos like this one are exactly what I appreciate most.

Hi man, and congrats! I have watched some of yours videos now and then from start of your chanel, so, my thoughts. First, great job! I watched you grew and you did really amazing improvments on all fields! I was making my way into gamedev as total noob, as I before 2020 couldnt even call myself a gamer, I was selling smoked meat at markets. First line of C# I saw in early 2021, and next year I will release my own souls-like game on steam. So, climed lot of mountains. And no mountain scared me. Good luck on your journey!

What I'm really struggling with is how do components communicate with each other interact properly, like two state machines that change their behaviour based on each other (Cam/Movement/Weapon). Still trying to find the perfect way to make this easily maintainable...

@@nuin9937 I.e. holding on to a ledge and move alongside of it, so moving my character (Capusle), while playing the right animation depending on the type of movement and overwriting the rigging with IK to put the hands accordingly. Or grab an enemy from behind, so my Capsule and the EnemyCapsule stick and move together, while playing the right animation for being grabbed (entering grab rootstate), move with enemy (move substate) and kill enemy to transition out of the root state back to base idle rootstate. So my movement-fsm, camera-fsm, rigging-fsm and enemy with all its fsm's need to work properly together.

@@Diablokiller999 you could have a component that has references to your camera and player that sort of holds a shared state that the player and camera can both reference. For the enemy you can give it an interface like IGrabbableEnemy and just call its Grabbed function when you GetComponent on it
