What is going on with Ken Tamplin? - With Lexi The Red. 

Fil literally said he can tell that Ken is pretty talented. IMO, its pretty sad that Ken feels the need to lie. He clearly still has talent; he should accept that his voice has changed and roll with it. You can't belt like that forever. But then again, he seems to be pretty self-obsessed apparently. I had seen some of his videos in the past, and I was impressed with his voice. Then I watched a few more and noticed something "off". I was only like 17 or 18 at the time, so I didn't realize what I was noticing yet. I wound up forgetting about Ken for well over a decade, went off and started in my own bands and writing my own music as best I can. After being in the business of doing everything the DIY way, then taking a few audio production and music production classes in person - it became clear that Ken was not being fully honest when I discovered him again. His videos are generally done in a way to make the layman think that he's doing all of it live when that is simply not the case, and its very clear to anyone who does any kind of music/video production. Funny enough, right when I remembered his videos existed, this lip sync thing was what was going on with him once I looked him up further to see more. If Fil hadn't made a video, someone else eventually would have.

Ken can sing and play guitar...But this is all about a Narcissistic person trying to come across as perfect....Nuff said.

Have you not seen all the comments all over the places saying he sucks, can't play guitar, etc etc? Sorry, Ken did not come up with any of that.

@KevinWayne There are videos of him playing guitar live in a room.His acoustic is buzzing like crazy but he can play.Iam 57 and played in bands and it's him playing.I didn't say he was great at either but he does have some talent.Just not as much as he thinks.

Hopefully when it dies down though enough people will recognize him for the fraud that he is and he won't be getting any attention anymore

If Ken had just kept his head down it would have blown over, I think he probably has the wrong people around him or something

His whole gig is conning singers into thinking that if they give a load of money, they’ll learn the secret of being able to hit notes that are currently outside their range. That’s why he’s so invested in showing off his ability to hit really high notes (including the ones he can’t actually hit anymore, hence the lip-syncing to thirty-year-old backing tracks). When you think about it, therefore, it makes much better business sense to present himself as a natural baritone who taught himself to sing in the tenor range, rather than as a natural tenor.

@@MikePhillips-pl6ov Yes. I've learned a lot about acts that I've never paid much attention to, or didn't evem know about. I'm not so interested in the contemporary stuff, but he covers acts going all the way back to the 1920s, and all different genres.

@@crunchyfrog63, Fil hit my radar about a year or more ago. For me it was his take on Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt", that started me off. Which being a fan of Cash and Country music it caught my interest. I followed Fil off and one, but a few months back decided to subscribe. Getting me to subscribe to any channel is a difficult to do thing.

Oh yes! Better than Freddy according to him 🤣. And also apparently was the best guitarist in the world. There are thousands of great guitarists ahead of Tamplin. And also according to him, has been asked to join Queen after Freddy died, INXS after Michael died, Journey and Motley Crue 🤣🤣 and many more but he turned them all down so that he could be at home and be a good father. The problem is that he has told his son all of this rubbish and his son truly believes in his father, which is just a disgusting thing to do as a parent. Just sickening!!

To be strictly fair: What Tamblin says in that video at the 2:38 mark is _not_ word-for-word from the book, and could equally well be paraphrasing Wikipedia or any one of a number of other such WWW sources.

That's all very well and having engineered myself respect but ultimately the guy has said he's singing live and he's not. End of. He's playing notes on a guitar that are NOT on the guitar. That comes under my definition of fraud. To then go all out Mi5 to deny gaslight and tell the world to 'move on' is complete bollocks. The guy is a fraud and he's taking people's money for it. He's been called out and is justifiably getting world wide slammed for it. Sounds about right to me

@@gspianoguitar4369 Agree 100%! I clearly said he's being deciectful, in several ways. I was just saying using the fact that there is compression on the vocals isn't really accurate. We use compression live all the time.

In my experience, compression live causes feedback issues so a limiter is often useful for live. What I meant is, that you can hear the compression lifting the quieter vocal aspects that close mic delivers, in a live environment that same sound would generate feedback issues. I used engineer live gigs too...and studio sessions. I never used the same settings in studio that i used live, no matter what rack fx i was working with 🤷

Ya, as I said in my comment, compression live can certainly cause feedback if the tech hasn't rung out the room or had other feedback control measures in place (hardware feedback suppression, Waves X Feedback, Waves Feedback Hunter, etc...) so I totally agree with you on that. I mean a a limiter is a compressor, just with a ratio over 20:1 but I get what you mean I think. Using a limiter to just catch the peaks. It's all subjective and what works for one may not work for another! I'm using the same signal chain I would in the studio with the actors in the show I'm working on right now (It's a musical, Nunsense). Well, not exactly because I don't use Waves plugins for my mixing/mastering work, I only use them live but what I mean is I'm using a DeEsser first (Waves Sibilance), then CLA-2A, then Q10. At some points, I'm pegging the needle (20dB of gain reduction or more) when they are really belting during the show with no feedback at all and plenty of headroom to spare, but I have a hardware feedback unit I use that is fantastic so feedback is rarely an issue for me but like I said, I totally agree compression can be an issue live. Absolutely no question about it! If the room is EQd properly tho you can get away with quite a bit of heavy-handed processing. Cool to know you've worked in both settings too! It's a great job, I'm blessed to do what I do every day! Ahhhh, ok! Now I get it. And again, don't take me the wrong way. I'm not trying to defend Ken here. He's a POS and a liar lol. I just think it's only right if we are going to be critical to make sure we're only coming with facts. I totally get what you mean now. I also hear tons of automation in the parts he is using from the recording as well. Not only with the fx but there are clearly volume rides on the vocals as well. Could this be done live, yes, with the right mixer and computer OR even by hand but this was WAY too smooth to be either of those. I just wish he would be honest! This would go away so much quicker and he could just move on with his life. It's like he doesn't realize the more he lies the more he makes it worse and worse for himself. There are people in this world with much greater knowledge than him in these kinds of things but he doesn't think that which is where I think the problem starts haha!! When I watch Ken I almost get the feeling he thinks we're all stupid lol. Anyway, I rambled long enough. Thanks for your comment Lexi and thanks for the great video. I hope you didn't think I was trying to say you guys were wrong about any of the facts. I just wanted to be fair and say the compression could be replicated live so it isn't a piece of evidence in our favor, unfortunately. I agree Ken is lip-syncing, gaslighting, lying, displays narcissistic tendencies, etc... I'm on your team! 🙂

Good points that should be considered. I play bass guitar and one of the few effects I often use is compression, though of course am still playing 'live' even with the compression on.

The problematic actions are (a) using sockpuppets to repetitively comment positively in Tamplin's defence, (b) deleting _all_ commentary about lead vocals on backing tracks on Tamplin's own videos, (c) deleting several of the videos outright, (d) claiming to be able to still sing this stuff and "demonstrating" this by not singing in the relevant register, (e) personally attacking Fil Henley, (f) accusing Fil of doing stuff that was _actually_ done by people completely unconnected with Fil who have piggybacked off Fil's analysis to post gravedancing videos, and (g) accusing Fil (sic!) of doing (b) and (c). Oh, and posting a bunch of distraction-fallacy bollocks about "cancel culture" and "fake news" and U.S. politics, when the only person even mentioning any of that is Tamplin xyrself (not even the gravedancers).

I do not agree that it has tarnished Fil at all. It has only proved once again, that he is rational and unbiased, his explanations are clear as is his proof.

@@Lexi-The-Red-UK, I've been able to do voice characterizations since around the age of four, and I can tell you that even with practice, that there going to be minute differences that may not be distinguishable o the human ear. Also I know that some of what I did is harder, or no longer within my range to do. Ken is almost sixty one, and acts like his voice hasn't changed a bit it seems. Yet it has.

Can you post a link to your singing at all? Are you looking to project your voice forward so the room can hear you, without a mic...?

They teach Bel Canto in Italy (I was taught that), and Japan (my students came here knowing that), so it is very much alive a kicking even today.

He probably does know his stuff, he's been singing and performing a long time by the looks of it. Singers get into habits, and habits can be hard to unpick especially if you like the sound and want to keep it. I don't think he'll teach those habits though, but that then brings in a question of authenticity...students like to know you practise what you teach. And every student deserves continuous feedback otherwise the student will make avoidable mistakes, which no one wants.

Yes it is easy to do things wrong, and doing so can do damage to the very delicate instrument that are our vocal chords.

As someone that does voice characterizations, one of the worst things you can do us strain the vocal chords, to reach pitches that has moved out of your range, with aging.
