The Tyra Banks Show - ''African American women's hair'' (Recorded May 12, 2009, WWOR) We're getting to the root of the African-American "good hair" phenomenon. Find out how hair impacts the community's culture and even self-esteem.
The mother who's ashamed of her daughter: what has happened to this woman's mind? That she rejects her daughter so thoroughly she has effectively disowned her. Oh my sweet lord.
Wtf? Why does every relaxed girl on here think that your hair has to be relaxed to be long? Your hair can be natural and long (in fact, you're more likely to maintain that length if you DON'T relax it).
Tessitura9 I am guy but can't girls use a flat iron to strighten their hair, heat damage can be avoided with skill and use of products, even so it less DESTRUCTIVE than -Sodium Hydroxide!- Relaxer.
Oh definitely. Everyone is different. BUT, that's like asking if there are people who smoke cigarettes without getting lung cancer (a bit exaggerated, I know lol). Yes, you CAN flat iron your hair and maintain length, it happens all the time. But will it damage your hair in the process? Most definitely. Obviously the more often you do it, the more likely you are to have no hair lol. That's why some naturals don't use heat at all, others use it 1x a yr, some 2 times a year, some once a month, it's a matter of preference. Most girls with relaxed hair straighten their hair nearly everyday though (I grew up with relaxed hair). Now if you're talking about the creamy crack (aka relaxers), that's different entirely. Your hair WILL break off eventually. There are of course exceptions, but not many. Just take it from an ex-relaxed, natural. It's WAY easier to grow your hair naturally.
Random Note: I think the sister who spoke first is prettier lol. Her hair would more than likely be long if it weren't relax. You can tell by looking at her hair that it is thinning (and probably did some breaking off).
Oh one more thing, also random: The ironic thing about having natural hair (and I learned this recently) is that even straightening your natural hair is 10x better than relaxed straightened hair. When you relax your hair, it's thinner, oily(er), fragile and lifeless. When you straighten natural hair, it's thick, soft and has this shine and you see your natural highlights and it's just crazy how much better it is. I recently went to straighten my hair at a salon and this Russian lady straightened my hair. The shop owner was Asian. All the hair dressers were just floored by (1) how long my hair was compared to how short it looks curly and (2) how thick, soft and long it was. They actually envied the body of my hair.
Tessitura9 Wow that is great useful info thanks! I thought they were products to reduce damage of heat to hair, correct me if I wrong. Some girls always say that "Guys don't like girls with nappy hair". Which is not true since some prefer the natural hair (on some). And the really snappy less reasonable ones go along the lines of "If a man worry about another womans hair they are either broke or gay" ??? Wait WUT?! That has no reasoning! First of even as a teen, I see no sense on spending that much on hair and ontop of that it damages. And normally I say that stuff because it is dangerous and I actually prefer a girl with natural hair, I don't mind TOO much what style she decides to wear at different points, but at least it healthy right? I guess....
I HAAAAAAATE when black folks say anyone is "going natural"...Uh...you're not GOING anywhere. That's the ENTIRE POINT. You are STAYING natural and not conforming. So Stay natural folks...stay natural...
going natural obviously means from having relaxed, non natural hair to going back natural. not all of us have the chance to stay natural, just like these kids, im 19 now, but my mom relaxed my hair when i was 5, i didn’t have a choice, and im about to go back natural.
@@NyaKuany I know what they are TRYING to say but no you're still STAYING natural bc the point of origin is natural. You're no longer "going relaxed" and instead STAYING natural. That's my point.
Its true a confident woman can wear her own hair. I worry about styling cause my hair short, I WANT A NICE BRAID UP. I AM FORCED TO GO NATURAL BECAUSE OF BREAKAGE.
NAPPY HAIR DOES NOT EQUAL "BAD HAIR"! BAD HAIR IS NEGLECTED, UNHEALTHY AND DAMAGED! NAPPY HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL! IT HAS THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICA BUILT INTO IT!
i dont understand why they dont think their natural hair is beautiful? i am indian and have long, wavy hair but i think the tightly coiled curly hair looks gorgeous! i just dont understand.
I just think everyone wants what they don't have. I have natural hair and I love it but everyone who compliments me and say they wish they had my hair don't know what effort it takes to keep it healthy. You have to be patient and also self-loving ^_^
my mom was soooo mad at me when i cut my hair and went natural, because we always had hair down our backs and I cut it to a little below my ears and now it's down my back again!
my family was the same. they would be so mad everytime I cut my hair. I would gradually cut it then put weave in it. one day I was completely natural and everyone was like😲. lol
nancyjunkie Yes, I can understand that sister jealousy thing... my two younger sisters who were close in age had a sister jealousy/rivalry thing going on... they are both beautiful, but I guess each thought the other one had someone on the other...lol
Women, not just black women give some so much importance to long hair it's ridiculous and sad. A few years ago, my cousin was diagnostied with a brain tumor. She had to go through surgery almost imediately. When we announced it to our family, the first thing some members said was "oh no will she have to shave her hair? Oh but it is so long!" I never side eyed someone so hard in my life.
LucidlyJackie thats not why. Our hair grows all the time. Its just that our hair tends to break at the same rate that it grows, so that it appears unable to show how much it has grown.
Garcia Tepano Thank you. Thankfully the surgery went well and the tumor wasn't cancerous. The recovery wasn't easy (headaches, short memory loss, anxiety...) but she is doing great now.
I think everyone has 'good hair' unless it is unhealthy... like mine heh -_- I have major split ends and ratty hair from not getting a cut in 4 years.. that is bad hair. The dreads and afros are all good hair. Just gota keep it healthy :)
What Ayana said made me realize just what is wrong with our people. We really have come a long way. I honestly never thought about it that way and it's no wonder why a lot of men in particular are so in your face about what we do with our hair. People say black people are obsessed with hair, you now have an idea where it comes from. Now I never really had time to understand my natural hair since my mother straightened it when I was about 6 or 7. Since then I tried going back natural twice. First time was when I was at school and the teasing got overbearing, plus I didn't know what to do, people would quarrel with my older sister about my 'unkempt' appearance. My hair was always an active topic at school and it hurt so I ended relaxing it, even after when I started working, it was always something about my hair. I decided to try it again just over a year ago. Never again will a relaxer touch my hair.
My parents love my natural hair. I remember when I first went natural, my mom looked at me and said, welcome home :-). My dad said, now this is my daughter.
Yeeah, I like both natural and straight hair. I think I'd look great with my natural hair, but I'd only want to wear it long, and I don't think I could deal with all of the length. I like my short straight hair. While I admire the women who decided to go natural to combat a damaging Eurocentric beauty standard, I just won't do it. I tried going natural, and while it didn't look awful, I didn't feel like myself. I know that sounds odd, maybe it's because I've had my hair straightened most of my life, but it is what it is. I just wanted to embrace my natural hair and feel more of black woman, but it doesn't matter what type of hair you have. All that matters is that I/you/we learn my/your/our cultures and appreciate what made me/you/ us who I/you/we am/are.
Me to. I'm only 13 so my mom always wants me to do something with my hair for school so I put water in it and let it curl or I flat iron it. I think because my hair is so long she wants me to straighten it to have a more sleek look but I love both styles
Yaz Valentin well Latino/Hispanic is different, there's all sides of the spectrum, there plenty of Dominican and Puerto Ricans who have black African backgrounds as well as White Europeans,
I am so glad that Tyra did this show! I used to see her all the time with her cornrows on ANTM and I wished she would do this show. I was so happy when she finally did!
Robin Doss They set her up. She doesn't look good because the ends are still straight. And all he did was pull the hair back, it isn't even a style that took any effort.smh. You can see it in her eyes that she didn't like it and she probably went back to the wig. I know I would've.
All hair is good hair, but everyone has different texture of hair and length and people have to stop judging each other because I don't think that anyone is perfect!! and God made everyone in his own likeness and image,so no one can say what hair is beautiful and what hair is not beautiful
As a non black person this really hurt me and saddens me especially the young girls. Your hair is your strength and think about it like this. 🌹 They tried cutting your hair to try and separate you from your ancestors but couldn't cut the spirit of your ancestors.🌹 Always embrace yourself because you have "exotic" features others are so desperate to have today and it's the way the industry/society is so manipulative about everything is just shameful in it self because it acts like a confused person. They like one thing then the next there against it. Europeans have always done that to other races especially Native Americans when they would cut their braids off in the boarding school systems back then. Please look into it because everybody needs to see what the history books are not teaching you in schools. I just feel like you all should embrace you're natural hair and try to work with it like how white people have done for there advantage because you have unique hair that should be embraced and used for you're advantage also Add a fake butterfly to a Afro
i think good and bad hair should be determined (eve if it should be determined) by how strong and healthy it is. hair health is so important and i think that is what we should strive for because the styling and the good look will come afterwards
the pom pom are so cute i wish i was black so i could wear them and look as good as black people. i would hate it if my mother said i have 'bad hair' and forced me to change it for other people
two years ago i decided to go natural against my mom jugement but she never said anything after i did, we don t talk about it but i know that she don't mind last year i discover she was natural for about 20 years, i never knew, cause she has loser curls. she was just scared that i won t get a job and accepted in my job. lol i love her the most....
All the black girls I knew and saw growing up had their hair natural, I rarely saw one with their hair straight. It was mostly in braids or rows. I think the first time I saw a girl with her hair relaxed was in high school and she did it for prom.
I used to have long curly hair when I was younger but then my mum used relaxer on it and it was damaged but recently I've gone natural to maintain and grow it better. Plus I love my natural hair and don't plan to get it relaxed at all love the mixed curl definition since I cut it.
Definitely has been lots of brainwashing! My mom still isn't used to it but she loves me and isn't ashamed. I don't know who started the movement but I'm really glad they did! #MyBlackisBeautiful
I think it's because she looks "too African" with that natural hair. I am so glad that people are so proud of their natural hair now. Can't believe that this was about 10 years ago. So much has changed :).
so happy! you don't know how happy i am to hear that... i'm black and had my hair permed at a very young age. as an adult,i wear my natural hair..under wigs! one day i'll be confident enough to wear my natural hair uncovered.
true I mean I think afros are adorable and I love the feel of that hair because its so soft, there is nothing wrong with having it, black people need to raise above their insecurities and be proud of their race and celebrate being black because black people are just as beautiful as any other race.
that's how my mom was & is. I had mutli cultural hair and that wasn't good enough she wanted my hair relaxed to have it straight & it's damaged my hair and myself
the woman in the end, who had straight hair in the beginning, looks sooooooo gorgeous with her hair all natural!!!! I love it and I believe her close circle- the people she was affraid won't like it- would love it too! her face is so beautiful, it shouldn't stay hidden and the smal curls just compliment her skin and bone structure! thumbs up!
I think its about embracing yourself and not hiding from who you are. I think when u learn to embrace yourself others will follow because they see ur confidence. Its such a struggle to go against the status quo but someone has to do it
I TOTALLY agree with what she said about the older generations being brainwashed. When I cut my hair to go natural my co-worker [an older black woman] ALWAYS had something to say. ALWAYS. Now I have been working there for about 2 years, and I have never seen her actual hair because she wears wigs.
Tolga Eskici Yes, you did imply that I shouldn't say it. You stated that it is formally out of bounds and because I used it in that matter, to kill myself.
Tolga Eskici So now you are coming up with excuses as to why you corrected me on an already correct sentence. I think you were looking in the mirror when you said fool- you were saying it to yourself.
I believe that everyone has good hair, and that what you were born with is beautiful! And when it come to cutting your hair or dying it, it's whatever makes you happy. Some people just want to see change, not to please others but to please themselves
Omg! This is the same situation I'm going through with my mother. She has always put perms in my hair and when I finally decided to go natural she tried to discourage me.
That made me cry as a young black because I've always been told in school (I'm 12 in 7th grade) that my hair is ugly, short, and that I don't belong there. Thank you so much. :)
black women always make excuse about their hair, their hair breaks because they put to much chemicals in it... leave the chemicals and stick to one type of hair product and just be patient with your hair.... black women are to impatient with most things and their hairs an example.
OMG These women have absolutely gorgeous hair. I know it's a history thing and people want what they don't have, but seriously these women are so beautiful and their hair is just amazing.
The winner in the purple dress with her hair natural looks amazing. Natural hair can look professional also, you just have to know what works for you. Her hair definitely works for her
I love my natural, coiled hair! One good thing about having natural hair is that it is so versatile when it comes to styling! I can wear my hair straight, curly, a blow and go, in an afro, twisted, braided, spiral curled, an updo and etc. So many options which means a different style every time!!!! Remember to LOVE YOUR HAIR AND KEEP IT HEALTHY!
It comes from years of being told your hair is bad. I went natural 2 years ago and looking back I can see that I was completely ignorant about how to care for my own hair. It's amazing how deep this issue goes. My mother still tells me I have bad hair. I just stopped listening.
I am in the process of trying to learn how to deal with my hair without a comb completely. I have gone 2 weeks without combing so far. Never comb your hair when it is dry. Again, the combing while wet/dry is another highly debated issue in the natural community so do what works best for you and your hair. Because of my texture, combing while wet works best for me.There is so much more it just would take so long to go through it all.
I have had natural hair all my life, and I can't tell you all the times people told me I needed to relax my hair in order to get a job. They would say that people would not hire me if I had "nappy" hair. This mentality that is still very prevalent in the black community.
My hair has been permed ever since I was 5 but just recently I decided to go natural. My mom said things like "your hair is nappy and unmanageable; its nothing like your dad's" who happens to have very loosely curled hair. But now that Im wearing my natural texture, I realized that it doesn't matter if its nappy, kinky, coily or curly because ALL hair is good hair.
The most important thing for any natural is water. Water is the only thing that really moisturizes the hair. I apply water to my hair every other day even if I just lightly spray over it. I then apply a product either a butter (like Miss Jessie’s baby butter cream) or a conditioner (like the shea moisture product line). I seal the hair with one of the oils I mentioned before. This is to hold the moisture in. That is pretty much the extent of the products you need.
