In Canada French politics are on the news. However, we were not told about the low turnout and the European elections are not really understood. We are being told that most of Western Europe is so sick of the illegal immigration that they will vote far right.
@basdost1284
@basdost1284 3 месяца назад
As a Belgian, yes we're sick of mass (illegal) immigration. Low turnout does not mean more support for far right, usually the opposite tbh. Eurosceptic people tend to skip voting for European elections cause they don't support it. Just look at the Netherlands national vs European election result. PVV did a lot better with higher turnout nationally, than with low turnout European while their support grew even further among the Dutch.

I'm from Malaysia and I started following French politics after Macron's election in 2017. I think one of the reasons why he did it is because the high scores of the extremes and if he couldn't just not do anything and pretended like nothing happened. That would just have made Le Pen unstoppable for 2027. And he wants to take away the number one reason that most RN electors are citing which is "we have never tried the RN". In hopes that for 2027, there will be a chance for a moderate candidate to win.

Hello … 👋🏼 I am from Kuwait 🇰🇼 and i also started to pay interest in french politics since 2017 , one is because president Emmanuel macron had lots of gossip about him, two i was already invested in British politics and the brixit drama a year before it in 2016 , anyway i think that french president had to make a chess ♟️ sacrifice at this stage of his career and government, it had risks and within the next painful 3 years it may come out with better results at least for next election in 2027 with less potential of having radical government in france 🇫🇷, it seems he already predicted the outcome of Europe elections and know he can’t win any score, he had to played endoor political game . Thats a Good observation from you and I agree with your analysis. Take care

Bonjour Theo! I just came back from Paris at the end of May and started watching your videos. I saw signs on buildings,etc. about the election and wondered what it was all about. Voter apathy( very low turnout) is a problem in many democratic countries, especially the US. We are in the middle of a presidential election and with former President Trump being a convicted felon while still running for reelection, well... our media are consumed with this and with the Israeli- Hamas war. Love all of your videos and thanks for the explanation of the French political system.

Thanks for this. I appreciate it, and I am very curious to know what young people are thinking, if they voted, if so how. My impression is that young people all over Europe, especially in France and Germany are embracing the far right. I hope I am wrong. I've had a chance to talk to my friends about this and in attempting to figure out what Macron is up to the following seems to be the consensus among the people I know. First, the tight timeline for the election means that there will be no chance for people not already registered to vote to register. That means that a repeat of the European electins seems very likely. Second, the gambit seems to be very specifically aimed at kneecapping the left in France, the purpose, it is argued, for Macron normalizing the far right over the last few years in the first place. Finally, he cannot expect to win and seems to be hoping that the RN will mess up once in office and will be turned on by an increasingly fickle electorate. If that last is the case, then that is a pretty cavalier gamble with other people's lives and safety. Again thank-you. I follow European politics very closely as I lived in the UK, France and Italy for many years before returning to Canada. My friends here also follow European politics.

Yes it is mentioned in the mainstream media. The implications however are not discussed. Alternative news sources however are discussing this shift. It seems confusing because terms like “far-left” and “far-right” are ambiguous. Different meanings to different people. FAR anything seems extremist and no one wants that. Historically it has been a dangerous occurrence. I don’t think controlling migration should be viewed as extreme. I don’t know what else they are packing in their far right pockets.

In Australia we have compulsory voting, which in my opinion should be implemented in every democracy. We all have a responsibility to say how we want our countries to be governed. I’m speculating, but is it possible that Macron called snap elections in the hope of higher turnout as people are concerned about the prospect of a far right government?
@maten146

Most french people would actually be happy with that "far right government". By the way that "far right government" would be considered left in Australia, french politics is very different. Tbh my YT randomly recommended the video. I might not be much of a reference because I barely watch TV, but I only got to know about this situation now through your video. I'm brazilian. Here voting is an obligation. I recommend doing what you can to interrupt a bad person, to say the least, getting elected. I don't think many people thought Bolsonaro would gain much popularity and end up elected here, yet... It doesn't help the other options sucked and still suck as well. I want to leave my country at the earliest opportunity I get. If France's extreme right ends up in power, I bet people will feel more inclined to vote next time, but it'll surely suck if turns out that way. Get voting, people! Anyways, wish you all the best!

I would like to put forward my opinion in addition(I am not expert but an observer :)), Why far right gaining support, Local people are frusted with - Cost of living increasing - Immigration unchecked (example: criminals and extreemist enter the country making it unsafe) - Geopolitics of Ukraine war (linked with increase in cost) my opinion on snap election is that, it is a risky stratergy however its is essential to see clearly what people want. Now its the test for people to vote and see the consequence. However from the bussiness point of view, if french people are expecting benifits from foreign contries or people, this will definitely scare them as nobody know what decison will far right will take when it is in power in the future. I have seen a couple of reports on the political situation in France, which is exceptional in the United States. I note that you describe the Rassemblement National as far right extremists, but you do not describe the leftists as extremists even though the LFI members clearly are. A French guy once said to me, "In America, you don't have a left, you have only the right and the extreme right." I think that the opposite has always been true in France. You have only the left and the extreme left, to a point that any truly conservative or nationalist party seems extreme. I have listened to the leaders of the RN and Reconquête on RU-vid and they sound like mainstream Republicans in America.(except that the RN is far to the left of American Republicans on economic issues) Are the RN and Reconquête extremists just because hard left journalists and leftist politicians say this is the case? I think that the French should open their minds to a different way of doing things after 40 years of leftist government.

I’ve just begun following this chaos. And here in Denmark we had a kind of similar situation, with the party in power getting very few votes for the EP election. So two other partyleaders has actually called for our prime minister to hold an election, one of them with a reference to Macron as being “more courageous”. But our primeminister denied their request.

Always good to be reminded how more than 50% of people not voting is considered strange elsewhere. As a life long degenerate American I'm always pretty happy if EVEN 50% of an electorate manages to cast a vote...

Théo, Mr. Macron already had no majority. It was unbearable. Remember the demonstrations in March 2023. He should have dissolved Parliament then.

I would imagine that it is because these days so many influential politicians act like kids that 50% of citizens did not vote. Many politicians are simply not up to the role of leadership.

Thank you for explaining the political situation in France and how it works. I am learning the French language and I'm also interested in politics. My husband and I love visiting France and have friends there. I am from the UK and find it very interesting to see how the French people deal with things when they are not happy (or otherwise). They have true strength of character and are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. I will look forward to more of your videos in future.

Excellent explainer! I was in France last week as this was happening. I saw my cousin the evening after he voted and then a few days later. He was also shocked by what was happening. And, yes, I am seeing news about this in the United States. I follow financial news and business journalists are reporting on the France political situation and what the implications would be in the financial world if the far right dominates in France after these next elections.

American living in France now so following le feuilleton every day. My opinion is that France is special because of how much the various politicians truly and deeply hate one another (few exceptions of course but as a general rule).

Your video was first in my queue. I hope it all turns out. In the US, the far right, specifically, DJT supporters, have caused, by the numbers/data, an increase in violence (domestic, race, society at large) and division. There truly is cause for concern. By the way, the breadth, depth and scope of your English excellent.

Although I love the idea of Pécresse slapping Ciotti in the face (edit to say: I've checked and it was fake news, I hate/love how disappointed I am haha), I've never been as anxious for the future of our country as I have been this past week. To say it's a mess is an understatement. You seem way calmer than I am though, which somehow soothes me a bit. Les Français, aux urnes !
