forlorn, flickering candlelights of civilization known as Ten-Towns and sheds light on
the many bone-chilling locations that surround these frontier settlements.

A minor homebrew variation by the DM (credit to Zee Bashew) would fix this - although that's assuming you can even find the needed mistletoe reagent in that entire region. Still doesn't solve a lot of the survival elements players would face in such a place. But by far the greatest threats appear when the party is traveling. It is never a good day when a Remorhaz decides to come up from beneath the ice. My own group was attacked by a stray one in the middle of winter just south of Neverwinter, and we lost a player character along with his magic items before it decided to head off after taking damage (50/50 on group wipe if it had stayed). For an unprepared team (read: most casual groups) such threats are usually fatal...

I'm assuming "rime" here is a double-entendre, since The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (in that sense, meaning more of a lyrical story) is also about being horrifically isolated in a hostile environment.
@aliceofspades
@aliceofspades 4 года назад
I hadn't thought of that! I certainly hope it is!
@Eowar
@Eowar 4 года назад
"rime" has 2 highly different definitions "frost formed on cold objects by the rapid freezing of water vapor in cloud or fog" and "a film or slimy coating". It's also a homophone of "rhyme". The spelling used for the Ancient Mariner is considered obsolete, but that doesn't prevent writers from using it in tongue-in-cheek ways like this.
@EmilM-pb2hn
@EmilM-pb2hn 3 года назад
@@Eowar Consider a character such as an old arctic fisherman. His beard, covered with rime (frost). He has left all old worries behind, and is consumed by his practice of fishing. Eventually, a journalist comes to interview him. The journalist notices the fisherman is covered by rime (frost), but it isn't in a physical sense, it's his past- frozen, abandoned, cold. This is a thought I had reading your comment. Had I been an author, I could see myself using that analogy toward the title of a book. Although it is too simple.
@aktiont4161

One thing I'm very interested in is if there's creatures that could serve as a beast ranger companion. Like the revised one that's actually good. I'm hoping for a kinda large badgery boy that's actually built for cold.

There's something about dnd books that gets me exited no matter what they are abount. Maybe it is because wizard always delivered with their 5e products (in my book)

Really looking forward to more of the world being explored as well as new monsters. I will say I am reluctant to see "horror" and "Mystery" in a D&D setting. Maybe it's just my playgroup but there are a few very well-read and intelligent players that I have the pleasure of DMing and they can sherlock a story so quickly. I had a case were off a few clues they sarcastically guessed the end twist of the campaign and as a DM I cried a little on the inside.

Being scared triggers adrenaline and that sets off our core instincts. It set us up for the "3 f's" fighting, fleeing and reproduction. That kind of excitement feels good in small doses.

Im pretty sure if fear is gone, youre just left with one f... Reproduction. Im pretty sure without fear youll cuddle with your enemy.

Are we going back to Second Edition style monsters where every encounter was practically a death sentence should we instruct our players to come with like five character sheets I remember those days
@christofferhougaard

That sounds... Anti dramatic. You'd never be able to like a character and delve into them if they constantly die. I don't know about you good Sir but... To me personally that sounds awful. :c

I hope that Spurt will have a Cannon presence in the book. I really miss him Chris! I hope you have nudge him in the book some where! I would love to see Spurt in an adventure. (For those who dont know Spurt is, he is a kobold inventor that chris played in Critical Role for about 30 minutes and got killed but was so awesome character that he needs to be reintroduced!)
