I don’t give a damn back in the 80s when we were really poor I mixed it with mayonnaise and made a fucking sandwich out of it with cheese and I still fucking do it!!!
C P if you guys live in Harrisonburg like me I think you should go to this place near funkys besides you go the opposite way and you’ll see a place called Hokkaido and its a sushi buffet little less pricey than a restaurant and if your a parent that has a kid that don’t like seafood they have different stuff like zucchini with stake and rice corn dog nuggets and more but I like sushi if you see this you should try it out
Thanks to the Japanese for inventing this, the only way I could come close to seafood (crustaceans), which I am allergic to. They really taste so good.
Because it resembles the meat from a crab leg. That said, I still like it in small doses but really wonder which is healthier, a fast food burger or imitation crab. I usually use it added to a salad so I'm guessing it's reasonably healthy eaten this way.
eddie Imitation crab is definitely healthier. It’s pretty much just lean fish protein maybe some carbs depending if the brand you bought has added sugars or starch to the fish paste. Fast food burgers have a lot more stuff that you should somewhat limit in you diet like saturated fats and simple carbohydrates from the buns. Of course like most things they’re fine in moderation.
eddie LMFAO you clearly have no clue what fish cakes are do you. Fish cakes don’t look like a fish, it ranges from different colors and shapes; a common 1 is the ones use in ramen with the pick swirls in the center call naruto.
Marjo you clearly don’t know what fish cakes are, there’s already a term use for fish that are made in such a manner similar to how bologna sausages are made; it’s call fish cake. Go google asian fish cake; it shouldn’t be hard to do
According to the package about 3% crab meat and mostly a mixture of whatever types of fish is left over after the good cuts, salt, water, and maybe a preservative or two. It’s basically the hotdog of the seafood world.
Imitation crab meat is inexpensive, taste great and in a salad with lettuce, tomato, grn onion , avocado, hard boiled egg and my wife's home made dressing is a treat for me to eat. BTW; the quality of taste and texture varies by brand
Oh my gaaaad! Not gluten! Gluten is almost as bad as diehygrogenmonoxide! Did you know dihydrogenmonoxide is used in almost every harsh chemical product? Scary, i know. Therefor its bad.
They just mean people who are intolerant could order it, thinking they are fine, and then get f'd up badly uknowingly . It'd be the same case of it potentially containing peanuts or smthing. There isn't any warning, from my experience
Some people develop shellfish allergies randomly, like I did one day when eating shrimp, same thing happened to my sister, we can no longer have shrimp/lobster/crab, so having the imitation stuff as an option is pretty nifty
@@pokelynke8232 Oh ok thanks well I sorta got the impression that you two were both either vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian or lacto-vegetarian. And if you don't know or never heard of these different types of vegetarianism terms definition then here is the written source examples from a website that I found. 👇🏽 • An _ovo-vegetarian_ is a person who does not eat meat or dairy products but does eat _eggs and egg-derived ingredients._ This type of vegetarian doesn't eat dairy, including milk, cheese, ice cream or butter. Very few people follow an ovo-vegetarian diet as compared with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet, a vegan diet, or even a lacto-vegetarian diet. • Lacto-vegetarian is a term sometimes used to describe a vegetarian who does not eat eggs, but does eat dairy products. In other words, a _lacto-vegetarian_ diet includes all plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains and beans, as well as dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter, goat cheese, goat's milk and any other products made from these foods such as ice cream.
In England, when I was younger. they were called crab sticks; last decade they've been called seafood sticks! They're considered longlife chill items at UK superkarkets, I.e same delivery as cheese and yoghurt etc...
It isn't bad in a salad and take it from a crab fisherman, it's a bunch easier to use then the real thing. I made real crab stuffed mushrooms for Xmas. I took the meat out of three crabs. What a pain in the ass. I finally got good at it but for things like salads or hors-d'oeuvres I will simply buy canned crab meat.
I love this. It doesn't taste or look anything like real crab, but it is still very delicious and is not as mushy as crabmeat. I like it in chunks in stir fries, in soup with ramen noodles and shredded and mixed with mayonnaise and lemon juice in a sandwich.
It tastes great with red onions, cilantro, tomatoes , a smidgeon of jalapeños and lime juice , and deveined cooked shrimp, eat with tortilla chips and tapatio sauce.
I must admit to a weakness for this stuff. It’s cheaper than any other seafood & I can eat a whole pound of it straight out of the package, dipped in balsamic vinegar.
I tried the "lobster" version as an adult and went right back to craving it.. cannot eat the crab one anymore tho, don't know why, maybe ate too much as a kid
They add random fish and seafood, and small portions of real crab might be one of them. The stupid thing about it though is that a lot of people who love imitation crab eat it specifically because we're allergic to real crab meat. So don't add any to it!!
🤣 don't why that happens. Kinda like when your thinking of something to search and before you can even finish typing it there it is 😲 Sometimes I get scared because I think the FBI is listening through our phones
Back in the 1970's my I talked my mother into buying fake crab. It messed up my whole perspective on crab meat. Once I became an adult, I then learned that crabmeat is the best tasting of all of the crustaceans.
After the king crab in Norway closing in on 100 us dollars a kilo, krab sticks with mayo gives me something similar to the real thing and is OK for me!!
One of my local grocery stores uses initiation krab and tiny shrimp to make a seafood salad. They add fresh veggies and zesty Italian dressing It’s really good
Dear Mashed: Read this: Imitation crab meat contains carmine. What is carmine? Carmine (also called Cochineal extract) is made from the dried bodies of female Dactylopius coccus costa, a small beetle commercially grown in Peru, Costa Rica and the Canary Islands. Pregnant insects are fed red cactus berries, and color from the berries accumulates inside the females and their larvae. The pregnant insects are gassed, collected, dried, and ground up to make a very crimson pigment. It takes about 70,000 bugs to produce one pound of carmine powder, which is the red color in frozen pollack or imitation crab. Carmine is used in cosmetics, pharmaceutical coatings, fillings, cake icings, and hard candy. In the liquid form, it is found in bakery products, yogurt, soft candy, ice cream, gelatin desserts, milk-based and alcoholic beverages, fruit syrups, pet foods, jams, preserves, and even processed meat. It is also used in hair and skin care products, lipsticks, face powders, and blushes. How would women react if they knew their makeup was made with ground up bugs? Carmine is not FDA-required to be listed on food labels because it is considered a natural product. Beware of any food substance colored red. Read the label for carmine, carminic acid, cochineal extract, or any coal tar dyes like Red Dye #3 or Red Dye #40. Some more nutritionally conscious companies substitute beet juice extract instead of these poisons.
Imitation crab sliced into 1 inch cubes & seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, and simmered in light butter for a few minutes, is great with Spanish rice.
SoulEchelon yeah i’m glad I wasn’t the only one that noticed that. I mean, I know we eat meat all the time and animals die for it but that was pretty rough to watch
Anytime I go to the Picadilly Restaurant, I have the 'seafood salad'. It has a little minced onion, celery, mayo and lemon juice, served on a bed of lettuce. It's delicious. Occasionally I make it at home. I guess if we could see how a lot of items we eat are prepared and packaged, like hot dogs, it would turn our stomachs. I try not to think about it and just eat it!😁
I love imitation crab. When I have leftover Yorkshire puddings (which I make a lot) I make ‘Lobster’ Newburg with it. Basically a roux with a milk sauce with a touch of sherry. Delicious over Yorkshire puddings.
Imitation crab meat is manufactured so it can be pulled apart like string cheese, and the texture of a crab salad is greatly enhanced by shredding it. Beating the fully thawed imitation crab meat in your KitchenAid mixer works perfectly. Throw in a handful or two using the flat beater attachment. Use the plastic guard too, as the shredded crab meat will try to exit the bowl.
As someone from the South (the part of the country famous for fried foods of any kind, including seafood) who's fried crab cakes using both real and imitation crab meat, nothing beats the real thing. Imitation crab tastes *similar*, but those who like eating real crab can tell the difference. The texture and taste are different. Plus, imitation crab just has a slight aftertaste to me almost like salmon with sugar. Not saying imitation crab is bad, it can taste great if you're on a budget and know how to season properly... but you just can't beat the real thing.
And the supermarkets out here in South Africa charge a hefty price for this glued together fish yukch! . Another food con, which is why I will not touch this stuff.
anyone who thinks you can buy 2 packs of real crab for 5 bucks deserves a letdown. this imitation stuff has mostly replaced chicken for me and i'm loosing weight. its great for salads or by itself. Even my chickens breathe easier around me because they know 2 things. im not eating the chickens as much there might be bits of imitation crab in the leftovers i feed the chickens. such cute little carnivores.
It's really not that bad for you...a lot of "healthy" snacks are a lot worse than this. Not as good as the real thing, but better for you than a granola bar.
When I lived in Cleveland, imitation crab was pretty good. Now that I am a Seattle resident, not so much. Dungeness crab or Alaskan king crab, holy crap.
I feel like the people who made this video dropped the ball. The reason that imitation crab meat is so popular or at least the reason that people like me are looking into it is because we are allergic to shellfish. Food allergies are one of the few things that you can actually develop after you become an adult like my older brother did. He used to love crab, shrimp and, lobster and ate it for years until he developed an allergy to it.
