Being a stem cell biologist I can say that the definition of intelligence becomes more and more relevant in my field of research. Some years ago, protocols for the generation of so-called "brain organoids" have been developed. We usually make brain organoids from stem cells (which can be made from skin cells) and you can think of them as "petri dish brains" to some degree. Brain organoids form structures similar to the developing brain and they even can cause contraction in muscle cells. However, they are very unstructured and not considered as being conscious (I recently made a video about brain organoids!). In the nearer future, however, lab-grown intelligence might be a thing
Thank you for posting here, as I shall go look at your channel. I already know of organoids but only as a laymen, so it fascinated me to have an expert explain more.
I have a question. With nanomachines hastily taking "control" of lab-grown tissue (for example a few frog skin and muscle cells were put together and "programmed" to be able to move in every direction), what differentiates that from actual biological intelligence?

It is not my intent to boast, but I shall have you know that I do not need narcotics to make ruinous blunders. If you wish to show everyone that my statement contains fallacy, we can settle this with a duel. The rules of the duel are as follows: Preferrably, do not bring machine guns, or other such weaponry from the 20th century. The duel should end by sunset. You are not supposed to shoot when the adversary's back is turned, or when they are unable to respond to your attack. The venue shall be decided after your confirmation. yeah, some of them need to upgrade their basic sensory ability. others need to figure out the social bit. then there's the ones with no planning. together, they form every multiplayer team in existence!
I feel that one thing that was missed was the ability to spontaneously adapt when planning doesn't work. Not just changing plans, but combining complex learned behaviors in order to push the organism toward what was planned.
The funny part is, a lot of times the ability to speak can show that you are unintelligent 😅. Like when you say something stupid, and make it clear that you don't understand what you are talking about 😅. I agree though, it's a great quote 😁👍
Doing 'research' is probably one of the most fun jobs because you can do stupid stuff with the excuse that you're just learning about the outcome, and there's ALWAYS something to research that someone else hasn't, yet.
I'm an undergraduate student in biological sciences and also an illustrator. My dream job is definitely working with these guys from Kurzgesagt. I love the color combination, the brush used to illustrate... It's totally beautiful! Well, one day you'll have a Brazilian illustrator working at your agency (or not, but I would love to)
That's cool and all but gru is the most powerful being in the universe.First according to the height of a Minion (which is 3.5 feet on average) Gru is 4 minions tall, which means he is a godly size of 14 feet tall. Second if any of you remember the original Despicable Me, you Know there is a scene when Vector kidnaps the three girls and shoots a series of heat-seeking misses at Gru, he then dodge them all. According to the speed of an average ballistic missile (1900 mph) and the size of the missile according to his ankle size, Gru can perceive and move at such a speed that the missiles only move 9.5 miles per hour, 0.5% of their original speed. Plus after this Gru punches a shark and it is paralyzed meaning its spine is probably shattered, to remind you it would require a force greater than 3,000 newtons to fracture the spine. That’s equal to the impact created by a 500-pound car crashing into a wall at 30 miles per hour. I rest my case.
@@ItsDrickMC Just "kurzgesagt", no "in" ("kurzgesagt" translated literally: "quickly said") They actually did this exact same joke in the last video on their German channel
2 years ago yet im not sure if i watched this once or twice . Rewatching or watching for the first time , the videos of this channel always feel fresh and best way to learn
Loved that game. I remember getting the deluxe edition in 7th grade and showed my bio teacher the game and the next day in class, she put on the the special edition documentary DVD which showed the game creator Will Wright showing off how CRISPR could make a chick that's born with teeth, scales and no feathers. The cell stage and animals stage were masterpieces. Cell stage and space stage always looked the coolest in the trailers. Wish it lived up to the hype in space stage. But now we have No Mans Sky, but man do I miss 2009.
I laughed so hard when i saw this and i still am now thank you so much this was the most funniest comment ive ever seen i basically laughed for 10 minutes straight XD sorry im over reacting but i dont care
This was a really useful video, keep it up kurz I love watching you’re amazing videos they keep us happy, hope you guys stay motivated as always learn on!
as a psychology major this was a very different way of explaining intelligence from what I was expecting! Intelligence is a very complicated concept indeed but it did not even scratch the surface :c It gave a decent idea of what it is in a larger scope however!
@@g_g... Oops, I didn't reply to the other person... I watched this over a yr ago but I'll do my best to remember my thoughts. This video was a very good answer if an alien came down and asked us what intelligence was. It's also a good history of intelligence but we're not really learning much from it as humans. What a lot of people don't know is that intelligence is a human construct - something we use to convey an idea that's not tangible- and it doesn't really exist. The definition of intelligence has always been a controversy because the human brain is too complicated for us to clearly define yet. For example, IQ used to be a single factor to measure overall intelligence but ppl started noticing that high IQ doesn't mean someone's necessarily "smart," so they came up with EQ and together they respectively measured, more or less, "logical ability" and "emotional quotient." They're still widely used but judging one's intelligence solely based on IQ and EQ would be dismissing countless aspects of it. Every single theory try to categorize every aspect of it (logical, linguistic, spatial, etc.) but that's impossible as these "traits" are more of a spectrum than a single concept. If it were up to me, I think I would've explained that we can never define intelligence until we understand our brain completely which I don't think is possible for a veryyyy long time. And then I would've talked about the prominent existing theories (gardner, g factor, etc.), and end it with some moral message about the misuse of any kind of intelligence tests (to provide some context, IQ testing was one of the major factor for why the holocaust happened).
@@2ndintelligentWorld if the holocaust thing is true then I'm pretty sure it was just used as one of the many excuses for the holocaust at that time. Anyways, this is some very interesting stuff. Thank you for responding
Mr. 8-Bit Doggo regardless of whether it makes sense to you, iq and its parts correlate very well to so many things that it obviously has a measurable effect. You can think whatever you want as to why that is, but it is a useful tool regardless.
Mr. 8-Bit Doggo and iq doesn’t measure personality, probably the best thing we’ve got for that is OCEAN aka the big five, and in the end personality tests tend to be useless or near useless.
And yet he can't figure out for what purpose we should even use it. To chase futile careers, solve artificial academic problems, hoard fleeting treasures, chase dopamine highs or to satisfy the "evolution" process? "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork." Psalm 19:1
I love your animations and your way of explaining things. And also, I'm glad teachers use this channel to teach. If I saw one of these films at my biology lesson I'd definitely become more interested
The concept of intelligence is not defining itself, but the tools shaped by either personal (being able to speak)or collective intelligence (the use of the internet and computers). So it’s intelligence creating things that eventually try to define their creators
schools teach stuff we probably wont need, there is minimal incentive to do well in schools besides getting the end grades. they measure intelligence by testing our ability to learn and adapt to new and more complex things, the problem is, again, no real incentive. its a heavily flawed system. the vast majority of “experts” had an interest outside of school, taught themselves and/or learnt from experience, things schools dont test for.
@@TheAskald Schools will never admit referring to any notion of intelligence ever, in my experience they are the first to regard intelligence as vague, and they probably do it too much. They DO NOT want to recognize intelligence. The closest they will _ever_ go is saying "you have facilities" over and over again.
@@MuhdIzzatFarhan same thing, except my WHOLE HAND burned........a while ago like maybe 2 weeks ago, still did not fully recover from it and still hurts a bit
You guys should totally make posters for ESL classrooms! (I know that has nothing to do with science but the illustration is so wonderful the students would be hooked)
My teacher kinda just throws stuff on your desk. Sometimes she puts something on the smartboard and just leaves it up there without really explaining it
5:26 Raccoon 1: "Okay gonna think real hard I think I should put stones so that the water will rise and... voila! Marshmallow is mine!" Raccoon 2: *"ITS BIG BRAIN TIME"*
The raccoons actually found a bunch of creative way to get the marshmallow. Tipping over the container was probably the worst example from that study; especially since the scientists had fastened the container down so it wasn't trivial to tip over. My favorite was throwing a rock in so it splashed the marshmallow out.
@@georgenelson172 I would argue: it's not even that. It's literally nothing actually. I mean, whatever you come up with to describe that game, we would find that it's way to shallow to actually be called that. "Dancing simulator"? How that, with only about 4 different dance moves. "Creature Designer"? You can barely deviate from the standard vertebrate body plan. And every creature has to be made out of bubbles. "Educational software about evolution"? Well, you see, that's kind of nowhere near how evolution actually works and thus, will rise even more misconceptions. "A space adventure (with an overly long and tedious prelude)"? Hahahaha. No.
@@lonestarr1490 Imagine getting a sequel to spore though, with modern technology. The game was fun but the concept could be expanded on so much further to actually simulate evolution in other creatures and create a whole environment that modeled an actual ecosystem. That would acutally be a really fun and interesting game. Sadly, I don't think we are getting spore 2 anytime soon.
@@apacheattackhelicopter8185 I do not deny it per se, but you must accept too that many people have skills and mindsets that one IQ test can't parse. Sure, one may get a 90 in a IQ test, but is able to compose and sing very good melodies, or is a very good at drawing or simply can cook some delicious food. What the IQ measures is more logic and mathematics and a bit of critical thinking... but many people can't think like that.
Love all the contents of this channel. Social media nowadays are so full of crap, having these meaningful and knowledgeable videos clearly stands out. So admirable!!!!

Many people think they have the toolbox, and they think they're using it, but sadly they're just another useful idiot. We live in the information age and gullibility is on the rise.
@@kunalnature Yes, that is also true when we talk about confident ignorance (that heavily relies on chances that can bring good things or have a huge possibility of commiting mistakes as well). But if it's the kind of stupidity that pertains to lack of control and most especially absent mindedness, that's what causes humanity to commit huge mistakes.
@@Burn_Angel ohh what an interesting story there. I think it isn't stupidity and is rather curiosity. Stupidity is something you would do using only 5% of your brain. Search it up to know more

I think we need a game for this right now. Never been much of a merchandise person, but I would definitely buy a game with this art style. Maybe a game about the earth using stuff from their other videos?
What does IQ even measure? What is it good for? How computer-like our brains are? Thanks, but no thanks. I have an actual computer for that and it is much better than me on such problems.
@@96ace96 Your general intelligence quotient. Computers would fail any iq test as it is specifically designed for humans to measure memory, spatial ability, and pattern finding, which are key traits we use to measure general human intelligence.
Intelligence as thoughts is a tool, it is nothing to venerate or be proud of. Intelligence is matter contrasted with consciousness. The fungus or slime that grows intelligently is proof of the limit of this approach, this can only happen if you realize intelligence is related to consciousness, and consciousness is not matter. Wave particle duality and behaiour of electrons suggest this. the fungus has no memory and awareness and self but it exhibits just that. It also completely ignores the role emotions play in cognition. This has to do with awareness, Awareness of thoughts is something to be proud of, not thoughts. The value system underlying this video is that intelligence serves survival. This video is what Jiddu Krishnamurti means (1981 Amsterdam) when he says philosophers and scientists contribute to the problem. It also simply assumes that competition is something natural and good. Competition is a mistake (David Bohm). Creativity presented as a part of intelligence as well as the utilitarian, functional approach is unfortunate. Where does humor fit in here, compassion, forgiveness, consciousness. I found it disheartening and depressing.
Hey, currently a teacher. There's some great "systems level" poster that cover linchpin topics for earth/space science, physics and chemistry (e.g. rotational motion, periodic table, electron orbitals, forces) but I find that it's generally difficult to get systems level posters in biology (granted, the human body systems one is great). Some posters that would be really awesome to cover would be things like niches/trophic cascades, photosynthesis, mrs Gren, the tree of life, natural and sexual selection. Often I find it difficult to find posters that cover these topics in sufficient detail, with nice artwork that within a reasonable price range.
Intelligence Breakdown Basic Tools: 1. Gather information: 5 ext. and 1 inner sense 2. Save information: memory 3. Learn from information: feedback, reinforcement Advance tools: 4. Library of Knowledge: recall and access, general knowledge 5. Creativity: mental duct tape, new and unusual connections 6. External tools: 7. Planning: what now, and what later 8. Culture: for cooperation, understanding and build great great things 9. Skill sets: trades and talents, like finance or music, arise from division of labor The more tools mastered, the more flexible one can deal with problems arises
This is very good sir. I think Kurzgesagt must provide an 'in a nutshell' review of their videos at the end. They will earn more brownie points with the artwork required for a big picture review.
Only because you went through single player mode first, which set your expectations (and taught you some basics). If you start with co-op mode first, it might be easier, but you won't know it, until you try single player mode and complain it's harder.
Excellent. Being able to bring the big and small together, whatever it is; from a particle to even questions one might ask, is simply difficult to do, one could argue unique in teaching and corporate training. Mic dropped!
And the root of these kinds of social problems is the fact they cause suffering. And since humans are sentient beings, we experience suffering. To resolve this issue, we bombed the world to nothingness. The End
2:29 Learning - "Basically a string of repeatable behaviors that can be varied or adapted." 5:04 Creativity - "Means producing something new and valuable from apparently unrelated things." 5:59 Planning - "Considering the activities for a desired goal, and putting them together..." I reallly like these simplified breakdowns. I helps clarify what the purpose is. Sometimes ppl think they have a 'learning disability' or that they 'aren't creative' or that being organized is difficult. These help break down the understanding of what it is you're really doing. I really enjoyed this video!
This breakdown is indeed very valuable, one could benefit from it tremendously if he could find ways to work on these individual steps rather than trying to improve "inteligence as a whole".
Thank you for the time saving comment I wanted to write down some notes:D , and yes indeed the simple breakdowns are the reason I love in a nutshell I feel smarter every time I watch one of their vids!

So all around even they the producures know this, amazing aweosme channel all around! Mever stop educating the young mind that are inquistive [like myself] and haveba thirst to learn more! [I dont believe in god] but God frickin bless 💙❤
Kurzgesagt animations are very child-friendly in both their visual and narrative style. Things are "dumbed down" just enough. And the style is amazing to look at, no matter the age. Don't know if you have these children yet, but when you do, I encourage showing some of these. Just watch out not to show too much stuff from the "Existential Crisis Playlist" so they can sleep at night :) Space videos though, I loved to get interested in space stuff when I was a child (still do at 29) and if only I had high-quality content like this to watch back at my school days, I'd have studied so much more of the things I'm truly interested in. I think it's important to show children that learning can be fun - and this channel is an excellent example. I am commenting directly to you in particular, because the topic of showing these to my child has been something I thought about as well. Even before I had any knowledge whether I'd even have a child at all, I decided these would be good stuff to show to younglings. Now I have a 1yr old son and even though he and his mother live in Germany away from me most of the time ( I live in Finland), my wish of showing these videos as a teaching tool is still possible, as Kurzgesagt is a German channel originally and they can now watch the German versions there ^^ Also.. I can never write, yet alone pronounce, the name correctly either and just call it "That good channel with ducks, death and Adobe Illustrator style vector graphics" and this generally gets the message across lol. All the best to you, blessings from the North from some random Internet dude :)
@@expred Hello to you Expred! Greetings from London! [American living in London]. I really do appreciate your response to me and I’m actually really happy I was able to generate some sort of mini conversation here! I commented because sometimes after their insightful, informative and thought provoking videos I love to see what other people think and then it dawned on me one day that I would love my children to be knowledgeable on things like this [relative to their age of course] it would be nice to introduce them to philosophical things and to get them asking interesting questions as well as knowing the science -Physics primarily and also as you said the amazingly cute animations! [they’re kid friendly and they don’t look super complicated either!] and that narrators videos is absolutely legendary!. It would be lovely for them to have a basic [even tho I don’t think their videos are basic at all! As you said they’re just dumbed down - they have this talent of explaining even hard concepts so simply!] Speaking on kids I don’t have any children currently - I’m 19. And on that I’ve actually been watching kurzgesart [I really hope I spelt it right!] for a few years now [since 2020 I used to also watch a similar channel called “What IF” for even longer I remember when I was 11 and I wrote an essay on a black hole swallowing a Magnetar - this is a type of neutron star]. Sorry I’ve gone off on one a bit there. Speaking on which I’m actually really happy the fact that they have videos in German which is their original language that you can show to your son! That’ll not only teach him new things [and honestly set him a bit ahead of his peers] but it’ll definitely help him with learning how to speak [however he might be a bit well spoken for such a young boy if he ends up liking their videos😊] Speaking on a long distance relationship me and my partner were long distance for a few months [Hes a Serbian that grew up in Italy and decided to move to London for a few years were I meant him then he left for a few months and then came back]. I might show him some of kurszgesagt videos! [again I hope I’ve spelt that right!, I probably haven’t] Anywho! Blessing to you and your family in Germany Expred! Good day!.😊✨🌸
@@x.astar.x Haha, unfortunately I have to inform your spelling of Kurzgesagt is still a bit off, that's alright. (I still have to double-check it every time lol. And my own spelling of even English is constantly off, I'm afraid). My ex (the German mother of my son) told me that the channel name is German and literally means "In a nutshell". The more you know! Your essay about a black hole gulping down a magnetar sounds pretty cool. I also think getting children interested in science and philosophy/psychology early on is important (I think the latter two go kind of hand in hand, though I recognize the differences). I always loved big questions, as a kid and still do. "Why are we conscious?" "What is beyond space?" "Has everything always been?" Stuff like this. I was endlessly curious and channels such as this definitely help me keep that sparkle of curiosity alive! Most importantly I think, the more you wonder about psychology and philosophy, the more you also tend to think about ethics, morality, and empathy. These are traits I would love my son to have; understanding the human mind well enough to understand other's suffering and happiness as well. Though being very empathetic can be a curse as well as a blessing, I still think it's one of the most important things in life. (Empathy towards others). I watch plenty of space channels but can't really think of other channels with such nice child-friendly visuals to go with these topics, and also Kurzgesagt channel(s, they have many in different languages) cover a wide range of other topics. I would suggest, (to you, not exactly to children though) channels called PBS Space Time, along with SEA and Cool Worlds. Just a few from the top of my head, since I thought you might find them interesting. All of these are science channels, with emphasis on space stuff. Have a nice day as well :)
What if u put food back into the slime molds old already traveled path ? Will they return for it or not ... Because this sounds like they just leave a chemical trail saying "no food no food no food" which is not technically intelligent, it is just chemical messaging like how cells communicate.
