What Is It Like Being "Fat" in Japan? (Healthiest Country in the World)

Meet Pocha-Home, a comedian group who makes a living out of being overweight in Japan. I got to talk to them about their experience living in Japan as quote-on-quote "fat" people, as Japan has one of the healthiest populations in the world. America’s obesity rate is about 40% whereas Japan’s obesity rate is 3.5%. In this video, I chose to compare these two countries because I grew up half of my life in the US, and spent the other half here in Japan.

You feel uncomfortable and worry if you are standing out from everyone…Many Japanese guys like a girl like you. I’m very tall and grotesquely skinny. When I wear fashionable clothes, I look confident. Hundreds of Japanese guys have approached me to say 〝I know you think you look like a model and beautiful and guys like you. We don’t. Guys don’t like a rail〟. When I’m staring at them, they look happy and say 〝You lost confidence😁?〟. When I say 〝 I do know my body is super ugly and so what? Why do I have to look pretty? Why do I have to get fat for a guy who pays attention only to something on a woman’s chest but never do to anything inside of her chest?〟, they get mad. Japanese guys like an unconfident girl who always worries if she looks pretty for them.

With this kind of Japanese bullying you should show them that you're confident. If youre bold, you could even come up to them and ask daijubodesuka. These bullies would usually get embarassed and scamper off like roaches exposed to light. Being passive and timid only empowers these bullies so use that gaijin shield and show them that being fat doesnt mean being a pushover nor a clown.

Its insane if 40kg (88Ibs) for a 160cm (5’2) woman is actually the beauty “standard” in Japan. That’s a critically underweight BMI! She also mentioned being seen as obese for weighing 55kg (121 Ibs) at 160cm (5’2), that’s a normal BMI (on the slimmer side). Women in Japan must either be starving constantly or society calls them fat, my heart goes out to them.

As a girl who is Japanese and American (i live in Japan and visit Japan every summer for school) I am a very normal weight in America, and in no way am I overweight at all. But in Japan, I get called a pig, big and fat, because I have some muscle and I am i little bigger than some girls. But not everyone is clueless. My friend in a year above me let me talk to him about my problems and here's what he had to say. That ]my body is very healthy and problably better and healthier than a lot of girls in Japan and that there is nothing wrong with it. And that people (not all) in Japan tend to try too hard to be skinny, and end up having unhealthy bodies, no matter how pretty and skinny they may look, which is actually common among Asian countries. K-pop and J-pop industries are clear examples of this. And he also said that pigs barley actually have body fat (16%, making adults fatter than normal pigs) so I should almost take it as a compliment, he's so nice and I'm very grateful for him.

She's illuminati, please be careful of her. Remarriage is while your first spouse is still alive is adultery and one must repent from it. Either remain single or reconcile. Be careful not to use God's Name in vain, Holy ****, Jesus Christ, jeez/sheesh, OMG, oml are also blasphemous uses of God's Name! Exodus 20:7 forbids it. Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️! Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Racism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget! So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen. ☺

The girls were in good spirits but that’s bc they’ve had to make a living out of making fun of themselves. The fact that grown women weighing 88 lbs is deemed the beauty standard is incredibly sexist and sad. It’s not just Asia that withholds such sexist beauty standards but it’s seen all over the world. Don't worry at all. There is no social stigma against foreigners living in Japan. Frankly, there is peer pressure among Japanese, but it's not directed to foreigners living in Japan. Additionally, there is Amazon and Rakuten. You can literally buy anything from imported clothing/size to cheese. (You can also buy from US Amazon and have it shipped to Japan. You just to need to pay a little extra for shipping.) And there are special stores for "big sizes" too. But for items that you need to try on to be certain, like jeans or undergarments or swimwear, I'd recommend buying it in your home country and bringing it with you. The clothing size/scale is vastly different in North America, Europe, and Asia...as well as depending on brand line-up, so we all get confused when buying on-line. I'm pretty sure you'll naturally lose weight if/when you move to Japan. It's the everyday food, portion, humidity, lifestyle, etc.

These three seem like a great bunch, and they are funny AF. On another note, just a little over a year I was 122 KG, so I was heavier than any of them, and today I am 82 KG so lighter then the lowest one. But I still have a belly, and I still have a desire to lose more weight. But I'm not sure if I will be able to. And I was never teased for being fat IRL when I was 122KG, but since I was streaming on twitch I was constantly flamed for being fat online. Ppl do be like that when they have the safety of the internet in between them and you.

"…at night, they sleep with plus sized women like us." Yup, I'm gay and I'm a biiiig boy. Men want me up and down no matter where I go, but they don't want to DATE me because they're afraid of the stigma. It's wild.

I love them! Their personalities are something that I need in my life. They just radiate happy, positive energy and they're funny asf on top of that. I can't imagine it's easy at all being a plus size person in Japan, especially being a plus size woman in Japan. I feel for them, being a plus size woman myself who has been on a weight loss journey, they give me that boost of happiness and confidence that I need. I hope one day they will decide to become healthy. It's not easy at all, but we need them around for a long time! I hope to see them again on the channel! 🤍

I’m a big fan of Pocha home and I don’t understand why you did make them eat hamburger, simply I want to know the reason. That doesn't seem anything related to the content and it seems that they just want to give a stereotypical image.

I love these women, but damn, this guy was really disrespectful. They were treated like a circus side show, along with any viewer who might be overweight. And those arguing that it's their job, that's again like saying that their feelings and dignity are irrelevant because a few bucks are thrown their way. And his comment about if she could do a push up she could go on a date with him? Yuck!

When I was in Japan I had to buy clothing as a plus size lady, so I went to Punyus. I also stopped a random large girl on the street to ask where she bought her clothing and luckily she spoke enough English to help me find a website too.

That thumbnail is CRIMINAL 😂
@chiaraippoliti
@chiaraippoliti Год назад
Referring to the thumbnail: I just wish we could stop perpetuating the stereotype that ALL fat people get fat from overeating. Some fat people gain weight because of medical issues, medicine, genetics, and other factors, which explians why there are many skinny people who can overeat and NOT gain weight. Being fat or skinny doesn't automatically determine how healthy you eat or how much you exercise. I wish more people could understand that. It's frustrating and heart wrenching remaining obese even though you go to the gym and eat protein and veggies almost every day while witnessing your skinny friends and relatives eat considerably more than you do.

These girls are so sweet but I think parts of this video such as the eating contest were cruel. Laughing at them when they answered questions was out of line. You should be promoting that they are as valuable as anyone else, their size does not detract from their worth. You were tone deaf in certain aspects.
