What Is It Like Growing Up in Indonesia? | Michelle

EDIT: To clarify on Michelle's discussion of islands... Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, & West Papua are major islands in Indonesia. Sulawesi should have been mentioned but was not. Bali was referenced as while it is not a large island, internationally it is a very well known Indonesian island with a lot of cultural significance. To many people outside of Indonesia, Bali is one of the most well-known Indonesian islands.
Chris interviews Michelle, who speaks about her life in Jakarta, Indonesia, moving to the U.S., and major cultural differences she notices between Americans and Indonesians.

Correction: 5 major islands: 1. Kalimantan (aka Borneo, unlike Malaysians, Indonesians rarely use the term), 2. Sumatra, 3. Papua (Western New Guinea, obsolete: Irian), 4. Sulawesi, 5. Java. There are minor islands: 1. Maluku Islands (Moluccas) and 2. Southeast/Nusa Tenggara Islands (obsolete: Lesser Sunda Islands). Bali and Lombok are included in the Southeast islands. Thank you Michelle for introducing Indonesia ❤

She's pretty good despite the harsh criticism. Remember, she started with a HUGE caveat: Indonesia is so diverse... You can spend a lifetime reading books about Indonesia and travel the country, still you'll fall short of describing it well to a professor even more so to a layman. And you gotta love her passionate yet laidback attitude. You go girl! Edit: after watching more, she's actually really2 good and educated outside of the hard fact (you can just google this).

@@Orbital-MediaI'm sorry but there are many parts about Indonesian political history that are said to be wrong or misinformed. Especially during the Sukarno era or the old order. Because after 4 years of brutal war with the Dutch, Indonesia entered a period of chaos in 50. Because this period is very difficult to explain because there was a period of federation and 8 rebellions Different in 10 years and 10 different Prime Ministers in 9 years. And ended with guided democracy for 5 years. Banning Islamic parties. Communist uprising and 1 million communists killed. And Two coups by the CIA. And so began the military dictatorship by Suharto in the mid-60s to the late 90s.

55:20 all parties in Indonesia have same ideology it is Pancasila centralists. So there are no different ideologies from each other. This is because in the past after independence there were many rebellions and murders just because of ideological differences. So during the New Order era and the military dictatorship came to power . All political parties must adhere to the 5 values of Pancasila. 1.Belief in the one and only God 2.Just and civilized humanity 3.The unity of Indonesia) 4 Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations among representatives 5.Social justice for all the people of Indonesia Any party that does not have these 5 values or has opposing values must be disbanded. So don't be surprised if Indonesia chooses party figures (strong men) rather than the party itself.

honestly major props to michelle, although from living in the US for a while she has missed some recent political nuances. but honestly yeah in a nutshell the way she describes indonesia as a neutral state is spot on, we've always been a non-axis nation. also to add to corruption, similar to how family run businesses tend to become a thing here. Nepotism in politics as well many other facets are very prevalent. you can see this clear as day by seeing our current president and who the next VP is lineage and family also carries a lot of weight in the society although slightly different betweem ethnic groups. say certain groups give emphasis to names of family, in other cases other ethnic groups might put more weight on what the family profesion is, or if anyone from your family tree is of importance, so on so forth. this might be one of the reasons nepotism is prevalent well in any case indonesia is a very complex nation, young in the global eyes but rich with history spanning centuries. even living here your whole life might not give you the full story. we have a stereotype of being "overproud" and well you can probably tell from other comments that that's true. she did a great job describing her experience living here and i hope the comments don't discourage michelle from sharing more about her home country

my 2cent Kalimantan Kalimantan Borneo is a Muslim-majority island, but there are significant Christians, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, Confucians like other parts of Indonesia. The native ethnicities are Banjar, Dayak, Kutai, Paser. However, currently the population of Kalimantan consists of Banjar, Dayak, Javanese, Malay, Buginese, Madurese, Chinese, Kutai, Sundanese, Batak, and others. Coffee Origin Since Indonesia used to consist of various sultanates in the 15th-20th centuries, it is not surprising that coffee was brought by traders from Arabia and Ottomans. The coffee is usually drunk by Muslims so that they can perform the night prayer. Curry AFAIK, Turmeric and other spices that are native to Indonesia have been used for cooking or drinking as "Jamu". Indonesia has been known as a producer of spices since time immemorial. So traders come to Indonesia to look for spices. I just heard a new theory that curry was brought by Indians to Indonesia. What Chris means maybe Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). NAM is a forum that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It was founded with the view to advancing interests of developing countries in the context of Cold War confrontation. On Sharia law in Aceh, what is surprising is that Acehnese prefer sharia law to secular, because in sharia law, after receiving punishment they can be immediately free while in secular law, they will be punished by imprisonment. So they prefer sharia law because they can immediately enjoy freedom.

Aceh already has its own strong sultanate, wealth and military with the close relationship to the ottoman empire. and when indonesia gain its independency, Aceh sacriface for the sake of unity, rather than become independent, Aceh willingly join to unite and become one as indonesia, that's why Aceh is one of the specials region in indonesia that has its own rule of law in the region. If you guys want to know more, but you also dont have to, please just listen and digest what she said, not correcting what is wrong on her words. For such a young person, she knows so much about history, politics, about what happens in the 1960s (hint - indonesia, cia) about china usa and how is that similar with what happens in chile, argentina, etc, you guys need to listen to that, but again - you dont have to and keep being like katak dalam tempurung.

The most known ethnic would be Javanese and Sundanese which originated from Java island, Madura from Madura island, Minang and Batak from Sumatra, Dayak from Borneo, Menado, Gorontalo, etc from Celebes, Ambonese from Molluca, and of couse Papuan from Papua. The culture of drinking coffee at night derived from revolutionary era, where the youngsters gather and talking about politics (back in the Dutch East Indies era). But generally, we drink coffee in both morning and evening. While drinking tea usually at noon. I think some of the reason where we think running a business is more prestigious even if resulting less income is that because of our tradition of helping each other (gotong royong). Because by running business, we open an opportunities for other to work for you, hence, opening new job vacancies. The term that employee is family in small business also related to that tradition. Initially, the Dutch (started with VOC) only want to occupy Banten (the western tip of Java) as their base port and Molluca as the spice producers. But then they realize that to keep their fleet save through out the sail from Molluca to Banten and to India, they need to occupy any area adjacent to their sailing route. So they started to occupy Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Nusa Tenggara, Celebes, and Papua. This is why they left the north of Borneo to British since they don't need the whole Borneo. This is also the reason they didn't occupy Malaka which was occupied by British, because the Dutch sails from Banten through the western part of Sumatra. Not though Malaka strait. About sharia law in Aceh, it's quite interesting. There are two laws applicable there. If moslem held accountable according to sharia law, they punished by sharia law, otherwise, they punished by national law. But if the accountable were not a moslem, they can chose whether they punished by sharia law or national law. CMIIW though. Since I could be wrong. About why the Javanese are all over the place, it's because they are mostly yes man people. Not really a hard worker thing, but at least they willing to do any job. And about the federal states, she is right. We are not as federal as the US but also not as centralized as China.

Alasan 1.

Toughest rival is Thai food - If you have trouble on the street, like accidentally bump into someone, people will be braver to argue with you because you're a "Cina" (again, racism is still there) - Police officers will likely ask more money out of you if you violate traffic rules (refer to point number 2) - If you happen to own a business, you'll be the first one to be targeted by local punks (again, refer to number 2)
