My PET scan went well. It was really not the big of a deal to go through. Waiting for results is the tough part, I was lucky I got the results the next day....all is well :). Best wishes to all.

My mom just did this today. Checked in. Called us in and explained. Radioactive glucose. Mom has diabetes but since glucose is stored energy it's less active in the morning when people first wake up. Found a vein in her arm and injected her with it. She then rested or napped for 45 minutes. Then she went through the scanner for like 20 minutes. She said she felt 100% fine before and after. My mom is 64. Juat letting everyone know because I know its scary to go through all of this with the ones we love. Stay strong everyone and wishing you a very happy new 2019!

A radioactive tracer made from a radiologist or a researcher or nuclear medicine doctor is injected into your body. Depending on what the doctor wants to diagnose there are different radioactive tracers. Most commonly used is fluorodeoxyglycose F18. So after the injection the patient rests for an hour ( it’s different depending on what radioactive tracer was previously injected) and then, everything is ready to go to the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner. The doctor will tell you to relax as you won’t feel anything and nothing touches you, and he’ll go inside the room.There, while waiting inside the scanner for like 20-45 minutes depending on the quality of the PET scanner, the system detects pairs of gamma rays emitted indirectly into your body, and that’s the radioactive tracer I mentioned at the beginning. So each gamma ray after the collision of Positron with the Electron( this is what happens on that specific area the doctor wants to examine, it’s where the radioactive tracer goes) travels with the same energy towards opposite directions until they arrive to the detectors, forming a coincidental point that will be used to reconstruct the image of the object. PET scanner is a painless and precise highly detailed-highly contrast, 3D projection scanner. However if I had to mention a few “cons”: exposure to radiation, iodine one can cause allergic reactions ( all these because of CT Computed Topography).

I'm a radiographer and here in Germany we do the tracer kits, place the needles, do the application and the examination. The doctor only does the medical education and the report.

This thing is harmless and helpful but it's the scariest thing for me! I am claustrophobic and I hate it everytime! And the thing that they put inside you sometimes make you feel like you've peed yourself and I am always so afraid what will happened if that actually become true.. If you are claustrophobic please inform your doctors and take a pill and/or ask them if someone can acompany you in the room. That definitely helps.

Had mine done the other day, it was a lot easier than id imagined. the machine isnt that long so you're not all the way in at once. the only thing id say is it would of been nice if they had a radio on in the room, just to hear some music instead of the fans running. but please dont panic from having it done. the staff at Castle Hill were amazing.

I work with this system at Munich University Hospital... I miss the contrast agent injector, cause the CT has to be done with contrast, followed by the PET.

Must be some type of Devine intervention? I have been keeping up on this type of CT’ just finished mine at the VA today’ due to PSA going from 16 to 30 within a year’ after 1st biopsy lost! Currently in a lot of pain in the 🦴 bones! Lower back’ right hip locking up’ both knees consistent pain’ very little sleep due to pain all night in hip and knees! Not to wait for results! VA style’

Elderly people with weak kidneys beware of using the contrast tracer for it may be fatal. I personally know about 2 fatalities due to that.

A important thing to note is the radioactive injection only has a 45 Minuit life! If you don't turne up in time you have missed your slot and they will not have another dose !!! So be there on time. The porters didnot ture up for my mum today because of a missunderstanding made by a nurse who did not speak English very well and did not understand how imprtant it was :( we now have to wate another week to get another opointment.

The physical half-life of 18F is 110 minutes. We applicate the tracer, than the patient has to wait 45 minutes to cumulate the activity in the hot spots then the examination starts. 10 min more or less is no problem. With 68Ga-PSMA for prostate tumors we wait 60 minutes.

I would like to know how not one pet scan but 2 came back that the cancer had not spread my sister in-law had stage 3 stomach cancer she had chemo treatment for three months and then yesterday she was having what ever was left of the tumor removed and they said part of her stomach or maybe all of it might removed they were not sure till they went in REMEMBER BOTH PET SCANES CAME BACK THAT THERE WAS NO CANCER ANYWHERE ELSE TO NO SURGERY AND THE CANCER HAS SPREAD INTO HER UPPER AND LOWER ENTESTINE HER LIMPH NODES THEY ALSO FOUND OUT THE THE TUMOR IN HER STOMACH IS ATTACHED TO THE MAIN ARTERY SO WE HAD TO TELL HER TODAY FEB.14 2015 THAT SHE IS DIEING HOW DDID THIS GET MISSED HOW PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME

Pet scan resolution can only go down to 8 millimeters. Does not see microscopic cancer cells. Wife’s pet came out clean but later found after sentinel lymph node biopsy that there were microscopic amounts in one of the nodes. They should tell you that about the resolution

Because you're being injected with a small amount of radioactive material that can affect an infant (also pregnant women) until it's left your system, so you're not supposed to come in contact with those individuals right after the procedure.

I had this scan done.. I was perfectly healthy before.. this nearly killed me. I felt the life being sucked out my body when I had this done i could not move or yell when it was going on.. I am still having heart problems till this day because of this. DO NOT GET THIS DONE!

Franco Vasquez I had it done in Maryland to check for internal bleeding. It was the worst mistake of my life! After getting this done.. I was in a near coma .. they had me in the hospital for an additional 2 days.. They had claimed it was an easy out patient procedure, that was not the case. I was so weak I couldn't walk and I lay in bed in and out of consciousness. After I managed to snap out of it I kept insisting they stop injections immediately. They claimed it was saline solution,.. but then they would add a different injection when I wasn't looking. After I stayed awake and wanted to go home I managed to convince the doctor I was ok. I wasn't, I just needed to get away from there! I went home and felt a tremendous burning all over my body body! I felt so bad, apparently they had lowered the temperature in the room so I couldn't feel this sensation when I was at the hospital! This was a result of the radioactive dye. I went back again the next day and they gave me the run-around saying that I had a harmless procedure done and that the effects would go away over time. I had also signed a waiver in a hurry since I was worried originally about the internal bleeding. Turns out I wasn't! The biggest and craziest side effect I have *Till this day* is I can't smell anything! I can't even smell bleach . . I tried it. I held it up to my nose and couldn't smell anything.. I could only feel the burning sensation after about 30 seconds.

Nname Withheld I wanted to give this a thumbs-up but I want to make sure that everybody understands what I mean that yeah you get hit with 200 x amount of radiation from a normal X-ray and yeah when you're done you feel like s*** I felt like that for two days and I have not felt the same since I had it done I would not have done this if I knew all this I figured it was safe they give you no paperwork on the dangers whatsoever before this procedure

This woman is full of shit.. she has some other illness.. there is no way a PET or gallium scan can do such a thing sorry
