I really do have fun with these. So, here is what I found out about #1. The Davis Boring Tool Co. made what they called an expansion boring head. It was a Victorian era tool for finishing bores on steel or iron wheels. I was unsuccessful at attaching a link to a photo. The head had a pilot, two rows of cutters with graduated adjustment, and a chamfering blade. It looks like the calipers could be set to a shaft or pin, then adjusted to provide the desired fit, and finally used to set the cutters on the head. Six second to finish a bore was the claim.

#2 Is a Pipefitter's Hi-Lo gauge. 100% sure. Ask me how I know! GAL was the original manufacturer but there are now knockoff brands available. The tool has multiple purposes. Angle check for an ASME standard 37.5 degree pipe bevel (each side) Root mismatch gauge Wall thickness gauge Hi Lo gauge for base metal surface.

Pausing the video to make my SWAG: #1, inspection calipers... set/lock the Vernier scale at Ø and then set/lock the calipers at your nominal measurement. Unlock the Vernier and make your measurement, you'll be able to see your variance from nominal on the Vernier scale. (?)

No 1 is a crank pin / journal caliper for railway use. The moving jaw is set to 0 and the jaws are then opened and set on a gauge block to the nominal size, and clamped at the pivot. Then the pin or journal actual size up or down from nominal is measured at the graduated scale, in thousandths of an inch. No 3 is a piston ring gap grinder. No 2 may be a welding gauge but not sure.

No. 2 is a internal and external mis-match gauge for checking the ASME TOLERANCES on rolled steel pressure plates after fitting and tack welding them but prior to completed welding of the circumference of said vessels. Works well both on the outside or inside . The flat end is stood on the fitted joints then read from scale. The thin rou ded e d is designed to insert through the joint gap and can check both gap and mis-match for tolerance. Ed.

#3 looks to be a piston ring gapping tool. In my work, repairing industrial machinery, we would often buy piston rings from a ring manufacturer that were full "full cut". If you were installing the ring in a cylinder that was a little oversized, a standard size ring would have too much gap at the ends. You could trim a full cut ring to fit the bore and end up with a gap that was within spec. I haven't a clue what the other two are but they look very interesting.

This was a really good one, I don't have an earthly idea what any of them are for. For no. 1, rollers usually mean something is moving or you're running down a surface. I think you're in trouble if you need #2. No. 3 could sharpen a hole saw, but why is there only one set of radius marks?

#1 Fine adjust option so a tool can be precisely adjusted. bore is 0.008 under, ajust the caliper by tht and match the tool to it. 2: weld setup gauge. More measuring offset and gap when lining pipe, mostly, but also plate. Both ends work, one weld, one back side through the gap. Very very useful. 3: for sharpening gasket punches?

#2 is a mismatch gauge for welding, mostly used in pipe welding. The rounded end is inserted through the root gap and turned 90 degrees roll to measure internal mismatch. The base is just set on the outside of the joint, straddling the weld area. Most of them have a relief in the middle so it can be used for post-weld inspection (externally only for obvious reasons) too but yours appears to only be for pre-weld inspection as there would be no way to use it post-weld with interfering with the weld bead.

Boy, some interesting items! #1 seems to be something used to measure a work piece in the lathe while it is still revolving. I suppose it would be compared to a master of known size. Number 2 is really intriguing; I've never seen anything like it either. Number 3 is for filing the end gap on piston rings (but you knew that), however, you said there is an abrasive disc but I think those always used a hardened steel disc with fine serrations on the flats. I think the original disc has been replaced with the abrasive. What do you think? Thanks for some really interesting items!

@haroldsprenkle4173
@haroldsprenkle4173 4 месяца назад
@@foxyfoxy2916 Depending on durometer of rubber it is hard to measure across points, that is why we used pi tape, had a dial indicator with a ball bearing for checking runout. Hey this is 17 year memory here, 5 ft wide rolls, .005 tir, .005 diameter. Diameter could be tapered from one end to the other, not big on ends and smaller in middle. Gee I am getting old and can't remember names, but I have always had that problem. Calendar? Roll. Ran against glue rolls, hardened and ground steel. We set rubber rolls to it. Used a sheet of paper to adjust, light pull, it was a practiced feel. Like I said, that was 18 years ago when I was the lamination department mechanic, before that I worked in the tooling department, we fixed laminator rolls. Rubber rolls, hard to measure rubber, we used pi tape pulled tight. Calipers with rollers? Pi tape might be better?
