The final short story of Joyce's 1914 collection Dubliners, "The Dead" is a sobering depiction of Ireland and Irish culture. This essay tries to characterize these relationships through the lens of memory. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

It’s about memory, and through memory, about losing one’s self awareness and self deception, and learning that love is not all about you. One of the greatest short stories ever written.

It’s about our inability to let go of the past.

Maybe it's early to say since I finished only recently, but might as well be my favorite short story too.~

"Snow was general all over Ireland...falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling like the descent of their last end upon all the living and the dead" It is about the temporality of life and that we are all connected in the continuum of time and space...even the horse who ends up in the glue factory...We are the dead

You’ve added so much depth to such a “simple” story. Thank you!

I think you could have placed more emphasis the role of music in the story - music, of course, being a very powerful carrier of memory, and which meant a great deal to Joyce. He is very specific as the actual music being performed and discussed, whether it be grand opera or Irish folksongs. And wonderful to see the much-missed Donal McCann as Gabriel.
