WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN UKRAINE? | Chernivtsi, Ukraine

Going to major cities in Ukraine doesn't always give you the full picture of how life is for the average person and what lies beneath the surface. I decided to go to a mid range city in Western Ukraine called Chernivtsi to get a more inside look and chat with the locals about their opinion on things. I was born in Ukraine myself, but moved to Canada at the age of 5 and would only go for a weeks to visit every couple of years. Even though I think I have more insight than most people about what life is like there, I still have a lot to learn and a lot of the country left to explore.
I hope you guys will find this video interesting and please let me know if you would like to see more of this style of content from me.

Hi Alina, interesting video, thanks. I've been to Chernivtsi a couple of times. I think for the uninitiated, a little bit of historical background would have helped. Essentially, the city (Czernowitz) was built from scratch by the Austrians from the late 18th century and was an outpost of German (to a large extent German Jewish) culture up to the end of the first world war, with the easternmost German-speaking university in the country. No single ethnic group dominated, and everyone somehow had to get along, so it was in many ways a microcosm of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Although many of the ethnic groups have disappeared or dwindled since then, so the city is now predominantly Ukrainian, it still has some of that central European atmosphere - and of course the old architecture is a permanent reminder of those times. So I don't know how typical it is of cities in western Ukraine - it's certainly feels different from places further east.

I own a home near Sophia that I remodeled in the early 90's and rented out. My tenants have never changed and we have a family relationship. They are wonderful people and when I visit I have a small guest house to stay in there. Someday I may move their perminately but for now I remain in the Rocky mountains. I am retired now with a pension that would provide a very comfortable there but I have no bills here other than a cellphone. @@yeahno6053 the language is built on the crylic alphabet which consists of 33 characters. If you focus on learning the alphabet first you will find learning the language incredibly easy. While the Ukrainian language is similar to Russian they are distinctly different. That said Ukraine was a Russian state a long time so by learning Russian first you will find communication in all the former Russian states very good. Grammar is challenging but you'll catch on simply by thinking backwards and sideways. I know that sounds silly but you'll understand later. There is a very charming young lady with a RU-vid teaching Russian but I'm drawing a blank on her channel name, Russian Club or something along those lines. Use voice chat and watch Russian and Ukrainian movies, videos and online news and you'll be surprised how easily the language comes. If you find yourself in northern New Mexico I can meet you in Taos and we'll go to a local coffee shop and drive the liberals nuts speaking Russian.

I think Ukrainians are wonderful people and like most colder climates the outside of buildings get really battered during the cold and wet months. But, as you said inside of the Ukrainian homes are wonderful and in my opinion as warm and hospitable as their hearts. I think if Ukraine can address the corruption a large part of issues will go away. Somehow the rule of law must stand up to the oligarchs whose selfish acts have devastating effect on the lives of millions.

I like that you ventured out into the rural areas and smaller cities. When I traveled in the military, I always ventured out away from the tourist areas, so that I could try to experience the true culture of a place. I enjoyed your video, especially the parts that you narrated. If you could add more narration and less script to read, that would make it even better. Having to read is a distraction from the video content. Of course I understand that it is necessary at times due to the language barrier of your viewers (myself included) when you are interviewing the citizens. Also if you could give a little short biographical description of the people just prior to interviewing them, that would lend more depth to the content. I really liked the background music in this video as well. It put me in a thoughtful, nostalgic mood, and very relaxed. I began remembering the various places that I have visited in the past. I have never been to Ukraine, however, and am very curious about it, especially now that there is so much going on there presently with the Russian invasion and all that goes with it. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people, and I pray for them daily.

So far I have only visited Ukraine twice in 2008 and it is really beautiful in spring and summer. I was in Kiev and Poltava and some villages and monasteries nearby and a garden park west of Kiev. They really put a lot of effort into flowers and gardens. In Kiev I went in taxis and in Poltava I had a rental car and taxis to get around. I don't know much Russian or Ukrainian, but luckily I was visiting friends from there. I have always wanted to return and visit more places especially in the western part of the country and Odessa. Thanks for the video, I will have to watch more on your channel

I once briefly dated a guy from Kyiv and got to visit Lviv and Kyiv for a few days and got a quick slice of what life is like in the cities of Ukraine. I really loved it, the culture, how earnest the people are. But I could also sense a lot of pain and difficulty - kind of like they knew they were being held back from their potential. My hope was that the country is able to keep its rich culture and recognize the treasures that it does have. It truly is unique!
