This river-friendly livestock farming strategy is growing in popularity in Tennessee: if you’re a conscious consumer looking for more ethical ways to eat meat, managed (or rotational) grazing is a term to keep tabs on! 🐮
Managed grazing involves moving livestock through a series of small paddocks instead of letting them browse freely on your property. By allowing grass and shrubs to grow back on sections of land that aren’t in use, farmers can increase plant cover, decreasing erosion and improving soil health. It may seem like a small adjustment, but it makes a huge difference in the amount of runoff entering streams and rivers.
The Cumberland River Compact is giving Middle Tennessee farmers the resources to practice managed grazing - and thus, to protect the sensitive ecosystems on their land - by hosting a brand new workshop series this year: the River Friendly Farms Grazing School! The first workshop is May 10th - stay tuned this spring to hear how it goes and learn how you can support participating farmers.
