What is Maocha?

Whenever we go tea sourcing we are often selecting tea from Maocha. This is unfinished tea which has the majority of the attributes and hallmarks of the farmer's hard work but is lacking that extra refinement that comes from the sorting and roasting.
We have to select from Maocha as this is the stage when most high end wholesalers will grab the truly top drawer tea at a better price and then finish to their own specific requirements. If we wait until the tea is finished then chances are that the batch will all be sold to the domestic market and we will have missed out on the prime pickings of the year. We can't allow that can we?
So we taste Maocha and then we finish according to our specifications. But the taste of Maocha is never as good as the finished article.
Depending on the type of tea, Maocha (or Aracha in Japan) varies in how close it is to finished tea. For Sheng PuErh, Maocha can mean totally finished loose tea which has not been made into cakes and is therefore pretty much complete (the cake making process does alter the taste slightly). For Greens and unroasted tea, Maocha is unsorted tea so it simply requires removing unwanted stems and large leaves. However, for roasted Oolongs the difference between Maocha and the finished tea is a big one.
Watch as we show you and taste the differences.

Thanks Don. Very informative. The thing I love about tea is there are so many varieties, styles and stages of tea. My family and I drink a lot of tea and love trying every available option. That being said, my wife and I are always looking for your videos to pop up sometime Saturday and watch them together. We really like how long they are. Very fun to watch and I learn a lot every time I have also been waiting for your new teas to start showing up as well. It's always a pleasure. Always something special you manage to find. Keep up the good work, It's enjoyed by many.

Yes I know that you are voracious tea drinkers. Fresh teas are going to be arriving thick and fast, we have taken a little longer this year because of the delayed harvests but we have some really special ones coming!

Hi, I don't normally comment on videos, but wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos. Your passion and enthusiasm is infectious. I began my tea journey today when a package from Mai Leaf was delivered, a delicious Amber Gaba. No more tea bags for me 😀

We are going to be launching 2017 teas over the next few weeks with A LOT of exciting teas coming. The harvest across much of the East was late this year due to the weather and a lot of the early spring tea was far too weak tasting in our opinion so we have taken our time to find really great stuff. Sorry for the wait but I am sure that you will enjoy the tea.

I had the pleasure of visiting a tea farm in Japan a couple weeks ago and they said aracha is "unblended tea" - that it is considered unfinished because it hasn't been blended with leafs from other farms to get a consistent flavor profile. So according to them (Obubu tea farm) they sell aracha, because they sell single origin teas that are not blended and reflect the specific farms character that year.
@MeiLeaf
@MeiLeaf 7 лет назад
That's not our experience of the definition of Aracha. True, aracha is usually blended from different farms to create the house blends but usually aracha requires sorting to be finished sencha, gyokuro, kabusecha and so on.
@Malthan
@Malthan 7 лет назад
Yeah I always heard aracha called "farmers tea" and this definition of "unblended tea" was something new to me.

Mei Leaf Don I have enjoyed some bottled kombucha for quite sometime but it will be interesting if maybe you would consider doing a video on how you make it yourself as I really do enjoy it! These tea cups you were using reminded me of Delft Blue (Delftware) style cups. But, as I found out, no wonder it looked similar, the Dutch stole the style from China in the 14th century, haha.

Another great video. Thank you very much. Will you consider doing some masterclasses on different types of tea for people to taste e.g. different types of oolong, raw pu-er, etc? Hopefully on lazy Sunday afternoons.👍

Mei Leaf You know me too well... What about raw pu'er? We can talk about providing a wide choice of tasting samples to the listeners attending the workshop and short notes on the different teas. I know it is a bit of work but I am happy to help. Please contact me privately via Instagram or Facebook if it sounds useful to your business.👍😎😀

Samantha Vegan I live in the US and yes they will ship! You can even with the new website set your Currensy of choice to the American dollars so you don't have to pay the difference between a dollar and the pound. I usually receive it definitely within a week and sometimes within two days after placing an order. Shipping however from London is a bit pricey just so you're aware but it will calculate it for you at your check out. Hope that helps

kinghazzah wow. Thanks so much.
@kinghazzah
@kinghazzah 7 лет назад
You're welcome. So far, all the items from Don at Mei Leaf have been very good quality and we have many choices both with him and many other retail and even wholesale vendors around the world willing to ship to the US. India and Japan also have vendors who will ship to the US with their particular area of origin teas (that's mostly black in India and green in Japan with some exceptions). One problem with China though, if you order they do offer MANY shipping options and of course the higher the price the more tracking and quickness of shipping to your delivery site (as well as some of them being insured to make sure that you get your package). The lower the price, the longer it will take and sometimes you usually don't get the insurance or in some cases even a tracking number. Personally, I have not had any problems (other than waiting to receive something that can take 2-3 months...not really unreasonable coming by literally a "ship (slow boat in memory of an old song) from China" via cargo carrier and needing to go through Chinese and US customs before getting to your local post office) but as always just buy small at first (I usually get a taster bag or so) and see how well the vendor works for your needs. Wish you well in your tea journey, CHEERS Patrick
