I swear this plugin is dangerous as fuck, it should come with no Distortion or a Gain Reduction at least, this shit clipped everything and sounded like straight white noise when I added it on accident - I was shook for the rest of the session
not necessarily, most knobs are tuned to 2 decimal places. things like reverb and delay tweaks can make colossal changes, especially delay which is .1 by default.
Quick Tip: If you are adding heaps to the master, you probably have not mixed your track very well. Go back, and make tweaks there. You can ADD things, but once bounced out, you cannot REMOVE them. lovin your stuff ash
20min to say Its nothing basically. Loudness and some eq to taste. Mastering isnt really a thing since physical supports died and powerful softwares took over.
"I'm going to explain" > explains nothing. What do knobs do? What do curves do that you adjusted? What anything does to a signal? You adjusted volume curve at places where volume peak even didn't reach. Why? Still, at least the process and steps are seen. Thanks.
To be fair, all those things are specific to your track. If you k ow the process, its basically a matter of preference. Just experiment and see what works with your track.
I think most of the viewers are not that of beginners that they don't know what any of the knobs do. Check out some other tutorials like from this channel called 'in the mix'. But I reccomend playing around with the knobs yourself and find out what they do
It's not hard but you have to know what you're doing, you can easily ruin your song with bad mastering, it's recommended to send it to a mastering engineer, it's not as expensive as you'd believe, or learn mastering properly yourself, and take breaks and use reference tracks to refresh your ears. I'm a student mastering engineer, mastering isn't this crazy dark art, it's simple yet complicated at the same time and usually less is more. There's a lot of false mastering info on RU-vid, be careful not to fall into it, such as mastering to only 14 LUFS argument. Be really careful when eq'ing when mastering, you want to enhance what's already there and bring out the best of the track and maybe do a tiny amount of corrective eq if need be, but if you're trying to correct too many things it means the mix more than likely needs work. Get an idea in your head of how you want your track to sound, don't just boost and cut things because you feel like you should, and if something is already good, don't be afraid to leave it alone, you're doing what's best for the track, just because you're mastering it doesen't mean you need to touch every single frequency band or use heavy limiting.
"such as mastering to only 14 LUFS argument" - Can you elaborate on this part because I've seen it recommended to set to around these levels due to the streaming platforms and if you have something interesting or informative explaining further it could help?
Rip I used to use Logic Pro x on my old Mac I spent a stupid amount of money on but it was stolen when I was robbed while at work. I miss my old music stuff so much but ig some people are unlucky and gotta start from the bottom again. Just had to vent tbh
I literally just figured out what saturating Actually does after videos of people talking about using saturation, and then I come across your video and you explain it completely and so easily. Why is this information so hard to come across? Thanks for sharing this! I definitely thought mastering was some kind of secret trick when I started.
cool simple video, super grateful, every video ive seen is just super obnoxious, using words you have to google every sentence. great video to get started and follow along with for beginners
I've used plugins in the mixer before but am just learning how to master a track because I like that "full" sound. To add a high pass in Fruity Parametric EQ 2 like in the video, it looks like you can right click on the number 1 in the purple circle and select High Pass under the Type category in the menu that pops up.
YoungBlaze for FL Studio, the master preset automatically comes with Fruity Limiter that limits the instrumental you use go above 0 dbz. When I took it off, the instrumental sounded highly distorted. It’s better to leave it on, but not to make any tweaks to it.
For sometime now, i was frustrated how my tracks sounds. What missing, i know mastering is the answer, but don't know how to use it up until now. Thnx man u taught me the basics. Now just a little tweaks and im good. Thnx again, more power Godblz.
It's really helpful. Thanks for doing such easy to understand tutorials . Can u please make some tutorial on mixing vocals and specially how to add the right amount of reverb .........☺
"Right amount" is subjective. Listen to songs you like in the genre you're going to make. Make your reverb amounts sound like theirs. None of the people who do mastering for a living had a mastering textbook with a "right amount" section, they just do it by ear.
KODIAXE I literally thought the same thing when I first watched this but maybe he means while recording and mixing not to have a limiter on the Master and wait till you’re at the end of the Mix basically like how he was at the start of the video
When I use my limiter on the Master Track, I have the Gain & Ceiling cranked all the way up while having the Master slider on the mixer turned down to 50% (12.7).
Can i use a refrence track to get the loudness? Like with the plugin first i can test the loudness of already perfect song and then i can employ the same volume value to my mix. Is it okay?
+Peter Van Goublin use the YouLean loudness meter I showed in the vid and see how many LUFS the reference song is. Then you can try to match your song to that. And yes that’s always a good idea!
is there a reason why when you are mastering it in another session of fl studio why it is on insert 1 linked to the master and not just directly on the master insert on the mix board???
Well, one good reason is saving memory. When you export the audio to a new project you're using a lot less than with mixing session with all the plugins and tracks used there.
I really appreciate this video. Gave me a whole lot. I have a question though: i follow your steps and enhance the sound tremedously on my tracks, but the "sound wave" or whatever its called where u can see the twists and turns of the track (for example on Soundcloud) looks pretty much like a solid block of bass. It is a bassy techno track but still, there are parts with just a highpitch synth too. Other technotracks seem to get way more detailed sound waves (or what u call em.. ) thanks for feedback on this and thanks again for your help!
it's the dynamic range. because you made your track esentally louder and put a limiter on it, you lost some of the range between how low or loud your track can get :D
You said when mastering make sure there are no plugins on the master bus, why can't you use EQ 2 and Maximus as shown on the master bus? Is there a reason to export as WAV first?
Cal Malouin cause they might mess up with the other plugins that you already had in your mix. Exporting it to a wav file, makes those plugins you had in your mix to become one with the whole song, there are also other reasons but that’s one of them lol
Doing mastering on your Master while got the hole other stuff open will kill your pc and may cause lag which will destroy your sound (depends on cpu and soundboard). When you export wave and master it in a new project you wont have to deal with these issues, eventhough u got a bad pc or laptop
@ 12:00-12:30 was the most helpful to me, like a switch flipped it all comes together now. Everything I needed to know and was missing explained in 30 sec. thanks man, you probably just made me a future celebrity!
In FL studio why my music sounds so quiet in comparison to other tracks when they are peaking at the same volume in FL studio after mastering Please help me
I don't get why edm must be louder as possible. Your music already sound good and balanced. It doesn't sound too quiet. If someone want to hear it louder they should just turn the volume up. Some producer kill the dynamic in the mastering process and the things loose definition.
You're a very skilled producer, that track sounds killer, but the advice on actual mastering here wasn't great at all. You can't complain about compressing the low end too much because it gets rid of some of the punch, and then use an attack of 2ms, you should go to 10ms and beyond to preserve all of your attack transients
Hey Asher. In Fl Studio, my file doesn't go over 0.0 db and I cannot hear any clipping occurring. However after exporting the file, there is clipping in the exported audio! How do we solve for that?
+Kich Official there’s this thing called “true peaks” that can go above 0 dB without you seeing. If you use Ozene 7 you can fix that easy but I’m not sure how to do it with FL Plugins. Maybe try setting the ceiling to like -0.2 dB, or turn the master “post” gain on maximus down a little.
Quick solution! Don't export to MP3. LAME MP3 has gain staging that will always clip your files. I would suggest normalizing (that is WITH A GAIN KNOB, not a compressor) to -3db, and exporting to a 24bit WAV or FLAC file. Preferrably 96khz if you can. This will just allow for future possibilities and ability to downscale. From there on, you can also export to other formats, sampling rates, bit depths, etc. Turning down the volume digitally 'loses' bits, so there for 24bit will be a standard minimum. When exported from FL and converting to other formats, it's handy to do a trial run first and see how much headroom you have left after conversion. Subtract that from -3db and then turn the gain of the whole file up the resulting number/amount to have your convert/release exports peaking at just below 0dB. because 0dB is actually clipping.
10:08 you mastering so wrong way! In maximus you have to go High filter to near 5k to get sound work nice 3 ribon speakers, and im talking about tweeters! If you have 3 ribon speakers then you should hear bass speaker mid speaker and smallest tweeter! And that High filter is for tweeters! Every car have tweeters inside and if you listening your mix in car you'r mix sounds shit there bc that tweeter plays song not making that squeeze sound. Search litte mastering tips from youtube before you teaching others frong way mastering.
For extreme Noob: Go to the mixer bus where the audio is sent. Then right click and select "File" option, choose "browse state option". Then see towards the left part of the screen You will see different mastering options which immediately masters the song by just selecting them.
This was a very good video. Important to note, what you should get out of this is the concepts behind what he is doing and why, not the exact settings he used. Every song is different. Sub and liked!
It's because he doesn't even know hot to master. Check with real producers, don't learn from a foolish and incompetent boy. No offense intended tho. :)
I'm fully aware of how to use attack and release in compression if that's what you're on about, but that has nothing to do with my original comment. It seems impossible to have a coherent discussion with you so I'm out.
If you know what compression is and how to use attack and release why did you make this comment? Seems pointless for you to even say anything. Im really trying to see your point here. I personally don't use it so if you could provide info on what that is that would be great
DJ MOD OK quick run down my dude attack is how long it takes for your song to get back to you so if you have attacked engage your hair back your audio would’ve bit of latency which is something you don’t want so turn it all the way off release where is Aisha just making a tad bit longer in the bass been because Selo bass is in a transit sound so you want to be trying to get punch from that basically those knobs I let you adjust how soft or hard you want your compression to hit wish is super helpful for getting rid of distortion or adding a bit more The saturation comes in handy as well I suggest looking more into that I suggest just trying to figure out everything with Maximus because once you do it’ll be really easy to use i’ve been using Maximus like the past seven years by the way and shit still kicks ass
Don't know if I'd call this real mastering, but for the bedroom wanna be that doesn't have the funds (not talking about you) it's a good starting point. Only thing is at the end when comparing before and after you should level match the two as you will be naturally drawn to the louder one but that doesn't mean it sounds better.
UgpFpv very true, things sound better loud, it's why the loudness war exists. I find more luck mastering my stuff lower and not trying to crank everything to as loud as it can be without distorting it. When I do that I throw off the dynamics of the song I made. If rather have people turn it up than miss what I've spent time making.
Haha, for sure. But I think all the people looking up how to master on RU-vid are going to be bedroom wanna be's. We know we can't beat the labels after an afternoon of RU-vid & messing around in FL. But it's insane how close we can get.
WOWCRITS Not always, if your cpu can handle it it’s perfectly fine to master within the project file. Bouncing it is mainly to save on that cpu and some people feel more committed to their final mix premastering when they do this
These days there is a trend of recording vocal over pre recorded karaoke music tracks for cover songs.... Can u help me by making a video showing how to record vocal on karaoke track and add effects to the vocal and finally master the mix.l in fl studio 20 .. Plse plse plse.....
