Practice and skills training. Sometimes people don't have the technical skills (athletic or social skills) and need to learn them. But, once they do, practice is essential until it becomes habit.

Improving your mental toughness by positive self talk, visualization, focus and goals is terrific advice regardless of your reasons. Cognitive-behavior therapy emphasizes how thoughts impacts feelings and behaviors, however there are so many variables to consider. Recently, Jack Hatton, a 24 year old Judo Olympic hopeful, died. Although the cause of death has not been released there are reports that his last search was for mental health services. I would be very reluctant to say he wasn't "mentally tough." He was a successful, high level athlete. Many highly successful people have committed suicide. Mental toughness was not their problem. Sometimes, things happen in life and that does not mean that a person is not mentally tough. So although the advice given in this video is excellent, it doesn't mean a person is or is not mentally tough.

Thing is tho, I can repeat positive thoughts until I feel capable, but when you're actually thrown into a stressful situation those thoughts are not useful. You can't just repeat thoughts to yourself when you have to be in the moment, respond and act and deal with everything it throws at you. The emotion comes through and the words you say to yourself are just words.
@ScottSwalwell
@ScottSwalwell 4 года назад
I find practising meditation and awareness in combination to positice thoughts plus visualizations daily of you handling the stressful situations well works. When in the moment stop and take 10 deep breaths counting to 3 when breathing in and 3 when out.
@Mensmentalwealth911
@Mensmentalwealth911 4 года назад
You need to practice until the new thoughts become automatic. Old thoughts need to be replaced by learning more effective and rational ways of thinking. Otherwise, you are right, they will just be pretty words that will be useless when they are needed. Changing your thoughts at a deeper level is essential. Cognitive-behavior therapy is designed to change core beliefs from irrational and unhelpful to rational and realistic and have them become automatic and habitual.
@holycrapfreakinsweet
@holycrapfreakinsweet 4 года назад
the thing here is, when you find yourself in those precarious and stressful moments you mentioned, how you respond is the measure your mental toughness. in short, if you shrink, just goes to show how weak your mental toughness is. honestly, there is no way around it other than that. or in laymans term, an excuse.
@hankjones7054
@hankjones7054 4 года назад
@@holycrapfreakinsweet Yeah but the point of this video is how to develop this mental toughness. Obviously a lot of people watching this consider themselves weak in stressful moments. It's no good saying to them 'well you must be weak' when the whole philosophy of the video is that you can become stronger. It feels like all you're saying is 'tough you've got to deal with it or you're weak' which is not very helpful.
@Mensmentalwealth911
@Mensmentalwealth911 4 года назад
@@holycrapfreakinsweet Is mental toughness all-or-nothing? Is it on a continuum? Can it be situational? An executive can be very tough at work but less so with family issues. An athlete can be focused and mentally during the game but be a follower and give in to peer pressure off the field. Can a person be emotionally tough for 5 years and then for one game lose focus but then return to mental toughness the following game? I think flexibility, adaptability and an expansive view of mental toughness or any other issue is a sign of mental strength. But, I agree that sometimes it can also be used as an excuse. It depends on so many different factors.
@elysabethmuliawan9961

What?? That's mental toughness? It should be stay sane in this insane world and stay kind to those unkind. Ask the victim of wars and abuse who choose to stay alive instead of ending it. There are other 2 Cs for that: courage and compassion. Staying ahead in a competition is not mental toughness is ambitious.
@politereminder6284

Yeah, I agree. I kind of found this video weird. It's good advice and all, but it's great for people who are already in a good place. The sports metaphors threw me off because I am struggling with disability. It felt more like he was talking about physical endurance than about mental toughness.
@danadowning2065
@danadowning2065 4 года назад
@@politereminder6284 Sports metaphors are way overused. I'll go With Mental Toughness as a personality trait that can be learned. For myself, I can trace it to when I was three, four years old (1963, 1964... a whole different world). The things we did and explored on our own.... But there also has to be something in the person. It has been said that many who survived the death camps of World War II had better mental toughness. How can surviving THAT be learned? And I don't know how mental toughness can be separated from self reliance. Since we all have limitations, self reliance is relative. So even with a disability, it is about maximization. And Mental Toughness is far more than physicality. Because of ADHD (years before there was such a thing) I got through high school, college, and grad school without being able to read more than a couple of pages at a time. I attribute that to Mental Toughness. I wasn't going to give up.

Love your comment - compassion for yourself is just as critical as showing it for others and is frequently the missing element in so many of our responses to stressful situations.

Use the body to train the mind. If you want to develop mental toughness, start making use of ice baths and saunas. Be safe with the practice and design it with purpose but both will increase your mental toughness far more than talking gibberish to yourself. Plus you can train it through progressive, measureable overload. On the same line training with weights, doing martial arts, especially grappling arts can develop toughness.
