What is moral injury and how does it relate to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
Dr. Brian Klassen, Clinical Director of the Road Home Program, shares how moral injury relates to military service and how some veterans may experience PTSD.
Moral injury is when one feels they have violated their conscience or moral compass when they take part in, witness or fail to prevent an act that disobeys their own moral values or personal principles.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, guilt and shame are core features of moral injury and are also symptoms of PTSD. The betrayal and loss of trust that could be experienced with moral injury are also common features of PTSD.
Brian Klassen, PhD, is the Clinical Director of the Road Home Program (roadhomeprogram.org/), part of the Wounded Warrior Project's Warrior Care Network: • Warrior Care Network
