I loved the new car smell growing up in the 60's & 70's. Even as a little kid it was always exciting to get a new car and that smell meant something new, big, expensive and fun! But in these later years, the smell as changed and doesn't smell as good as when the materials were more "real".

I always thought it was mostly the upholstery. Cars with leather seats smell especially good, and you get a similar smell if you buy a new leather lounge suite in your home.

It's the same feeling as opening a fresh can of tennis balls. Everyone loves that smell. It's the scent of plastic, rubber, paint, coatings on the leather etc etc. While they're all still fresh.

It smells like all the chemicals and chemical mixtures (toxic and non-toxic) used to formulate the plastics, rubbers and glues. ... And also to coat, color, lubricate, condition, and seal, the leather and wood, including clear coatings on glass and metal.

No lol.. new cars sell themselves. It's a lot harder to sell a broken piece of shit car to someone. So anyone good at sales will be found selling used cars. Depending on the dealer they usually make more money than a new cars salesman. The profit margins are higher. It's very common for them to buy a car at auction and sell it for over 2x what they paid

A mechanic told me it was the hot glue from factory that was in the interiors mixing with the dash plastics material that produced that strong new car smell. I often notice that Toyota's Honda's Ford's Chevy's and Dodges have them the most which are your everyday standard cars. But luxury cars such as Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti, Cadillac etc have a more of a new leather shoe smell as oppose to the new car smell due to less plastics and more leather and wood inside the car.

New car smell was something I have heard of, and smelled for decades. I'm old. Anyway, I remember the new family Impala in 1967, it smelled great! A few years ago we got to sniff a low milage 1959 Oldsmobile that was stored from new. Plastic seat covers from the factory may have contributed to the new car smell. Now I have lot's of experience with old car smell too.

Yes, the cow skin itself, but also the chemicals and solvents (many toxic) used in processing to soften, dye and waterproof etc.

Actually DTU (Technical University of Denmark) made a blind test of new car smell. When people were introduced to the smell not knowing that it was a car, they actually disliked the smell. So the "good" smell of new car is highly psychologic with the presence of a new car.

I remember buying a 2001 Honda Accord EX V6. It had all of the amenities of that time (6-disk in-dash CD changer, leather etc). I could remember how amazingly it smelled. It had a slightly sweet leathery smell that was intoxicating. As a matter of fact, all Honda/Acura Products with leather smelled this way at the time.

I've been gifted by this scent for 5 times now and the last one oddly was a brand new Toyota Forklift and for a few Months, my job was Heaven(outside of loving the Job itself) I live in Montreal and we have real Springs ...mostly and around March this hits me for thinking of new anything. I will be gifted with a Kia "Rio" on June ...29th and with only 30K kph this will be Heaven!!

i got my face kicked in when i was in highschool by some kids who felt i needed to dress and be like them to be normal and after having some reconstructive surgery done, i can no longer smell things like most people. enjoy that new car smell for me everyone... and kids... stop bullying people. its fucking stupid.

Bought a Q7 5 years ago, very strong smell never goes away! we have to open window even in winter time. Every time I am in the car, I feel the same kind of headache . So I always try to avoid being in the car! I also always try to avoid my daughter in the car.

The majority of new car smell is from rubber outgassing. neoprene rubber mats have that smell, as do elastic cords used to hold down cargo.

I bought a four year old BMW and to me it has a new car smell to it. It's mostly the very distinctive leather smell, which is very different to that of previous cars. My previous Alfa Romeo had a very distinctive smell too, which I can only assume is down to the difference in leather that they use.

Every time someone tells me how great "new car smell" is, I look at them intently, trying to decide if they are joking. To me, it's like "new shower curtain smell" (and probably for much the same reason). I would actually avoid buying or leasing a new car in either winter or summer because I fully expect to have to drive with the windows down for a little while till the initial smell wears off. I'm not surprised to hear it called "outgassing" because the term just intuitively *feels* appropriate.

Well I bought a 2016 car about 2 months ago, and it had that smell. It has faded a lot, but I can still make it out. So the dealership has a way of achieving this, because my car was not brand new. I would like to know how to get it that way on my own. People mention leather, and while that makes sense, my car does not have a leather interior. I’ve bought a few sprays, but they just don’t smell the same.

The interior scent of brand new ford cars are best....they smell like mix of chocolate, butter, strawberry, different kind of fruits, little bit of paint smell (not too strong), crushed woods, etc..... unlike other new cars which smells like different kind of fuel substances, and various chemicals mix at onces.....

I will actually agree with that. All my fords had a very distinctive smell, a very strong new car smell that lasts a long time. My 2017 Ford Fusion’s lease just ended and the sales guy that took it back couldn’t believe it still had a new car smell and the leather still had a strong leather smell... must be the leather in Titanium models which I think are actually some of the best quality seats... my Mazda 6 smelled new for a week or so and it was gone.. my new 2020 Edge smells so good right now (two weeks in) and I hope it stays that way.

Asian taxi smell. On holiday in Singapore, most taxis and Ubers have a very distinctive nice scent, kinda similar to new car smell. My friend bought a new Lexus and I noticed it and the same kind of smell.

I remember my nose started running after driving a new car. My sinuses (and body) were saying "NO!". You are taking in the off-gassing chemicals of 50 to 100 different coatings, surfaces and solvents at once. A large number of them are harmful.

That is the smell of the outgassing of softened plastics. Glues. Ever heard of sniffing glue? See that stuff is really really bad for you. You get too much of it and you can get blood disorders. That's why on a new carpet rolls you will always see a warning. Toxic vapors. Open all windows and let carpet air out for 48 hours before occupying. Something like that. But most people neither the means or desire to heed that warning. Everyone seems to think its cute. Leukemia is kinda cute.

I think peoples affinity for 'new car smell' is 90% psychology. Who isn't excited by getting a new car? Clean... Fresh... Brand new. The smell of a new car associates people with the 'high' of a new vehicle purchase. I don't think it can be replicated at all. All that new car smell air freshener is bogus and can't evoke what makes new cars smell great... The envigoration of HAVING a new car.

i actually do not like new car smell, let me tell you why. my family rented a car when we were by yosemite in california. it smelled new. the roads went up in altitude and made my ears hurt. so through classical conditioning i subconsciously associate the smell of a new car with ear pain. the end.
