interesting to note that the guy who ran sunset corp, Daniel Lopatin, also wrote the soundtracks to Uncut Gems and Good Time, as well as collaborated with The Weeknd on his most recent album. Really interesting to see that such a small, obscure youtube channel belongs to such a big name
It’s crazy for me because I loved nobody here and was a huge fan of OPN separately, and went a while not knowing about the eccojams sideproject, so when I heard it I had this divine moment of “shit, Daniel made ‘nobody here’ didn’t he?”
Vaporwave was created to make nostalgia for the 80s, but now I'm just nostalgic for the peak of its popularity. I remember I even made a few vaporwave tracks lost to time and I was a kid. It was such a good era for underground internet electronic music. Saint Pepsi is one that always comes to mind.
It's so strange how your perception of the "decline" of vaporwave differs from mine. I only discovered vaporwave in 2017, and I got hooked on it from then until 2019. That, to me was when vaporwave "declined", even though vaporwave still soothes a craving of my ears to this day. But I think what's actually happening is that vaporwave will always be here. Like "nobody here", vaporwave will always continue to exist, and people will happen upon it at random times. It might touch them, and some who have loved vaporwave may move on after a couple of years, but there'll always be a new set of unknowing folk who'll get introduced to it again
@@you_gullible_fucc I got into vaporwave in 2017 too! My first exposure was the video "USED TO KNOW" by Xorox (an adaptation of Lucien Hughes' "CRISIS"). It might not be as popular, but to me vaporwave never died. Not as long as we have channels like Deep Sea Current, Vapor Memory, Pad Chennington, etc. releasing mixes and, in Pad's case, new music.
Vaporwave is still a big thing nowadays, there's so many fucking records coming out on liminal garden, underwater computing, vapor memory. And of course we have the slushwave fest every year!
The rainbow road in ‘Nobody Here’ is from an extremely rare Taito game called Laser Grand Prix. The game is lost media, and the only things that exist is part of the laserdisc that the footage it uses for the background and some screenshots.
And Laser Grand Prix was apparently very popular in Japan in the 1980s. The rainbow road seen in Nobody Here is very likely the origin of Mario Kart's Rainbow Road.
There's some Boards Of Canada fan videos from the mid-2000s (notably a 2006 one for Roygbiv that I recall) which are pretty vaporwavey, using altered 80s commercials and stuff. Boards Of Canada's whole gig was the feeling of nostalgia as well, but for around the 60s/70s mostly, since they made their first releases in the 90s.
Actually gonna pick myself up on this before someone else does. They made their first PUBLIC releases in the 90s. Supposedly there's 80s BoC stuff but it's little more than legend honestly.
No, no, no. Just stop it. Every homemade fan video that uses old TV clips is not vaporwave. And yes, Boards of Canada is very "nostalgic"--even the Boards of Canada name is--but that doesn't make Boards of Canada vaporwave. Roygbiv is definitely referencing 70s/80s public television or local television theme music; it might even be directly quoting the music of some show, it sounds so close to stuff that I heard as a youth. But that doesn't make it vaporwave. The guy who did a lot of the artwork for Dead Kennedys--Winston Smith--was making crazy collages using advertisements at least as far back as the early '80s.
I see what you want to say here, but I think profd65 is right (despite doing it in rude form) saying that it's not vaporwave. But you're right finding some common in these themes. I recomend you and everyone else interested in this topic to get to know about hauntology. Mark's Fisher "Ghosts of my life" is an interesting and important book about hauntology phenomena. (I apologise if I spelled something incorectly, english is not my first language)
Vaporwave, even if it is "dead", it will always be one of my favorite music genre's Edit:I didn't realize after 2 years of this video being released it would still get comments. It was a joke I had in mind as i wanted to see how people would think. It's more than vaporwave that's still big and amazing, its a genre that is perfect.
@@classicpinball9873 I do know that, I find it a lot, one of my favorite songs that came out last year was a Vaporwave song, though I cant remember the name
godzillafan22 rateyourmusic.com/customchart?page=1&chart_type=top&type=album&year=alltime&genre_include=1&genres=Vaporwave&include_child_genres=t&include=both&limit=none&countries= I find this site to be pretty useful for finding new stuff. You can filter it as well by year, there's some stuff from 2020 worth checking out. Maybe you'll recognize the song from the album art?
@@woodfordmetcalfe9435 people have been saying vaporwave is dead for years. Most people who say it now are memeing. There's been similar meme in punk rock since 1978.
I’ve never been too into vapor wave, but I can always appreciate the idea that for some things we can always go back and find the origin to. Really neat.
Came here right after I just got Nobody Here recommended to me for the second time on YT. Pretty fascinating though. Definitely ahead of their time, that's for sure. Finally understand the context of the channel. Good stuff.
@@Josh.V what? Show me one vaporwave song with atleast 3 million views on youtube this year, if you're talking about synthwave, sure, maybe. But vaporwave, absolutely not
@@Josh.V also synthwave is nothing like vaporwave and has nothing to do with it, they're not even closely related genre-wise, just because the name is similar doesn't mean they're the same type of music
im sad you didnt go into more detail regarding the End of Life Entertainment Scenario. The glitchy horror visual are genuinely fascinating, im always curious to hear what other's takes are on it
Well looking at the comments to that video, the visuals come from a game called Manhunter: new york, and the song sampled was from Roger Troutman's My Emotions. Roger Troutman was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds outside his recording studio. A block away, his brother was found dead in his car with a self inflicted gun shot wound to his head. It was speculated that his brother killed him and then himself, as to why he did it, I'm not sure. So I imagine the visuals in the video is a sort of reference to Roger's death in a way.
Lol, Vaporwave... A neon/pastel colored fever dreamlike nostalgia that was never alive. It inspired me to make music, and still holds some liminal place in my heart, playing synth laden tracks somewhere in the distance. I loved this vid man. Really cool channel.
Nice video Cap KRB! Oh yeah! Sunsetcorp and waterfallvoyeur channels! Awesome birthplaces of the early vaporwave visual style. Inspired me in December 2012 after The Needle Drop's review of a Mac Plus album to change the direction of my channel into vaporwave section slightly from electronic music videos i did earlier after Boards of Canada inspirations. Still making music videos through the time and so happy to see how this uniq subganre grows with a time. People loved such concept and build with this a huge fandom. Thanks Daniel, Ramona and James Ferraro for their participation into this ideology for all of the vaporwave fans over the world like us! :D
in case you're wondering where the footage for "nobody here" comes from: it's from the laserdisc game LASER GRAND PRIX by taito, this is from the "fantastic race" track, which would have been the last track you would have raced on!
i'm not a vaporwave listener (No issue with it, just not something i listen to) have never talked about it, never googled about, had just never been something on my mind ever. A few days ago nobody here appeared on my recommended. I've no idea why, but I'm glad it did, I think it's cool that one of the first songs that birthed a genre appeared for no reason
There is a video titled, "TAITO LASER GRANDPRIX / タイトー レーザーグランプリ" uploaded Oct 7, 2011. It seems to be the origin of the rainbow road seen in "Nobody here". However, the "origin" was uploaded about 2 years AFTER "nobody here". I found a video that had a rip of the laserdisc this animation (nobody here) originally came from in 1080p. Link in replys. That is were the rainbow road came from.
@@netako yeah, because too much bots were spamming links to youtube videos, so my comment has been removed because it seen as spam, even though it wasn't :(
It doesn't matter who you are, i think we can all agree that vaporwave is probably the most diverse genre of all time. Every artist has there own special unique take on the genre and style, it's windows 96 is so different from Vektroid, and why Death's Dynamic Shroud is so different from Blank Banshee. Vaporwave is just not a music genre or aesthetic to me, it's more of a canvas to paint your own thoughts and feelings onto the world and I thinm that's why it's so unique.
Interesting how this is getting recommended again. I remember when I first saw it back then and thought it strange that such protovapor wasn't more widespread.
My favorite take on this pitch shifted musical plunder stuff is the Doomer version of Nutshell by Alice in Chains. If you weren't depressed when you started listening you will be by the time you're done. Its perfect for your most down moments.
It's funny, this seems to be what happened with your Cryptids of Wikipedia video. I see that it has substantially more views than your other videos and it's the one YT recommended to me that led me here. I've been going through your back catalogue since then and dropped a sub, too. On a related topic, I follow a lot of lost media channels. The number of times that a lost and forgotten piece of media ends up being found on a 15 year old YT upload with 3 views is astounding. There's several lifetimes of digital archeology on this platform.
Thanks for the video! This is fascinating - right now I'm reading Simon Reynolds's Retromania (published in 2011)... Daniel Lopatin and 'Nobody Here' are mentioned in one of the first chapters, and I immediately thought: this description of the music sounds a lot like vaporwave! Who could imagine that the video and that channel were going to resurface in 2020!
Hope u get big one day if RU-vid’s recommended each other everyone would find it easier TO find each other and you’d all get more subs because I don’t know any other channels that are good just flat out besides the mainstream like idubbz and Sam hyde
next people will find out about ezpups, splashkittyartist and kay2036s videos and their significance towards the history of the animation meme community before the animation meme community even existed its only a matter of time
Yo guys, I took the initiative of contacting the guy who posted the first comment on Nobody Here, lesgenssontmechants pourleternite. me: " insta-sub. , loving the content so far. btw, why did yo u leave that comment on sunsetcorps video 'nobody here'? your comment read 'The road to salvation'." lesgenssontmechants pourleternite: "i cant remember.. but i think the music made me think of a better place.. warm and accepting" Btw this was on a really fucking disturbing video on his channel called '...', he has a few videos uploaded titled that way. sorry for any mistakes cross faded af rn kek
On a similar note, for anyone who's aware of trap music (the EDM style, not the hip-hop style), there was a producer who captured the trap sound perfectly, almost 10 years before it emerged as a genre. Look up "Benga - Middle Man"
