Phlearn's Pro tutorials are absolutely amazing and detailed. If you want to learn Photoshop the right way, Phlearn is the Princeton of Photoshop education.
Im lucky enough to go to school for this, but when I first started there was a lot of basic stuff I didnt understand like layer masks. Glad someone is here to help out!
Amazing video thanks for sharing the advantage of non-destructive edit and the most important how we need to save them for future edits thanks again and greetings from the Bay area California
Aaron. using an adjustment layer to color will respect the shadows and highlights of the original image. So you will not be forced to dodge and burn after coloring for realism. Btw, I learned about the adjustment layers from you Aaron. So thanks.
There are certain filters like “liquify” ( and plug in filters like NIK effects, etc) that won’t work unless you “stamp the image”.(cont’l alt shift +E). If you do this even after converting it to a smart object you cannot go to lower layers and make adjustments. How do you get around this?
Thanks for asking this. I can't seem to find this discussion point on any vid/tutorial. I'd like to work nondestructively, but much if my workflow involves plugins and the filters tab.
Same applies to using filters, always convert the layer to a smart object. That way you can alter the values of any filter if you change your mind. Not doing so bakes the values of the filter used permanently, into the layer which means you would have to delete the layer and start all over again 😊
Great tips! How do you continue to work nondestructively when working with the filters tab and plugins? Don't you need a full (merged) pixel based layer at the top for those to work? And then the previous layers are moot. A bit confused - cheers!
He did use the colour blend mode for the destructive one instead of the hue blend mode lol. I wonder if it was to get his point across more since the dress colour would be slightly different. But generally speaking, non destructive is the best, also yeah, adding more than a 100 history states in photoshop. Awesome video.
Non-destructive has an advantage, but not as crazy as you showing it, e.g. the wording can and should also be kept in an extra layer for destructive. Thats also true for many other things, you just have to foresee and plan accordingly.
I don't think there is any, other than the PSD files take up more physical space on your hard drive, because all the smart objects store the original information in them. And more layers means more file size. But in this day and age, it's not a disadvantage because our storage is essentially unlimited.
Another method to supplement this: If you are using filters or FX, change the layer to a smart object, so you can adjust the settings non destructively.
I mean... non-destructive should be the most basic approach to any kind of editing. It's absurd how many professional editors apply everything direct on the original layer, rasterized. This is an almost unacceptable workflow, a big failure. I mean... if we are going to work destructetively, then get rid already of the ctrl+z... right?! Smart object, smart filters, layer masks and adjustment layers. It's not hard at all.
Great video, only 1 complaint. What happened to the bloopers at the end, there were none. That drops you from a perfect A+ down to a C grade We expect better from you Aaron next time it's a note to your mama.
@@jimbobaroobud I saw that, but at the beginning is lame compared to seeing them at the end after watching what appears to be a perfect video & then you see the mistakes made in creating that perfection, so my comment stays a C & probably an F for your answer as the reply wasn't even directed to you.
11:17 PLEASE, stop using these B camera shots. They are SO annoying. Every time you look into the camera, there is a feeling of connection. Every time you use the other camera without looking into it, I keep wondering who is behind me that you think is more important. You need to be my teacher and not a 1990s bank commercial.
You can't do non destructive retouching in Photoshop. Non destructive is when you can make an image grading, retouch that, than switch the grading below the retouch and everything is updated.
