What Is Nostos | Upcoming VR Open World Game

Nostos is a very ambitious open world game set to release later this year that visually is right on trend. Nostos as a game, features many of the same systems and features you would see in survival games where you live off the land, hunt, build and explore by yourself or with a group... but Nostos and it's open world are made special by one key difference about this game and most other survival and open world games.

Nostos is a VR (Virtual Reality) game, first and foremost.
Nostos as a VR game will ALSO be playable on PC and will be cross platform between different VR units and PC.
There is a weird nerd pipe dream of living until we see that Sword Art Online style reality where we just plug in and are taken in this total new world that blurs the lines between just a new world and an open world game.
We want that experience gamified.
Nostos makes an important step towards that goal by helping to normalize VR and leaning into, what I feel, is VR's number one it does and can do better than everything else. Immersion.

This feels like it's going to be a really important game for the future of VR. It's really sad that we've had the headsets for a while now, but all the developers seem way too scared to actually sink some cash into developing high end games for them.

I get the feeling that this game will take off, be important for the future of VR, but not really be groundbreaking as some other games have been as of late (in terms of numbers). But then, one day, maybe 20, 20, hell, 40 years from now, when VR will be more available and be more advanced, someone will look unto VR games of the past and say "Hey... Why don't we try this again?..."

VR needs to become widely accessible first. I absolutely love VR, but its uses for the current price keep it niche. I am developing a game myself to help skirt the issue by making it VR/Non-VR coop. I wanna VR, but my friends can't, so I am bringing them together. Not a new concept, but this is my best solution to the current problem. However, when we get good eye tracking and Foveated viewing (for lower end PCs), get a high enough resolution for more practical uses, and make the whole experience more comfortable, it will be far more widespread and companies will finally be able to afford to make major games just for VR. We are still pioneering the new tech.

Agreed. Both of which clearly put a lot of development time on atmosphere through music, visuals, colour palettes, architecture etc that make being in that world genuinely enjoyable, even if you are just walking somewhere. When devs manage to make walking between places ALSO have a rewarding purpose (rather than fast travelling to get quests done) that's when you have a living, breathing world that is immersive.

one thing nobody is talking about, but i think is absolutely beautiful, is that the monsters and the world itself takes very very clear and obvious inspiration from nausicaa and the valley of the wind. you can see it so badly in the enemies, the style of vehicle, and the clothing style. it all feels very nausicaa esque

That music really has some strong Nier: Automata vibes. As for the game in general, we have seen big claims many times before, we'll see how it goes. VR atm is still niche but it's picking up speed slowly and new tech like Nvidia VR works and foviated rendering will bring down the requirements to run vr or make more detailed graphics possible

Ohhhh snap that season change to winter gave me chills, snow biomes don't get enough love in the gaming world imo. I hope this game gives a really good impression for what's possible in the future with VR. A lot of people think of VR as a passing fad, but I've always thought that with the right type of game, and the right level of tech behind it (smaller, more powerful headsets with high speed wireless) it could be the next true "innovation" in MMOs that has the popularity of WoW back in its prime.

4:46 - legendary the way you put that, you're absolutely right. the reason i invested in a VR headset was also to enhance a game I was already playing (VRChat) and so did lot's of my friends who i got to know trough VR. And now that I have the product I am able to explore a ton of other great VR experiences (I'm hooked on beat saber atm).

this is the first video of yours that I have seen and I am very impressed. as for the game it just breathes Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and that is a perfect setting for a game tailor made to be played in VR, setting it's own pace and difficulty not frantically trying to emulate a game meant for keyboard and mouse.

im going to the US by the time occulus quest arrives there, im definetly buying one just for this game (and many others i have had my eyes on). I like to think i have a six sense that tells me when im going to like something or get along with someone. On people it works 7/10. On games it's 8/10. This games, gives the feeling of a life changing game for me, to the point that it's the first game i never want to share with close friends, this looks like a game i will not only love, but make a part of myself. I had never heard of this "Nostos" game until watching this video literally just now, but I already love the music and artstyle! That's very much like the kind of style I would want to use in any games I'd make if ever I can get a career as a video game producer. XD

This is Made in Abyss game. Even if it doesn't have darkness of the anime, the anime itself started relatively light and comfy so we don't know what will future bring.

Nostos will NOT be a desktop game if you read the steam page properly, the only input and supported hardware is VR What they mean by PC & VR is that it will be on VR stores (like Oculus Store) and PC stores (like Steam)

The testing in Gamscom had people sitting at PC - I'll shoot them an email and confirm. Even some of the footage they've released show people sitting playing it in almost 3rd person.

@@FlowerSong606 Yeah they do make nice games in beginning. Only to find out few months later game is at the brink of destruction because netease is basically you common F2P MMO western publisher and acts exactly like that. They are basically Nexon but with different company name.

Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this one! Also, I love your view on VR. I think you explained it really well, and it's a sentiment I find myself agreeing with completely. That VR should be an addition to gaming, that it's an accessory, like a joystick or a racing wheel, that we should stop trying to make people leave everything behind for this new thing and instead try to focus on VR's strong points and selling it as something you can use to improve your gaming. I personally have a joystick, a racing wheel and pedals, multiple guitars, drums, mics, four different types of controllers, and just about every other accessory you can imagine. I didn't buy them to ditch my PC and leap into the new age of gaming. I bought them to enhance my gaming, to make it more fun, I bought them so my racing could feel more like racing, so my flying could feel more like flying, so games designed for the controller could be played with a controller. They exist to enhance the game, to do what they do well as best as they can. Instead of trying to create all these games to lure people into the VR market, people should focus on making outstanding products that can utilize VR to the best of it's capabilities, and rely on their product being absolutely amazing enough that people want to buy it.
