Managing a rare, but chronic lung disease. The Balancing Act offers solutions.
Dr. Leah Lande, a Pulmonologist with Lankenau Medical Center; Philip Leitman, Co-Founder/President of NTM Info & Research.. and NTM Patient, Betsy Nardi, join us to discuss NTM Lung Disease. NTM stands for Nontuberculous mycobacteria. A NTM lung infection is a chronic condition that can get progressively worse and can be debilitating in some patients. There is no cure. So awareness is crucial. And
the earlier the diagnosis, the better. NTM has some very familiar and common symptoms, such as a persistent cough; lack of energy; night sweats and fever; weight-loss and shortness of breath. Dr. Leah Lande shares her expertise on NTM. And NTM Patient, Betsy Nardi, shares her story of her diagnosis and how she’s managing. You’ll also meet a man, Philip Leitman, who, along with his wife, Fern, started an organization: NTM Info & Research, aimed at spreading awareness of this disease. Hear their story of unconditional love and determination.

After years of having off/on cough I finally became so sick that I couldn't function. I went to several doctors before I found one who did the right tests. The symptoms are often indolent and come/to. I've been on treatment for 2 years and finally feel well enough to stop treatment. Wish me luck!

Did she have surgery before 2014? 5-20 years prior to 2014. The SORIN T3 machine was used in hospital ORs causing this infection. See the webinar.

It started with a cough last year. My ENT doctor ignored it for a year. Then i went in for an X-ray and CT-Scan myself which yielded centrilobular nodules in the left upper lobe. My new doctor - a pulmonologist started Tuberculosis treatment upon detecting it but did not order the other tests (Culture tests for normal aerobic pathogens etc. and well as NTM). I kept having night sweats, weight loss and coughing did not feel like to improve even for a day after 4 months. Had to change doctor again who discovered Klebsiella pneumonia and coughing still did not improve after antibiotics for that. Later doctor put the blame as psychogenic cough since he could not diagnose. AFB culture came positive for MOTT (mycobacterium Avium complex) or NTM and since it is India where it is not common literally having to convince labs to do the tests for drug sensitivity. Waiting for those results. All I can say is being poorly diagnosed and ignored by doctors makes you realize what a hopeless country you are born with and then you watch these videos which give you hope - that in the same world, people are getting treatment elsewhere. So lives end because we don't get the same treatment at different parts of the world. I do not have any regrets if i die with this condition because i tried my best to get myself cured with the facilities i have here and there is no global healthcare and no hope for us not in the first world countries. Cheers and love to anyone who is reading.
