When it comes to silk bedding and accessories, safety matters. You should only buy products that are independently tested and certified to be safe. Today we’re going to talk about Oeko Tex, a preeminent and trustworthy certification for the textile industry.
At Mulberry Park Silks, we work hard to educate our clients about silk. We want you to understand exactly what you’re buying. And we guarantee that our products are made from the highest quality silk. They’re made from 100% pure mulberry silk charmeuse woven from the highest grade silk fiber.
Our silk is gentle and moisturizing to hair and skin. It’s also hypoallergenic, non-irritating, and temperature regulating. We meet the highest standards of beauty, performance, and comfort.
But we take it a step further. All fabric used in our silk products is independently certified for safety. We use the Oeko Tex Standard 100. This ensures that everything we make is free from harmful chemicals, including toxins and irritants. The Mulberry Park Silks items you bring into your home are safe, natural and healthy -- even for a baby!
So what exactly is the Oeko-Tex Standard 100? It’s actually a global testing and accreditation program for consumer textiles. Oeko-Tex sets standards to screen fabrics for chemicals and other harmful substances. Textiles can only be certified if all components meet the rigorous test criteria from raw materials through finished products.
Oeko Tex certification means that independent labs have analyzed the product for a variety of harmful substances used in producing fabric. To receive certification, all components and materials must comply with the test criteria. Many of these criteria are much more stringent than government regulations.
At that time, a product is officially Oeko-Tex certified and is issued a designation stating "OEKO-TEX CONFIDENCE IN TEXTILES -- STANDARD 100 -- Tested for harmful substances."
The process for Mulberry Park Silks to be Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified is quite rigorous and must be renewed on an annual basis. It is a voluntary process and standard around the globe. Certification begins with our factory submitting an application to the OEKO-TEX Institute for testing of textile products.
We send both raw silk materials, as well as finished items such as bedding to the lab. The lab then tests the items according to protocol based on the “intended use of the product.” Silk used for bedding is tested differently than silk used for a decorative wall hanging.
While we know that silk is naturally hypoallergenic and non-irritating, we believe you should be certain that any silk product you bring home is free from contaminants. Low-quality silk may contain pesticides, groundwater waste, and other harmful chemicals.
We’re proud that the silk fabric used in our bedding and accessory collections conforms to the highest standards in the textile industry. That’s why we proudly display our Oeko-Tex certification on our packaging, website, and labels.
Oeko-Tex is just one of many safety certifications available in the textile industry. Another common label you may see is Global Organic Textile Standard, or GOTS. This is a different certification than Oeko-Tex that relates solely to organic textiles. A GOTS means that the fabric contains at least 70% organic natural fibers. The GOTS designation is frequently used for organic cotton and other natural fibers.
For example, in our Silk Aromatherapy Lavender Eye Pillow, the pillow insert is made with 100% GOTS certified unbleached cotton, while the exterior silk pillow covering is made with Oeko-Tex certified silk.
Both GOTS and Oeko-Tex mean that consumers can rely on the safety of the fabric they’re buying. Along with silk, you may see the Oeko-Tex label on cotton, bamboo, Tencel, wool, and even leather.
Along with being Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, our products are great for hair, skin, and overall wellness. Knowing that our silk sheets, pillowcases, and accessories are entirely safe to use will give you peace of mind as you indulge in all the beauty benefits of Mulberry Park Silk.
Remember that not all silk is created equal, and recognizing quality silk from an inferior product can be confusing.
