I'm just now learning about water culture for orchids. I had no idea! but love the concept because the main thing I like about orchids is its root system. I've been trying to figure out how I could display the orchid roots. NOW if have a way. Thanks for showing me the way. I appreciate what your doing.

I’ve switched to water culture because my 2 first and only orchids were rotting in the bark and moss they came in. I also live in the desert so it gets dry fast but I am rehabilitating my friends orchid which is doing amazingly well in bark so I kept it that way and she’s thriving. Your videos are so much more informative than most other big orchid gurus out there! Thank you so much. 🌸

Thank you so much for this thorough explanation. I live in New Orleans, LA, where we run the A/C or the heat (like today, it's in the 50° range, and it's cold!) nearly every single day. I'm going to try to put my Vandaceous orchids, as well as my Phals, into semi-water culture, with the assistance of some seedling heat mats and LED full-spectrum grow lights. I've kept them outside during the warmer months, which they love, but they all suffer during the time that they're living indoors. My Vandas are accustomed to receiving a full bath once or even twice daily from April to early October, with almost full sun (plus reflected light from the pool), so when they're indoors, they have a noticeable setback, and I think that this method might help me give them more stable and consistent feeding, watering, and, of course, light levels if they're indoors with a system like this. I think that keeping them in water culture year-round with light levels that I can easily tweak, with a way to prevent them from being in super cold water, they should be happy. Thanks again!

Thank you for such a great video, Danielle! I'm slowly converting some of mine to water, as this winter really challenged my plants in NZ sphagnum...the moss just deteriorated too quickly and held onto too much water...ugh! My hanging ones did fine, because they dried out faster...but the shelved ones...the moss degraded quickly! I think the moss doesn't like the cooler temps. Last year i had them in a warmer room, but the heating bill was crazy high. Time to try something different!!! Thanks for sharing your wisdom! I'll keep you posted on how we are doing!

Wow! A very informative orchid video! One of my greatest thrills in this hobby is when I repotted a newly purchased harlequin phal. Her roots were all rotted. I put her in a small amount of water and within a month there was a root nub! That was about a year ago. Now she has many healthy roots and hoping within a year she spikes. I agree that we all have to be diligent in watching for root rot, etc but isn’t that the enjoyment of this hobby. I love trying different ways of growing. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Danielle received two beautiful Phalaenopsis in April when I was sick from a friend in a beautiful pot in spagmoss, so I just kept watering every few weeks. Last month I noticed it was so dry and one leaf was yellow and brown and just came off. I took everything off and found the plants were stapled to regifoam and spagmoss and was so dried out I soaked the roots for two days as they were dried into the moss cleaned out and put them in fresh water. I will watch and see if they recover some of the roots are turning green.

But I'm so happy more and more people have good result In wc. And congracts with all the subs your doing Soo well❤ Lol I keep typing extra. Rose's orchid ramblings! You are so right! I feel like because we can see the roots water culture is more work. When you can't see the roots you water and hope the orchid is doing well in water culture you can see if it's doing well. Plus I find in the warmer months they are so thirsty, especially the fine rooted one's, that it's hard to keep up with watering them! I've certainly made a few mistakes in my water culture journey but orchids are so resilient and most have bounced back. Also because I grow in water culture I could see much quicker that something was wrong and that helped a lot. I have 67 orchids now and it takes me 3 hours every Monday to clean each vase, check the orchid thoroughly and give them fresh water. I enjoy every minute of it but during a busy week it's hard to put aside 3 whole hours, plus I look briefly at most of them every other day. I really want more orchids but I don't think I have the time right now. I'm covering for someone at my job so I'm working extra hours for the next 3 months 😡 I hate it but at least I'll be done covering by spring. Talk to you soon ~ Danielle

Danielle's Orchid Ranch 3 hours boy I feel like it takes me halve a day... But that's prop me moaning 🤔😂😂😂 should time it once I have a good time again. And then realy should divide them in groups and do 1 hour a day.... mabey... I got so I scored I revisited my water culture phals and filmed it but 39 min of ramblings need loads of editing lol. So Wil air that next Monday or so and I realy wann e show my grow room it's empty now so I can clean it and reorganize it without breaking any plants and take advantage and spray them with a light insecticide fungicide. As protection and preventative measures when I move orchids outside..... I'm truly inspired by you all. Your roots look great btw I wish pray hope in a few months my orchids will have more roots. And indeed less is more. 67 is a lot for 1 and noting for some. If your work needs more time how annoying it is it's wise to say you have a stop in new orchids...i never could adhere to my own rules. 🙈 But girl your rocking it. Kind regards rose

I picked it up to water (it was in bark, in a well ventilated pot), and the leaves jumped lol. I've had the two leaves upside down in a container in water so they don't become dehydrated and the water doesn't get in the crown. I've failed with bark and sphag. Do you have any suggestions? Hi Danielle, I'm so happy to have come across this video on water culture. I've been wondering if this method of growing orchids would even work! Your wonderful collection has proven that it does. Thanks for your great video video. I have one question/comment: You don't seem to have a problem with algae, everything seems to be clear. Is algae growth ever an issue with your collection? If it has been how have you dealt with it? Another thing I'm curious about is the light level that you provide for your orchids. Could you please comment on that. maybe you've done a video on that topic already? I'll check your postings to see. Thanks again!

Bork I personally have never grown an orchid this way but I think it could work if done the right way. I know of someone who tried this but she didn’t understand at the time how important Oxygen is to their roots and she submerged to much of the root system which killed the plant. My advice would be to keep only a small portion of the roots in the water and keep the stem/rhizomes out of the water. I think the nutrients in the aquarium would be very beneficial to the orchid. Let me know how your experiment goes!

So I have two Phals, that were badly dehydrated and i read to put them in water and dump the water every 12 hours. I really havent done that, but i would let them dry out for 8 hours. @daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 7 месяцев назад
That’s a really good question, when we know that they have no roots we tend to think that they need more water. That’s what I thought when I first started growing too, and I couldn’t understand why the roots wouldn’t grow. While it is good to make sure you are hydrating the plant your instinct to drain off the water is a good one. If you give them Water constantly, They have no reason to grow roots. You want them to feel deprived of water so that they will grow roots. So you want them to get some water but you also want them to be thirsty. I have found giving them some water and then draining it off for a few days before I give them water again, will prompt them to grow roots quicker.

Hi.... It took me 6 months to figure out that bark only worked SOMETIMES, and that I initially bought my plants for the blooms not the root, therefore half of my big collection had poor roots. Now I realize no matter the situation, sometimes they just don’t do well, daaaa, so I am trying this water culture. Immediately I noticed the leaves perked up, I am still pestering them daily to adjust to the level of water, and they some have poor roots to begin with. What I would like to know is do they always have to be in clear vases, I see that you aren’t worried too much about keeping the top leaves out and open and they are funnelled into the vase, this is different, I am fussing and positioning them, maybe I don’t need to,,,,Wow this is very new to me since May of this year and I love it, keeps me very busy and happy, I have two new plants with fairly good roots in semi water, I am not going to try the drying out method, I am happy to observe and change water and keep an eye on the levels. I live in the Valley of BC which is very like Seattle weather, without the sea at first hand, good humidity during the winter due to RAIN. I am really learning a lot from your channel and buy just phals at the grocery store, I find the nurseries are more money, and they are exactly the same plant. I found my first phal this week in BARK, so I kept her in bark and so far so good, but lately it JUST has to be lava in my environment....with what I find at the grocery stores..... Thank you so much for all the info, I have to watch a few times to let it REALLY SINK IN, and to everyone that is reading, who cares if we have lave or bark or moss stuck to our slippers every day, just love these girls - Georgia

MD Traveller I do change them when in bloom, you have to be very careful about not disturbing the roots to badly because she could start bud and bloom blasting. I know many people wait until it's done blooming but personally I unpot immediately. You have to go with what your comfortable with.

@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 3 года назад
Sally Blakebrough I don’t have any Jewel orchids so unfortunately I can not confirm if they can be grown in water culture. I believe Jewel Orchids are terrestrial plants which means that they may be more challenging to grow hydroponically as they are not epiphytic. I do know many people grow terrestrial plants in semi hydro with success so perhaps that would be a good option.

@@TheHukomsinQueensland lol, very common struggle when you first start WC. Phalaenopsis roots can dry and the plant will be fine. Then for the rest of the week you drain off the water and allow the roots to dry. If you live in a very dry place and your plant does not like going without water you will start to see the leaves droop. However most Phalaenopsis enjoy semi water culture.

Mala Dangol I amnot sure what your question is but if it is how long to keep the orchid in water - Full Water culture is a small portion of the roots in the water at all times - Semi Water culture is a portion of the roots in the water for 2 days and allow them to dry for 5 days but you can increase they days they are in the water if you live in a hot climate and they need more water then that.

Can cymbidium orchids be in water culture?

allyn estalita I don’t have any cymbidium orchids so I can’t really answer this question with any certainty. First you’d have to know if your cymbidium is a terrestrial orchid, if it is I think it may struggle with water culture, if it’s an epiphytic or a Lithophyte orchid it may do well in water culture.

phil lowery it doesn't work for everyone. You have to grow in the way that works best for your environment.
