+Michael Wright I am a homeless teen, moving from shelter to shelter so I can afford to pay for my education in hopes of one day getting a better life. At least, I am lucky because as a Canadian citizen, my tuition isn't very high and it is partially covered by a scholarship. With the help of a student association, I got a macbook. You're the one who is stupid. Homeless doesn't mean stupid, what do you think a homeless person would do with a MacBook? We are human too. Some of us did not choose this life and want to get out.

2:50 "You feel angry for a few days, but then you just realize, this is how it is." That one hit me. I remember in high school, we were learning about how the Chinese were exploited in the production of the CNR (Canadian National Railway), the Head Tax, the mistreatment of Japanese-Canadian during WWII... I legit resented white people for days. I'm not Japanese or Chinese, but the oppression they faced back then still resonates, to this day, in the lives of Asian diaspora (and many other POC). I got over it, but it still hurts. We can only work towards a better future, now.

I hate racists. I hate discrimination. I hate sexism. But never have I hated a race. I can understand why some people may be mad at the past but at least as a white male I can't fucking change the past. I didn't dictate what my ancestors did. I literally had no part in any of the things that may trouble your mind today. Everyone recognizes that bad things have happened but there's no perfect race. Everyone makes mistakes. And at least in your case you say you resented white people for a few days, that's just plain ignorant. You may not feel that now but if you do and for anybody who may it's idiotic to hate a whole people because of a few or the past. I guess that's easy for me to say but as humans can we stop dwelling on the past? Let's learn from our mistakes and move on as people, not colors, or religions, or sexual orientations, just people.

What's awkward is when at school, you learn about something that relates to your culture or race (me being Chinese) that other people find funny. My example is when we were learning about how the Chinese worked in rice fields and wore those triangular straw hats. I never saw anything bad about it until people started telling me that I should do that. I felt embarrassed...about my own culture and I never embraced the fact that being a Chinese American is just who I am. Never feel embarrassed about your race or culture or anything. It's who you are and you should embrace it.

It is a privilege to be able to find makeup that fits your skin tone and to be able to pay less than 10$ for it. Men might laugh, but they don't feel the pressures some women feel, especially in the workplace, to look a certain way. If you're a poor woman of colour and can't afford to find proper makeup that suits you, maybe you will get fired from your receptionist or sales job because your lack of makeup makes you look dumpy and unprofessional.
@janikb3538
@janikb3538 3 года назад
asdkotable Bruh tell that to people in third world countries and they’d laugh at you
@turtletail313
@turtletail313 3 года назад
@@asdkotable First of all, plenty of women don't wear makeup. It's not the necessity you're making it out to be. Second of all, are you trying to say makeup shades are a sign of white privilege? Because if so, that has nothing to do with being white and everything to do with simply being in the majority - so majority privilege. Obviously if you live in a place where most people are a certain color, brands are going to cater to that color. It's basic capitalism. Now, though, brands are overcorrecting just to be politically correct. When I lived in a neighborhood which was 90% white the local stores still had equal amounts of makeup in every shade, so the white shades were always sold out and the black shades were always available. So in that case it was actually a disadvantage to be a member of the white majority. Privilege is a tricky concept. Before labelling an entire demographic as privileged, remember that the world isn't as binary as democrats make it out to be.

Joshua Van De Wiel Everyone in first world countries are privileged - period. Women have certain privileges over men but are definitely not overall more privileged. Women are still two times more likely to suffer sexual abuse, and more likely be murdered by their partners, be in abusive relationships, get paid less for doing the same job, get discriminated against when applying for jobs, be shamed for being comfortable with their bodies and sexualities, etc. And this is coming from a man, believe it or not.

cupnoodles201 Prove of the 'pay gap'? Also if women go to the beach in a bikini, nobody blames them, beats them up, degrade them. Or even do anything to them. The same for men. What do you have to say about all the privileges i showed you? There are even more.

cupnoodles201 Did you not see my entire post of statistics showing how privileged women are? Also isnt it logic if a woman picks a less earn job than a man she earns less? Also men and women get the same amount of money for the same job, small differences,picks the women makes can result in a 2-5% less earning ( she decides for herself )

Cute Pumpkin What you fail to understand is that the male you mention who is blond and white, probably was not murdered because of being male, blond and white. You can't say that about ethnic people, women, gays, lesbians, trans, etc. That is why there is fear among those groups of people and you can't fault them for feeling that way.

It makes it harder for your parents to get jobs if they don't speak English or can't speak it well. My girlfriend's family immigrated from Japan, and neither of her parents is fully fluent in English. Her mother was a doctor in Japan, with a really good salary, but here she's working two jobs just to get by, one at a restaurant and idk where the other one is. They had to move back to Japan for a year when she was in fifth grade just so her parents could make enough money to support them for a while longer. Being bilingual is obviously helpful depending on your job, but it can be a serious disadvantage when parents aren't bilingual and can't work well-paying jobs.

I watched this video today, and, possibly because some of the other videos I watched prior to this also dealt with difficult and sensitive topics, I was not able to hold back my tears. It hurts me so immensly to see just how divided society is, and just how unfairly certain people are treated based on and justified by social constructs such as race, gender and religion. It upsets me so deeply, and I am so frustrated, because, as a white woman, people often don't take my concerns seriously, as they feel I have no experience of what im talking about regarding privilege and struggles. This might be true, but that does not mean I care less for those who do struggle and who are being disadvantaged. Thank you for putting this out there, and thank you for making a difference in people's awareness of priveledge. Hopefully there will come a day when I don't cry about this anymore, because it will no longer exist.

Well how does Privilege link with people who worked their asses off to get the things they have? I don't think Privilege is based on the matter of what you possess, but the way that society puts you. For example, you can grow up in a very bad area and you make your way to a better one. So is that a success story or Privilege?

That is a success story, not privilege. You've overcome adversity, which is something a lot of underprivileged folk don't get to do.

Being physically separated from people based on something that they can't help and things that society has built up honestly seems so heartbreaking. it built up barriers that you didn't even realize existed because you were with these people because you chose these relationships and society didn't

A great non-hateful way of addressing the issue. When you talk ably privilege, many tend to get defensive very quick because they feel attacked and being called a bad person for being who they are. But it's not about guilt or hatred - it's not about making the "privileged" people feel bad for who they are. It's about showing the world and knowing that what some take for granted(or are simply unaware of) is not common for all. It's about realising that the people who do not have the same opportunities deserve the same as others and that we should address and work towards a better world for everyone TOGETHER. Can't we all just agree upon giving each other and ourselves a chance?

They kept saying “feel” as if their feeling alone defines privilege. They should try sticking to straight up yes and no and not get into the felt like and stuff.

I'm glad you posted the sources and the questions in the description bar, because I'll definitely go through these myself. This kind of makes me emotional, but it's interesting to visualize it, because at least where I live, we don't really talk much about privileges, we just take things as they come ( which is another sign that we're probably very privileged compared to some others ). I wish we would've done this when I went to school, it definitely would've had an impact on many people.

Being born in America is privileged compared to being born in a Third World country, but as a European I am privileged that I was not born in either the US or a Third World country. If I lived in the US I would not be able to go to university, or afford more expensive medical treatment.

Privilege just boils down to luck. Everything is essentially luck even the fact that the Earth exists is just because it happen to be the right distance from the sun. If you have a problem with this blame the universe and change its physical laws.

+ClumsyRoot Did you choose your parents? No. Did you choose where you grew up? No. Did you choose the school you were sent to? No. Did you choose the kind of people you naturally get along with? No. Did you choose what you were going to be naturally talented at? No. Thus understanding "freewill" as being a mere illusion has nothing to do with work ethic.

This really is eye-opening. Most of us really tend to focus on what we don't have and strive to have everything we want that we forget to see what we already have and be grateful for that and realize that even if we don't have everything, we still are more privileged than most people around the world.

@trevorp8124

The thing that always irked me about the idea of privilege is that the word itself implies these things aren't necessary, and can (and possibly should?) be revoked, which I think is why so many people use it as a means of shaming or dismissing others. Not being judged on your race, having a healthy environment growing up, having a good support net, those aren't *privileges*, they're *rights*. I don't want to *not* have those things so that other people feel better, I want everyone to have them. Everybody step right up and get some so-called "white privilege". It's awesome.

most of these questions were very opinion-based on not on actual problems in everyone's daily lives. asking if someone doesn't feel safe is very different from a person who is not safe. I'm just saying there is a lot of things that could raise or lower your score based on location and income as well. Like for example if you lived near the beach but in a low run down home and could still take a vacation it would raise your score however if you where born in a foreign country like the UK or Canada it would lower your score. I'm just saying don't take this to heart on whether or not you are privileged in life
