What is Propofol and how does it work : Is it a safe drug to use in Anesthesia? 

This stuff is awesome. I have a procedure every 2 years and always book it with this drug and an anesthesiologist. I’m scientifically inquisitive and I find this stuff a ball of fun. It usually knocks me out within seconds and I notice a split second of very blurred vision when it puts me out. Waking up is clear, and I notice slight euphoria the balance of the day. But one component this this video has wrong. You are not asleep, no way, it’s different....... with sleep there is the awareness of time passage. But with this drug, it’s lights out, then you wake up instantly. No awareness of time passage or anything else. Like you died, then woke up. Interesting stuff. I for one honestly love it.

I had this for my colonoscopy. It literally felt like I closed my eyes for 10 seconds and woke up again.

This was injected into my arm via I.V. yesterday when I had oral surgery. I was asleep in less than a minute. It wore off about 10-15 minutes after I got home.

What amazes me is how fast it acts.

I lost my mother 13 years ago due to side effects of propofol... the anesthetist was not experienced to handle the side effects... my mother had convulsions, then she slipped into coma n ultimately she left this world... few years later the same anesthetist again gave propofol to a child during some dental surgery... he too died from same complications

had several surgery's where propofol was used for sedation. Only 'side effect' was feeling sleepy for about 48 hrs. Also very disconcerting when you are awake one second, then 2 - 3 hours go by before you are 'awake' again..

Robin Williams was giving that when he had open heart surgery. He talked about his surgery on The Graham Norton Show about Propofol. Worth a wee watch.

I am on four psych meds. I've had surgery three times in the past 20 years (orthopedic). I've never had problems with anesthesia with the exception of, I believe, interference with my psych meds, specifically clonazepam and Effexor. About 48 hours after surgery I go through a few days of Effexor & benzo withdrawal. All of my doctors say anesthesia doesn't block psych drugs but I disagree.

Had this a couple of months ago when I had my wisdom teeth removed... I just saw it dripping slowly through a tube, and next thing I know, I woke up. Weirdest experience of my life, as I've never been put out. 😮

Propofol ate half of my brain. I felt it rushing through my veins and that was the last thing I remember. The nurse anesthetist woke me up on the way to recovery. I stil think I’m already dead and living in the afterlife

I am having a gastroscopy with propofol sedation on Friday 21st January next week and I am feeling a bit nervous about not waking up from it. My consultant said its a very safe procedure I am having the procedure to find out if I have celiac disease. Has anyone had the same procedure when they were overweight like myself? If so please let me know your experiences I will be interested in knowing and it might put my nerves at ease.

I don't know about the rest of you but I've had a lot of surgeries. I have been put under a lot and there are two things that are a major bummer about the stuff. After you wake up you have like a sore throat for days where they intubated you and I also don't like how fuzzy my memory is poor the first day or so

Like others who have posted, I had Propofol used by an anesthiologist prior to having my gastroenterologust do a colonooscooy. From the time that it was injected until I was unconscious was 10 - 15 seconds maximum. This stuff works fast and you remember nothing when you wake up.

Is this kind of anestesiaok for people with heart actopics?

When I was a baby. 9 months old. I was in a car train accident with my father and I lost both my legs. One to the hip in the other above knee. Im 47 now..Over the years I've had over a hundred operations. Bone revisions skin grafts, stuff like appendix gallbladder. Now I'm going through horrible times in my arms being worn out and I've had like 30 elbow surgeries. I've had several back surgeries due to an arachnoid cyst. I've had a lot of surgery done to this body. My question is is suffer now with pretty bad depression. I have heard that being put to sleep that many times might be adding to my depression and why it's not getting better. Do you have any input on this would it be something you would consider doing a video on maybe? I'm suffering pretty bad with my depression and medications just not helping anymore. My chronic pains off the charts and we know that that into my depression also. I am wanting to understand if all these operations and anesthesia has contributed to my depression being the bad as it is. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm actually getting ready to go through two more operations. I have to have my right shoulder replaced and now I'm sitting all the time in my wheelchair I have developed an abscess and a fistula that must be repaired before in my shoulder. It seems like it never ends sometimes LOL. Anyway please I'm trying to figure this out and I'm running into Roblox everywhere

I thought I was getting Propofol for my gyne surgery. Turned out they added Ketamine and it freaked me out and took me a week to recover. I was so mad!

What IV fluids are and aren't compatible with propofol?

I just had a procedure under Propofol today. It was really smooth, just as I would fall asleep when I'm too tired. No side effects whatsover, I'm really surprised as I expected the worse. The dose was small though, as the procedure lasted 15 mins only

I am scared to use propofol as I never had a surgery and this made more comfortable I only had one for my teeth but it was not propofol but now that I know that if you go under Anastasia that you can asked if they can use something else then propofol

I have a valve in my heart does not open and close the way it should but my heart doctor has released me to get the colonoscopy and the Indoscopy and I understand that they're going to use propofol I'm a little concerned about the propofol to tell you the truth. Heart doctor tells me my heart is very miminal valve problem.

I had surgery 2 weeks ago for a tumor removal ,the last thing I remember was the Doctor said, and I quote him" I an giving the good stuff that Michael J got but I am a better qualified doctor " lights out in 10 seconds. Crazy how fast it knocked my ass out. 👍

Often times some anesthesiologists administer Propofol, Versed (a hypnotic) and Rocuronium Aka. Roc (A paralytic). Not a very good combination considering Versed can cause breathing problems in many patients. It's sad how so many anesthesiologists are so inexperienced with these meds and we pay the price for their incompetency.

Propofol was a patsy. People shouldn’t fear useful drugs because of negative associations. Good video!

For almost every G.A surgery performed here,we use Propofol in the induction of anaesthesia.

I’m studying for Step 1 right now and got a question on Propafol today so I recall that it is lipophilic and goes to highly vasculaturized areas first (lungs, brain, heart) then to less vascularized like fat and bone. I had it and it’s a good drug!

When im having miscarriage this year of the month of april .. i saw the syringe with white liquid inside .. after anesthiologist give a shot of anesticia in my spine part .. a minute later they gave me the same liquid in the video .. due of my curiosity i asked doctors What was that .. they said its a drugs that can make me fall asleep .. after that conversation .. i dont know what happens next .. im been awake in the another room .that can i take a rest .. because of that drug .. i really dont know what procedure they make .. and thank god im alive

I was injured by a bad dr that forced me to have a procedure I didn't sign papers for. Later I found out he wasn't bd certified and the girl in the room did nothing to stop him. The medical bd did nothing to help me and this bad dr still works.

No it isn't! Propofol has No antidote! I had an unsedated colonoscopy with no pain. Propofol can increase your risk of bowel perforation by 26% when sedated for colonoscopies. Shocked that propofol is legal to use for such a minor procedure. Again there is No antidote if you run into problems.
