What is PTO? (and how it could kill you!)

If you're a total tractor "newbie", you'll hear the term PTO or "Power Take Off" used often when talking about tractors. It's one of the most dangerous parts of any farm tractor and something that needs to be respected by the operator. In this video we discuss the different types of PTO and how they work.
The PTO is the spinning shaft on the back of the tractor that attaches to a shaft to power a variety of implements, brush hogs, finish mowers, tillers and most post hole diggers.
PTO's haven't been redesigned since early farm tractors, it's a splined shaft that spins, turning a long driveshaft that leads to a gearbox to make blades spin, tines turn, or augers dig.
Problem is, if you get any part of your body parts, hair or clothing stuck in a spinning PTO, you'll likely be killed in a horrific manner, or maimed for life. Don't want to scare you here, but NEVER get off the tractor and go back near a spinning PTO. EVER!!!!
PTO entanglement one of the reasons why farming is either the most dangerous, or second most dangerous occupation , and especially if you're new to tractors you need to stay way from them with the tractor running. A human can't stop a PTO from turning.
If you're watching this video, you're probably very new to tractors and trying to educate yourself about them because, in the future, you're going to need to have one. My channel is designed for you. Click the links below to learn more and SUBSCRIBE!

Good on you for posting this. TURN OFF THE TRACTOR when messing with the PTO! I've heard so many stories of folks wrapped up in PTO shafts and killed. NEVER EVER EVER work on a PTO shaft with the tractor running. Just turn the damn thing off.

Thanks for the reminder. I run a snow blower on a Massey 383 and stuff gets caught in the blower now and again. Cold, tired and frustrated, it really take some discipline to shut everything down every time. This should be video number one in any series. The possibilities are too horrible to think about. Thanks.

I live in southern Ga. and a few years back a lady was using her bush hog to cut her field and she had to stop to clear some debris from her cutter. Unfortunately she did not stop the PTO and when she bent down the draft from the drive shaft blew her hair into the PTO and it ended up scalping her.

If any of you folks know what lockout/tagout is all about, then use that mindset when it comes to working on your tractor. If you don't know what that's about, look it up, it might just save your life.

Definitely good advice for those new to tractors and a reminder for those of us who may become complacent. Never drop your guard around equipment! Just a side story about live PTO, my neighbor was bush hogging a field that was supposed to be "clean" and he saw something move out of the corner of his eye. Before he could get the PTO shut off about 100 ft of barbed wire got wrapped around his bush hog!

Good advice Mike! My ex father in law got his thumb tore off when a rag he was holding got into the PTO. It's bad stuff, I'm the one that took him to the ER.
@TractorMike

+Tim Pollock I hope everyone reads this. This really illustrated that it doesn't take much to get caught to cause major damage because everything goes around so fast and it won't stop. I've been meaning to go through and cut the strings off every hoodie and coat because if one of those gets caught in the rotation is much, much worse than losing a finger. I can't emphasize too much the danger of that PTO shaft.

Farming and agriculture come in at number 7 in the most dangerous occupation in the US logging is #1 and commercial fishing #2. I appriciate and respect the message though. I come from a logging family and worked at a post mill for awhile. Especially in the mill, lotta things that could get ahold of you and hurt you, never going to win a fight with hydrolics.
@TractorMike
@TractorMike 4 года назад
That's sure possible. As the number of farmers drop and stuff gets more high tech and safer I can sure see that number dropping. When I was in the equipment business, the numbers I always saw was mining #1 or #2 and ag in the other position.

@@TractorMike logging is heading down the same road. My dad was a faller. Got hurt multiple times. Just par for the course. But now a Feller buncher can come in and do twice the work and safer. But it's a dying industry in the US. What actually brought me to this video is that I'm in the process of buying a John Deere 50 and learning how to fix run the PTO on it.

That's something I never understood with farmers and truckers, why don't they ever turn off the engine when not in the vehicle? Is there something about diesel engines where turning it on and off isn't a good idea?

Turn off the tractor and take out the key before some helpful sod starts it for you. Now tractors are fitted with TMR 2019 which turns off the PTO when you leave the seat. Pre 2019 tractors don't have that! Be warned

I’ve had my tractor for 7 years and was never told that the PTO was dangerous. I had ppl help me hook up sprayers and grass cutter. Always when the tractor was off. I have a switch to turn the PTO on. I mostly used the PTO for chemical spraying. Would have been nice to know how dangerous it can be. Glad I know now.

I grew up using big tractors (Kubota M8540, John Deer 6155R) during my time as head groundsman at a greyhound track. I used a Kilworth Roto stone burier to deep Harrow the course, before many hours of tyre packing & watering to reset the course to a safe standard. I always remember being told when I was an apprentice 21yrs ago "If you get caught in the PTO at 540 RPM, it'll pull you in at 12ft per second..and it's good night sweetheart". Scary thought, but instant respect towards horticultural machinery. Great vid anyway 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I’m about 7 years late but augers are also extremely dangerous. I’d wager them to be more dangerous than a pto because it can grab ahold of something much easier.

When I was growing up, tractors did not have cabs, and you entered and exited all tractors from the rear, right next to the PTO. Getting on and off from the front was not an option. We always gave the PTO a wide berth to stay away from it, even when off. Lots of equipment required the PTO to be running while you got in and off the tractor. I knew many farmers that were injured by the PTO.

Not quite a tractor but i had my foot crushed in a pto driven reel mower when the lever lock failed and the pto engaged. Old jacobsen f-133 reel mower. Grass shields on reels had rusted away, lots of engine vibration. Got off the mower to move a yardage marker, and i stepped on the reel frame to get back on and the lever slammed forward turning the reels on, which grabbed my foot, smashing it between the reel and frame. 4 bones broken in multiple places. After my foot healed i bought a pair of steel toed boots and never took them off.

Tractor Mike, What about operating a chipper with the pto running and you are off the tractor? Can you do that if the tractor is in neutral? I have a John Deere 5055E and have just purchased a new chipper. Unfortunately I will be the only one around.
@TractorMike
@TractorMike 3 года назад
Charles, make sure you don't have anything hanging down (clothing/hoodie cords/hair) that can get caught in the chipper. Make sure all shields are in place and you stay as far away as you can from the rotating parts. Keep your cell phone in arms reach at all times. Stay safe...I don't want to lose any viewers that way.

Have you ever done a video about giving people rides on a tractor? A few years back a child was killed when they fell off a tractor they were riding on. His dad was out discing a field, and like many people decided his son should ride along with him on the tractor's fender....for one reason or another the kid fell off the fender and well you can just imagine the outcome of that. I've never thought giving someone a ride or having someone sitting on a tractor that isn't in the operator's seat, or if it has a 2nd seat in a cab equipped tractor was a good idea, ever. Even if the tractor isn't pulling an implement, so many things could go wrong. Maybe a video about this might be a good idea if you've never done one.

@TheMightyKinkle
@TheMightyKinkle 5 лет назад
Electronics and a hydraulic or electric motor
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 года назад
Most I think are either electric or hydraulic. You turn the switch on and it engages a clutch which in turn engages the PTO...at least that's how it was explained to me. Its independent from the transmission so when that PTO is engaged its on regardless, until you shut the tractor off or you turn the PTO switch off. Older tractors when you disengage (press down on the) clutch pedal 1/2 way it disconnected the PTO, not the case on many of today's tractors with hydrostatic transmissions where the PTO is operated separate from the transmission meaning its independent.

That's first good explanation of the way pto's function two stage,live etc. there's guys in the business who can't explain that. If I was ever at a dealer ant the salesman couldn't explain that then I'd be gone in a flash. Great safety information too it really is interesting how we all have bad habits with equipment no matter our experience or knowledge level. It only takes once. I can't stress enough to people to use seat belts and don't tamper with the ROPS. I've seen a D5 CAT go over and the operator was alright just banged up a bit but the seatbelt and ROPS did its job.
