Thank you for this. I understand 1/2 life, but I'm far from understanding how to figure out how old something is, for example, by using carbon dating. Let's say, rounding off, carbon has half-life of 5000 years. The animal has been dead 10000 years. What is done to determine the animal is 10K years old? Another example--measure a rock and it's determined to be 2BB years old. Here's my thinking on why I can't understand the dating process--when measured for a certain radioactive element, how do we know what stage of the radioactive process was already in before the measurement was taken? IOW, I can easily measure half-life if I know what 100% is at the beginning, but what if it's already used up 2.5 times its half-life before measuring?
