Good job on very detailed budget summary.. my husband and I will be retiring in Dumaguete area / Valencia by Dec 14., we are from Canada . Thank you for all the information.
I found Dumaguete to be very affordable when I was there in Feb/Mar. I’m in Ubud, Bali today and have been amazed at how inexpensive everything is. We had dinner at a very nice restaurant last night that was pretty close to the same meal we had in Dumaguete. I think Ubud wins by a good margin but both were ridiculously cheep relative to US prices.
Another great video. When it comes to costs and budgets, it’s so subjective. But you both do such a great job covering how YOU live. I’m looking forward to retirement in the Philippines. Not so I can live on the cheap, but so I can live less expensively than my costs in California, or when I’m in the Philippines on vacation… Salamat
1500 should be OK depends on your lifestyle seen some nice condos in Cebu that was very reasonable but I would advise getting it for just one week in the beginning and test the waters. Good luck.
First time seeing one of your videos. You're great together! Thank you for the clear and useful info! One major expense that I was wondering about is the cost of health insurance. How does that work in the Philippines?
A little bit of splurdge and still a good and affordable amount. I think you mentioned some of the things you added this time you really don't spend on.
The partner one chooses as a travel companion or love interest makes a huge difference in the budget outcomes. The two of you are a great combo because your behaviors and lifestyles are so in synch. The two of you and Gino & Dazel are my favorite overseas couples. All of you keep things real and reject wasteful displays of glitz, glamour, womanizing and partying. That’s why you can get so much enjoyment out of life on a “normal” budget! Well played my friends; well played!😊
So that’s a good yardstick of approx $1500 for a couple who are veteran travellers also bearing in mind that it’s not much more expensive for a couple compared to someone single. So a single westerner who is less experienced in the expat lifestyle would struggle to live on less than $1500 and more realistically would probably be up towards $2000 at least until they get more experience and are able to be more disciplined.
Hi Chang, I was looking and trying to find the place where you and Dan stayed this time while in Dumaguete. Would you please share with me and my wife the contact information. We are making plans to move to the Dumaguete area hopefully in February and from your description the place sounds very ideal. My wife likes to cook and we are budget conscience as well. Is there a specific cottage number that you can share or all of the cottages the same? Many thanks in advance.
I also live in the providence of Cebu, but, the motorbike is very dangerous to ride, so we have a bike but also a car, and car insurance, also you must consider if you get sick or have a accident, it will cost you lots. Plus if you want to eat American food it will cost you much more then the normal grocery store or wet market. End, our monthly expense (not considering medical) is at least $3,500 plus a month.
Hi Guys, I always love your videos. Always respectful and happy couple. Thank you for great info. Where is this cottage? Is this outside and far from silliman university? Thank u in advance
My budget is $3,500 USD. In three years my budget will be unlimited. 20 years working overseas. One hour a day watching the market and managing my portfolio.

@HoboVentures One of my favorite places to eat; veggie-based. I usually order the breakfast order (the one with beans, avocado, eggs, and bread) and/or Veggie-spaghetti. I live in Sibulan, right next to Dumaguete City. Hope you're enjoying your time in Negros Oriental.
Women are expensive - every month ! Some months are just worse than others ? (ha ha) A bit of extra every so often isn't all that much for 2 people really. -- I A single person on that amount would have a jolly good time ! And could also add visa costs & health insurance to the budget maybe ? --- Personally I would be very happy with Joe's place (from Tenn.) for the $133 / mo. apartment you interviewed not long ago in Dumaguete ! He's 'living large' & said he could easily do $900 ''if he wanted" - but did more like $12 - $1500 ? > Alex the Russian is somewhat frugal with a girl friend and lives on a $700 / mo. budget ! = I've been paying attention Dan.
No judgement here.. but 7852 pesos on alcohol?...Holy christ cross thats a high amount.. How does she stay so skinny?.. alcohol really packs on pounds on the belly fat.. Plus just plain unhealthy for you. Even red wine in excess of more than 6 ounces a day is super unhealthy.. When I move to the phillipines, I will be spending roughly one beer a WEEK on the outside restaurant at max...,., so four beers a month and almost zero on wine.. But again thats just Me...EVERY one is different.. Chan should make a video on what she eat per day to stay so skinny, I want to follow same diet, except for the nasty alcohol part of course.
