What is Reformed Theology? | ask THEOCAST

Is reformed theology just another word for Calvinism? No! Reformed Theology is much more than the doctrine of salvation and the five Solas. Reformed Theology was birthed out of the reformation to clarify the gospel and define faith alone in Christ alone. This theological system, when properly understood, will lead Christians to find rest in Christ outside of their works and in the finished work of Christ.

So I'm a Jewish believer in Jesus as our Messiah. Never heard of Calvinism, Reform, etc. All I know is that the Word says that whosoever believes in Jesus/Yeshua shall be saved. Unfortunately all this other stuff has been creeping up in conversations and I'm left standing there clueless with what this all means and why so many argue and are divided over it and why is even important. I want to learn but don't know if my brain will ever wrap itself around it. I just want to be in the Lamb's Book of Life. Will it matter if we are reform? Calvinist? And other stuff? Serious question here. I'll love to read anyone else's point of view.

Hi Chikita, You are riight. For your name to be in the book of Life, you need not know what is Reformed or Calvinist but You need to know what you believe is scriptural or not. If you believe that you are a born sinner and repent of your sins and realize you need God's forgiveness, No merit of yours can take away your sins. and believing salvation belongs to the lord and if you confess, Jesus Christ is your Lord and savior then you are saved. And you will become a child of God. and you will Love God and His word, the Bible. if you love the Bible you will desire to meditate on it. then you will come across these terms. Reformed, and so on...

Hello there Brother! I personally don’t hold to Calvinist or Reformed beliefs, but I’m trying to learn about it. All you need to understand is that we are born sinners who are deserving of shell, yet we are saved by Jesus the messiah, who is the Son of God and who is God. Don’t become discouraged by these different views and labels, most of us would still hold hands as brothers and sisters, I’ll pray that god can bring wisdom and discernment to your heart! not totally sure but it sounds like he says we don't have to do anything other than have faith in Jesus. Jesus brought us here and He will take us to the next level if we believe. it's not what i understand. He tells us obedience isn't correct?? i think that's what he said but i'm not totally sure. I believe in Romans Paul talks about us being obedient so this isn't works for salvation as we are saved already but it is addressing our lives in continued sin, you should read it because it's really good.

@@MrYourup1 We should, in fact, be obedient. But OUR obedience will alwaysalwaysalways fall short. But Jesus' obedience, His PERFECT obedience, is what is credited to US. It's what Christ has DONE that gets one into heaven. It should also be noted that, once we are regenerated, we WANT to obey God more and more. Our desire is to not grieve Him. It's what Paul Washer says about we love the things we used to hate and now hate the things we used to love. Obedience just...happens with a truly regenerated, born again believer.

@@crucifiedwithChrist_G220 No where does the Bible say "by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone." In fact, most people who paraphrase Ephesians 2:9 make the same mistake as you by assuming the phrase "it is the gift of God" modifies the word _saved_ when in reality it modifies the word _grace._ Paul is saying that _GRACE is not of works,_ meaning God gives us the means of salvation regardless of past actions, but he does not say salvation is by faith apart from obedience to the words of Jesus. Notice that the word _saved_ here is used as an adverb and not a noun, thus it cannot be the subject being modified by the phrase _not of works._ Proof of this is the words of Jesus in John 6:29: "This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom the Father hath sent." (John 6:29) According to Jesus, even believing is a work, therefore repentance is a work, prayer is a work, baptism is a work, literally everything we do in faith toward God is a work. There are no exceptions. Jesus also said, _Why do you call me Lord but do not do the _*_THINGS_*_ that I say?_ And, _Not all who say to me Lord, Lord will enter into the kingdom of heaven, but they who do the will of my Father who is in heaven._ So, yes, grace is free and it is not of works, yet few will be saved because they fail to obey the words of Jesus as he requires. "He that says he knows him, but does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." (1 John 2:4) "To whom much is given much is required." (Luke 12:48)

@@landonbudke7266 Then in your opinion God doesn’t love everyone if He chooses who to send out His Word to and who He doesn’t. He sends out His word and loves us enough to freely give us the choice whether to believe in Jesus Christ or not. Jesus tells us to love everyone, but not even the “god” of Calvinism is that loving if he doesn’t give people the chance to know Him. How can the “god” of Calvinism hold people responsible for not believing in Jesus Christ if he doesn’t even allow them to have the chance to? He calls us all and God’s will is for everyone to be saved - we are all lost and Jesus came to save the lost - all of us. God ultimately knows who will turn to Him or not and He is the only one who can give us salvation. But the “god” of Calvinism is not the same as the Living God. Calvinism is based on Lordship salvation, saved by “works.” How much do you have to sin to know you’re not saved? Calvinism never allows you to be assured you’re saved. Whereas the Living God wants us to be assured by our faith in Jesus Christ which is by His grace. His will is for all of us to answer the call and turn to Him. Calvinism twists scripture just like Satan does and Calvinists would rather say they’re Calvinists than Christians. “Doctrines of Grace” is not biblical just bc you twist certain scriptures to fit man’s theology - if that’s the case then all of Satan’s uses of scripture were biblical. God loves ALL, but we have to draw close to Him and then God will draw close to us. It’s like a man selling food at a stand. Anyone who comes up to the stand to buy food he will offer food. But we must come up to the stand if we are in need of food. North side Bible Baptist church and Yankee Arnold speak out against Calvinism. The gospel is very easy to understand that God sent Jesus to save those who are lost by His sacrifice on the cross as long as we are willing to believe in Jesus - which is God’s will for us. Calvinism believes you’re regenerated and given the Holy Spirit before believing in Jesus Christ - not biblical at all. Jesus said one has to be born again by the Spirit and that is by believing in Him - any who believe in Him, not just the “elect.” Calvinists “god” wants us to be compassionate toward all people but isn’t even compassionate toward all people himself. It’s a false gospel.

Pretty cool video man Common people get tripped up in the terminology of any theological perspective and say things like “why does it have to be so complicating” but if they would take the time to study they would see that it is just a way to point to a particular part in scripture that points to Christ or the gospel and the terms help for memory recall for example “Calvinism” or “tulip” someone might ask “what in the world is that?” And then they are off on the adventure of searching the scriptures… reformed/Calvinistic seems to point to the glory of God and the gospel which was the sticking point for me… Roman’s 9:11 is quite a verse but consider the context ;)

One point without which Reform theology cannot happen is theocentric understanding of the purposes for any of it. The hardest doctrine for me was the eternal decrees of God as opposed to a neo-Arminian universalism of the hippy dippy Jesus Movement. Contributing to the contemporary Redefining of historical theological terms and systems to be more inclusive? Particular Baptists and the 1689 LBC was Not even hinted at as “Reformed” until after the 1970s and was not considered Reformed Theology nor would have been by the Reformers, nor the Divines, and not even the Particular Baptists themselves. That is a very contemporary divergence with ahistorical definitions. This should be clear in how the Reformed Confessions address those who reject biblical infant baptism. It is interesting how Baptists like to refer to baptism as "Secondary Loci," as Matthew Barrett (whom I have respect for) refers to it, or Dr. R. Albert Mohler in his "Theological Triage." The problem is that the Reformers, the historically confessional Reformed, and the Reformed Confessions Did Not view baptism as "secondary loci" but as an integral mark of the true Church in it's "pure administration." Everyone seems to also not understand that many individuals define the 5 points by their summation within the acronym TULIP thinking that’s the full understanding of the doctrinal points rather than as they're defined in their confessional source the Canons of Dordt. Ex. Unconditional Election according to the Canons of Dordt First Head, Article 17 includes the presumptive election of covenant children. If one does not hold to this position, which Baptists don’t, then they Don’t hold to Unconditional Election as Confessionally defined and are Not a true 5 point Calvinist. As a Historical Theology major I see no benefit to such anachronism. Individuals who haven't done their research seem to attempt to portray the relationship between the Reformed and Particular Baptists as more congenial than it was in the 16th and 17th century. Dr. R. Scott Clark states it well: "Are the Particular Baptists “in the reformed tradition”? No. The consequence of redefining Reformed to admit the Baptists is that we must give up our reading of redemptive history (e.g., the continuity of the covenant of grace), our way of reading Scripture (i.e., our hermeneutic), our understanding of the nature of the covenant of grace, our view of the visible church, the internal/external distinction, our understanding the sacraments, our understanding of the promises God has made to believers and their children, the nature of the visible church, and, as we will see, our eschatology in favor of an over-realized eschatology that permeates the Baptist vision."

@@dannywilliamson3340 Likewise, Leon Morris explains it is used “in the LXX of the choosing of Israel in Deut 26:18.”4 This is significant because, as we saw in earlier chapters, Israel’s election was not an individual election to eternal life. Hence, Paul’s word choice in 2 Thess 2:13 already points away from the traditional predestinarian interpretation. But let’s not jump to conclusions before looking at the context.

Can I encourage you for a minute? Remember it says Trust in The Lord with ALL your heart and do not lean on your OWN understanding in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your past straight. Something I have had to really be disciplined in is 1. When I start feeling overwhelmed frustrated confused or burdened by what I am watching online I take a break from it. 2. God loves you He created you and He has a purpose for you! 3. Find a trusted family member or friend who knows Jesus and can do bible study with you /encourage you in your walk. 4. All you need to know and understand is that Jesus is the Way The Truth and The life not you not your actions not RU-vid. 5. Focus on Jesus alone and pray and ask Him to speak to you through His Word and help you understand He will not abandon you in your thoughts/feelings. He truly cares for you and loves you so much. 6. When you wake up go to Him first pray seek Him in The Word and commit to trusting Him as he sanctified you and guides you through life. I have had my fair share of panic attacks, questioning my salvation, and straight up frustration to realize Jesus will do as He promised for you and He will never leave you alone. He knows you want to seek the truth and be obedient and He is always looking at your heart ready to discipline you and correct you as a good Holy amazing Father would ♥️

Unless you aren't a Christian, why would you want to jump to proof without understanding the system first? After all, Christians are to not bear false witness, so one ought to have an understanding of what the theology actually is before jumping into proving or disproving it. Sadly, a lot of "Christians" don't love Jesus enough to obey his commandments and would gladly slander any belief system that disagrees with their own.

How can a loving God hold people accountable who He never gave the chance to get to know Him in the first place? Please go watch those sermons 💗 I say this bc I care about you and others and want people to know the true Word of God. As R C Sproul says everyone’s a theologian the question is how good of a theologian are you? Yes, you do need not go deep in theology to be saved, but there are intellectuals who enjoy this and thank goodness because theologians have kept the church on track for centuries. Were it not for Martin Luther John Huss John Calvin John Knox George Whitfield and others…we would be going in the wrong direction. Many who profess Jesus, cannot articulate their faith when confronted by an unbeliever. Theology helps one engage with people questioning their soul. If we love, Christ, then we will love his word, and we will seek a deeper relationship with him through his word.

🤔However did THE CHURCH make it the first 1500 years before those glorious reformers? While many of those men did some good things. In no way did they keep the church on track. Reform theology has a big problem with man worship.
@naterios33
@naterios33 4 месяца назад
Actually in church history, theology was born out of necessity because of the heresies the early church fathers had to deal with. All while dealing with Roman persecution and martyrdom and not having a complete canon. Those men did their best to articulate the Trinity, and the Christian faith through God's sovereignty and providence. So, the original post was accurate theology has always helped and kept the Church afloat and on track.

The 5 points of Calvinism came quite a distance in time from John Calvin. It was not his his invention to explain God's saving grace. Yes he taught Predestination and God's electing grace in Christ. So did Jesus. So did St. Augustine Calvin quotes numerous times. So did St. Paul. So did Yahweh in OT to Jews as to how they became his people. He chose to have mercy on them. The 5 points of Calvin came into being at the Synod of Dort in Holland to which representatives from Reformed bodies from over Europe attended. From Church of England, Scots Presbyterians, French Reformed (Huguenots) and etc. It involved a basic issue of salvation creating controversy in Protestant faith. Are we saved solely by grace or is saving faith a matter of human faith choice? The Reformed faith decided by grace alone. Both grace and saving faith are a gift of God, not our own doing or choice, i.e..free will. The Holy Spirit creates faith in our heart of hearts as the Gospel of Christ is proclaimed to us in whatever way. The words free will, I believe, appear twice in original languages of Bible. Both a reference to a free will offering over and above the tithe in Hebrew OT law. As to Reformed Baptists many covenantal Reformed Pastors love Charles Spurgeon, an English Baptist. He preached the 5 points of Calvinism better then most of us. He didn't follow the covenant of grace most Reformed bodies do where we with our children are included in that covenant with Abraham, continued on Pentecost Day and reflected in household baptisms in NT, that even included slaves, where we only know of head of household confessing Christ as Lord, including a woman head of household, Lydia! Unheard of in OT rites requiring a male stand in. As to baptism sprinkling is preferred as the blood of the covenant is always sprinkled in the Bible as it symbolizes the blood of Christ which alone atones for sin before God, not water. In my Reformed Church in America we baptize anyway a convert or parent requests. Most are sprinkled or placing sign of the cross on forehead with water. But I have poured and immersed. Make the right choice for you the first time as we will not do it a second time and violate the 7 points of Christian unity in NT. How can you ever improve on the name of the Holy Trinity? We accept all Christian Baptisms done in name of the Trinity and have agreement with Catholic Church to respect each other's baptisms. Since the water of baptism symbolizes the blood of Christ the amount of water is meaningless to us. Just so its water.
