What is Shadows Awakening - aRPG Focused on Story, Not Loot

Today we're going to take a look at an upcoming aRPG set to release at the end of this month for PC and the first week of September for consoles. Shadows Awakening.. a kind of do-over of an aRPG released a few years ago Shadows Heretic Kingdoms.. this takes everything that was supposed to come from a promised series of games and packs it into one game.
As for the gameplay found in Shadows Awakening.. you can expect a slower, more story based and tactical style game than what you may be used to in typical hack and slash isometric action RPGs. That isn't to say that Shadows Awakening gameplay is boring it just is less over the top and doesn't have you taking on hordes and hordes of enemies at a time with single button presses.
While probably not going to win game of the year - more RPGs that aren't garbage are always welcome to me.
** note ** if you had bought Shadows Heretic Kingdoms years ago you will have the beta for this title in your steam library.

I played it for 4-5 hours from its first release, it had some really interesting ideas about puzzle and situation solving but when the story and talking to npcs came it was awful and some hub areas were terribly confusingly designed.

This is actually one of my most anticipated games. Heretic Kingdoms was a lot of fun, even unfinished. I'm glad you liked the game, it will be a day one purchase for me.

Is it "point and click to attack and character will repeatedly perform basic attack until target died unless player press different input/skill" like old-school mmo or "hack and slash with ability cooldown" like Viking Wolves of Midgard?

Great video man. I'm new to these top down isometric RPGs but I love this game. I can't tell you how it compares to a Diablo III but I know for my personal taste the fact it focuses on the story really captured me in knowing the ins and outs of these kind of RPG games.

+Yu Iko Divinity is a great game, but it is most definitely not a ARPG. It is a tactical turn based RPG. HUGE difference.

looks cool! I think this game does have its place but im not sure how many people will actually go for this, maybe this will sell better on console than on PC. That slow gameplay will kill me. I love d3 and POE where you can run... FAST....

3 abilities, character swapping. Not for me. It would be so much better if you could go with multiple characters at the same time like in Dungeon Siege.

Can someone please enlighten me on how the f@ck to dual wield?? which character to choose for 1h melee? ..i can't find any info in the entire internet :{

Zarr (the Lycan) and Shadowhand (Skeletor) are the only chars who can dualwield weapons. Carissa (best Char Ingame imo) is 1h melee with shield. The 3 main Chars are Staff (mage), 2h (warrior) and bow (hunter).

I've heard about the first game and considered buying it but everywhere I was reading that it wasn't finished and had problems and didn't go anywhere so I held off, I see that it was in fact never meant to finish. I'll see aobut this one but let's hope you don't have to play the first one, or I'll play the first one when it's at a huge discount price.

You dont have to play the first one. This second one is basically the first one + some more. But again, its a terrible game, even probably worst than the first one. Dont consider buying it, seriously. Its an advise.

Divinity is also great example of amazing singleplayer/co-op experience with great story and fully narrated. It's just not action rpg because of turn-based combat i guess?

A lot of the comments here don't seem to understand what kind of game this is trying to be. Just because it's isometric doesn't mean that it's Diablo/PoE, and that is even said in the video. Nevertheless thanks for the video, will definitely picking this up looks like a nice adventure /RPG game

Did you play Return To Arms? You could even import your character from the 1st Champions title. Drives me insane there is no Champions title on the PS3/4.

I did, since it was released shortly after main game I always viewed it as more of an expansion, similar to what lords of destruction was for D2. But yea, CoN is definitely a hidden gem, sad thing is will probably never seen a port or reboot.

Vikings Wolves of Midgard gives a similar feel to CoN. They fixed the game a lot since release so don't pay heed to the shitty reviews. It's actually a really fun co-op hack and slash.

While I appreciate a good story with an ending, I wish there was some type of endgame, like repopulating the maps to replay them with an endgame leveling system to give me a reason to keep playing, once you beat it there's really no reason to keep playing, I could really care less about the trophies. Great game just lacks deph

What I'm worry is that they release this game for console as well and this translate as a simple kid friendly game that don't add all that advance skill/build complexity of the old PC RPG games. Not their fault but you tag the game as low skill and easy to play if you export something to console with their limited jostick controls.

Gotta be honest, the whole shadow realm thing is kinda unique and I could deal, but the character swapping is almost a deal breaker, especially being able to use their abilities on top of another, take this out and it would be fantastic. Unless of course the characters are so bland by themselves that its almost a must have for character swapping. Hmmm

Looks great. Slow combat looks nice. Tired of the button smashing 1000 animation a second effect all over, combat. This actually feels like it can kill you.

I felt kind of the same when i played my first JRPG that wasn't turn-based. Slow gameplay on an ARPG might seem unnatural, out of place or even boring. But it has it's pros, like for example, not being be insta-killed all that often for being a bit too reckless. A slower "time to kill" means that you have more seconds to study how the fight is going, which helps you to adapt against a tough enemy. Maybe i'm just too open minded about it.

@@AzzRushman Even so, I don't know what difficulty fevir was playing on here but it looks like the enemies attack every.. 5-7 seconds or so with extremely slow attacks/projectiles and hardly do any damage. This dame definately isnt for me, but I can appreciate if someone likes playing for story.

This looks like it'd be a better fit for a turn-based game, a la Divinity, than an ARPG. From the gameplay shown, it looks very slow and rigid .

it all depends on whether someone is into the swapping mechanic, I'd personally MUCH rather have one character that has, say, 10 different skills, so I guess I will give it a pass
