What is Silberra 100? ... the color film stock you don't know about

Silberra 100 is here to save the day! Given what seems like a shortage of color film, it's great to see Silberra making 35mm and 120 color film. Everyone keeps asking me what my thoughts are -- i finally shot some of this film and have some thoughts about how the images look.

Thank you for giving us a look at this film. Even though pricey, makes me happy seeing more companies making film. I just saw 1 roll of Fuji 400 at my rite aid for $19.99, the 3 pack was $41. Just one more reason to develop at home.

Love these shots! And thank you for using the film in normal conditions; the last RU-vidr I watched that reviewed the film decided to take it to a California salt flat during what looked like the middle of Summer, ignoring Silberra's advice to load the film in subdued light, edited them to a point where it looked like he was making a cross between Portra and Pro Image (showing the original scan vs his edit), and had the nerve to say it looked "washed out" (his edits looked more washed than the untouched scan).

@@ribsy It is unlikely that you will read this, but I will write it anyway. A terrible truth has recently been revealed to me:) The line of Silberra Color films is just a Kodak aerocolor of varying degrees of freshness. And their line of black and white films is the Russian technical film Tasma. No one can be trusted in this world…😕

Very interesting video! I am wondering if it was challenging to print from the clear film base of the Silberra. As far as I know, color paper is conditioned for the orange-yellowish film base of color negative film. Was there any green or blue tint on your prints that you had to balance?

With that clear base on the 35 mm, I'm surprised you can get correctly balanced prints on RA-4. I had understood the orange mask was necessary to offset crossovers that would otherwise be inherent in C-41 dyes (I might have gotten that wrong, though). Makes me wonder if that wasn't originally a reversal film, or an aerographic emulsion. Sure looks better in the print than what I'm used to see with cross-process E-6, though. I'd be very curious to know whether Silberra is actually coating new film -- I'd understood that only Kodak, Fuji, and Innoviscoat (who produce some or all Lomography color films) had operating color coating lines. Time to head off to my forums and start an argument by asking... ;) And the price doesn't look terrible; it's only about 50% more than Kodak professional stocks, and I haven't seen any new 120 color from Fuji recently.

I’ve been away from photography for maybe 7 years due to blindness in one eye and severe vision loss in the other. Fortunately some recent surgeries have recovered much in my good eye so I think I might be able to come back to it. Anyway… I think it was Rollei that was selling a very similar film about that far back. It had a reputation of having a yellow cast and the clear base. It could be processed either for prints or transparencies. I never had the chance to try it but I have a strong suspicion this is the same stuff. I don’t remember the name but “Crossbird” comes to mind. The rumors at the time were that it was from deep frozen pancakes of an aerial surveillance film, which explained the yellow cast because of the overly blue lighting from very high altitudes. I could be way off but I’m leaning toward the belief that this is the same stuff, originally from AGFA. Perhaps the equipment and formulas were scooped up and moved to Russia, or maybe it’s just more packaging of old stock… I wonder if anyone knows.

I live in Russia, in Moscow, and I work at the Vintage Camera shop, where we also sell film. And in general, silberra color is kodak aerial film. This film is just a repackaged Kodak Aerocolor IV or 2460. In total they have 3 films: 50, 100, 160 ISO. But in fact, this is the same Aerocolor 125 ISO. The film itself has good dynamic range and can be exposed with some tolerance. Therefore, I am 99% sure that this is a marketing move by the manufacturer to create the appearance of a wide range. Also, Silberra does not produce its own films at all, but only repacks films from other manufacturers.

There must be more to this story. It makes no sense that Silberra would make and sell color negative film in 50, 100 and 160.ISO at the same time. I've no insight, but there it is. A second question concerns the lack of a color mask (the orange thing). The use of such mask is not a novelty. It is required to match the color dyes in the negative to the color couplers (dyes) in the RA-4 color printing paper. Without the mask, a certain amount of color cross-over is going to occur, making a clean, accurate color print difficult at best. Agfa used to make color negative film without a mask, but they dropped that process (their own proprietary process) abut 60 years ago. Kodak makes a color negative film without a mask, Aerocolor 125, but that is a specialty film used in aerial photography were exact color isn't a priority. So what's the Siberra story???
