I often talk about slip in my videos without giving any explanation of what it is. Here I will explain what slip is, how it is applied and why it is used on pottery. If you have pottery Q & A questions please leave them in the comments so I can make a video of the answers, thanks.

Andy, excellent video. I read in the book, "Papago Indian Pottery," page 66, that the most-common slip used in Papago Indian pottery was red slip (hematite), which was mostly reserved for water jugs (ollas) and storage vessels. The lesser-used slip among them was white slip, and used primarily on vessels made from white clay. The Papago Indians applied the slip with a cloth, instead of a brush. Before and after applying the slip, the pot was always burnished with a stone.

Great video! I also have a question: are there any specific lessons I can learn from looking at my misfired pots? If it cracked in a ceretain way it wasn't dry enough or it needed more temper etc. Thanks

OK I have a question I have a lot of bags of slip that I used to use to make mold or pottery animals, but can I use it to wedge into Clay to dry it out like I would powder Clay

Would you add coloured glaze on top of coloured slip and then fire it; or is it more of a common practice to add coloured slips, and then glaze it with a clear glaze instead to show the slip colours at the final product? Thanks!

Hello Andy! Thank you for this video. I was wondering if you can apply a slip on a pot which has nearly or entirely dried out. I made a nice burnished jug a week ago and just now I'm making the slip that I want to test on it if it's not too late.
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
You can slip dry pottery, just be careful not to get it too wet otherwise the clay will start to expand and the pot will crack. One thin coat of slip then wait a half hour before applying another coat.

Hi Andy! My question is similar to the one below, that is, can a pot that cracks during air drying be saved? Can you pack it with slip or clay to fill the crack? Does it have to be scrapped? Thanks and happy 4th of July!

That's going to be a toughie but I will give it some thought and effort. thanks

So can you add minerals or other materials to a slip base to get colors? Or is this just a natural sourced clay(like the yellow and white) that you find around where you live?
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
These are just naturally colorful clays but you can add minerals to emend the colors some, have have done that a few times in the past.

I dig my own clay from nature. But as far as store bought slip, I have had good results with the New Mexico Clay Terra Sigillata Ball Clay OM4

Andy, is there a way i can seal a small crack in a pit so that i can still use it over a fire? for example: does glazing the pot fill in that crack?

How to fix a crack, that’s a good video question too. Now I need to crack a pot so I can demonstrate, dang it.

@@sandgrains3418 thank you for the idea. my original question is in regards to a crack that forms during the firing. it was crackless when it was green, but a crack formed when it was hot. i was asking if there is a way to repair that crack to make it sealed again

I have a question if slip is clay mixed with water until liquid how do you get colored slip like blue or any non organic colors ?
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 3 года назад
All my slips are just different colors of clay, red, yellow, white. I don’t have any blue slip, there are some blue and green clays but they don’t fire to that color.

Wow, what kind of clay is naturally yellow? What would I ask for when I go to a clay store? Do you know of any clays that are purple-lavender-blue or would I need to use acrylic paint? Does acrylic paint cheapen the final product in your opinion?
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
This stuff is really unique. I think if I was trying to find it commercially I would buy some yellow ochre amzn.to/3yGbkco and mix it with about 30% red clay, that would give you close to the same effect. Blues and greens are impossible to get using natural products, purples are sometimes possible ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sCDY9ocrqzg.html
