Once the Rhizosphere is healthy and an organic cap has formed over the surface a decay layer opposite the cap starts to form ~1 meter deep. That decay layer is inert long term carbon storage and is made up of the fully decayed bodies of soil microbes. It's not that difficult to develop this layer as long as the layers above it are continuously active and not disturbed. Stable organic material is the final result of a complete terrestrial ecosystem. 3 years creates the cap, 10 years of continuous waste processing results in a new complete ecosystem that acts as a semi permanent storage vessel for carbon.
