This was very helpful. Thank you! I am going to see if you have done any videos more recently about this topic (because now in 2024 the MLC exists, for example...)

Hey this was great, and I really liked there presentation format - very informative and clear. Great job contextualizing what Songtrust is, and isn't. Thanks so much!
I texted a question but I know you get a lot of text so I'll ask here. Is it possible to utilize song trust, only to collect from countries that we can't accesse on our own???
Best vid on RU-vid description of song song trust!!! The only question I have is if I have a PRO and im registered with soundexchange also do I even need a publisher? I'm just a artist trying to do do good music haha
The p.r.o. pretty much is your publisher. You would not need Songtrust. All you need now is a distributor to get your music to spotify, apple music, etc.
@@Eighty5iveProd That's cool, i believe rappers are better off using free platforms at first then adding them pay platforms later once you've built an audience. No reason to pay all them fees when you're in the early stages. As long as a rapper has yt, soundcloud, and bmi(all free), then the seed is planted.
@@nathanielbenford7928 I disagree with this too. I really wish I understood all this in the very beginning. The people I needed the most encouragement from when I started out didn’t believe in this at all and most of that is due to the mystery of how making money in this industry even works. If I would’ve told my family that I’m registered to collect international, social media, and master mechanical streaming and performance royalties everytime that a song is played by anyone anywhere or performed in the right places it would’ve shut down most of their doubt and at least brought the next set of questions which is how you gonna do it? Instead I got no you can’t be a rockstar when you have kids and your dreams go away. They had no idea how this works and neither did I. Then I went to a trash music school online and worked three jobs which was a bust too. It’s important for this to all make sense before you start just like any other job.
I’m sorry to answer your question man signing up with songrust eliminates a publisher/label for the time being. And it’s good for you. In the future a physical publisher may offer you money in advance to make an album in that scenario they will take over the song trusts responsibilities and I’m sure they will want to take over others as well but only for that particular albums business side.
Thanks for the video. You showed a list of countries there where Songtrust works, if my country isn't on that list does that mean i can't join Songtrust? (I'm from Indonesia). Thanks again.
I enjoyed the video on Songtrust.I have a question in reference to the LLC.I know how important it is,but I had seen a video where it was mentioned about timing when applying for the LLC.It was referencing that you should be be making more money than you have expenses to avoid what you are doing musically so that it doesn’t turn into an expensive hobby and fall victim of losing your LLC.What are your thoughts that you can share and how to avoid that cause most Independents are not making a lot money starting out,but the LLC is very important.Thank you for your response.
Thank you for this video. Do you know if Songtrust help to enforce the terms of a lease contract ? If an artists rips a version of my beat off of RU-vid and uploads it to Spotify, does Song trust help me find and collect from their streams ?
I know this video is old, but I'm wondering if you already have accounts with Harry Fox, MLC, etc. paying you directly, does SongTrust take over those administrations, or only what you don't already claim?
This is great. Please clarify me on this because this music business is very confusing. From my research, Songtrust and Sentric music does the something and i am confused on the one to use. Secondly do you mean i don't need Tunecore again if i register with Songtrust?
who would do the distribution do I still have to use CD Baby to distribute the music and let songtrust collect the royalties? And who would do the synchronization contacts?
Can you explain why working with a distributor such as cdbaby for publishing is a nightmare? Do they collect in the same countries as songtrust? we need to know.
CD Baby farms out their publishing administration to Songtrust. It may be a better decision to set up a separate account directly with Songtrust instead of using CD Baby Pro for example.
Thanks so much for this helpful video! For those of us who are not experts in the copyright process would it be possible to provide a simple flowchart of what to do after we write an original musical composition? Let's say I have a MIDI file, audio recording, or written score of the composition. What are the steps I should take to claim ownership of the composition, copyright protect it, and receive royalties for performance and reproduction? Thanks again!
Hey, thank you for posting such a very informative video. This helped out a lot You mentioned that Songtrust receives a portion of the publishers share. So does that mean if BMI is collecting royalties and collecting their share of percentage from that. Will Songtrust collect from the publishers share as you mentioned? So from that percentage that BMI is obtaining for me, Will that be the share that they are taken from? Also, I'm just so paranoid about this whole process since it is completely new to me. You explained that soundtrust is only assisting with collecting royalty revenue. They will not own any sort of Rights to my masters / music once I register with them correct? Do you know if this is the same for BMI?? Thanks again dude. I hit the follow button. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of your videos. Cheers
Songtrust collects mechanical royalties only - which are only paid to publishers. If you don't have a publishing company set up, then ST takes 15% and passes the rest on to you (assuming you are the sole writer).
GOOD STUFF! Ayyyyy! Question in reference to copyright explained: I copyrighted my works via SR form and not PA, does that affect my getting performing arts royalties via BMI, ASCAP etc? Basically, do I need to have my "Works of the Performing Arts" copyrighted to collect from the PROs?
@@MusicMoneyMakeover Thanks for replying mannn you're AWSOME! BUT, What's confusing to me is, I was told An Artist can apply for both Form PA & Form SR with one copyright application If you are registering BOTH the musical work AND the recorded performance of that work, select “Sound Recording”. This is what I did and it gave me that option as I was feeling out the form. What are your thoughts on that?
Hello, I am wanting to do another copyright to be safe with my album. I know my last copyright was filed under Performing Arts or whatever. Should I do "Sound Recordings Published on the Same Album" or "Musical Works Published on the Same Album" or both? Thank you for any information you can provide :)
If an artist is their own default publisher, do they enter their own name like "John Tits" as publisher, or their act name like the "Sweater Puppets" or just make up some random shit up for their publisher title like "Digital Titties publishing"? Seems like every indie artist on earth "own" their own production co...
Once again, I appreciate you Casey for the valuable information you bring to young music entrepreneurs. My question is: As an independent artist, who handles both Publishing administration and collection for themselves, would you suggest I sign up for SongTrust so they can help me collect in the "Sweet Spot" countries you mentioned? (Allowing them to collect 15% only in those territories and I keep 100% by still doing my own admin on BMI/ASCAP, the MLC, HFA)
Very well said! Thanks for sharing this information, I just have one point of confusion. If I’ve already claimed publishing on BMI, say a 50/50 split with another artist on the song, do I still register the song for publishing by songtrust?
Hello , Please inform should an artist first register themselves with SONG TRUST and then register themselves with a Distributor or it should be the other way round . Kindly explain and why ? It's kindda confusing
Thanks for the video! Are you based out of Chattanooga? I'm an independent artist who is about to be making my way back to Chattanooga this summer. Also, do you ever do mentor calls?
Yes distrokid only collects mechanical royalties on the master recording. BMI only collects royalties for shows you’ve performed. Song trust is collecting your mechanical royalties from listeners over seas and outside of America. You need all three and more. You have music on tik tok and social media that I haven’t mentioned yet either.
@@JAPANESEJENN I've always known that Songwriters can join BMI for free,. Individual publishers must pay $150. Publishing companies must pay $250. Did this change Jenn?
Very helpful video as always. I'm curious, should I register myself on BMI prior Songtrust? Will it keep my revenue on BMI without Songtrust 15% off? I will be very thankful for your answer.
@@MusicMoneyMakeover thank you for yr reply 🙏🙏🙏 but what is a point to waste time registering on BMI if Songtrust is automatically will register you everywhere. Or not?
@@maxborosiuk3570 based on experience, I recommend signing up with your PRO of choice, submitting your songs yourself and THEN for those songs released, once on Spotify, etc., update your Songtrust catalog. Don't assume Songtrust will register your songs with your PRO, or that they will do so correctly. @musicmoneymakeover reiterates this and I second this. You are responsible for checking and monitoring your data to ensure accuracy.
i only have 176,000 plays on spotify but only a 3 songs that have over 20-30k streams.. is it even worth the time of registering my works right now? so far i have been collecting minor payments from my distributor. at what point do i need to make sure im signed up for BMI, song trust, and sound exchange?
I'm an independent artist, i already registered my songs with bmi and i have distributed all my songs through distrokid. do i still need to register with song trust ... lf i do, will i get royalties from them differently (will I be paid by bmi and songtrust)
I'm suspicious that Songtrust collects mechanicals from physical album sales...dealing with issues for one of my clients who co-wrote 10 songs on a label release...ST not giving much support on this...not impressed so far.
I drive trucks Casey I would luv to me you in person I located in Memphis been saving money and learning slowly because learning how the business actually work by listening in my blowing but do able over time
