What is Sports Analytics Really?

In this video, I talk about the different types of work that a sports analytics professional may do. Moneyball shaped what is traditionally thought of as sports analytics; however, there are many other types of sports analytics aside from helping teams win.
Type 1: Moneyball - In this role your main goal is to help teams win. You will either help coaches make decisions, players improve performance, or work with your organization to optimize draft picks and trades.
Type 2: DFS & Sports gambling - These careers are primarily focused on predicting the outcome of games. You can work for a sports book, a company recommending picks, or in a portfolio gambling with your own money.
Type 3: Media - Your focus here will be on story telling. Sports analytics in the media try to make the games more interesting by complementing play with statistics.
Type 4: Industry - Companies use sports data to create products for sports teams and fans. You can work for one of these companies to either help coaches or help fans enjoy the game.

Sports analytics is really adopted by many of the reputed clubs and teams. In India also IPL teams are using it and as well as Australian team also shared how they are using sports analytics. I also saw the moneyball movie it is really amazing...

#64: I never had the chance to have time on Fridays or Saturdays for 66 Days of Data, today was my lucky day! I do like the one that gives insights to make decisions or help the athletes to improve performance. In the past was difficult to keep track of how an athlete was responding to the training loads, how was sleeping, how was recovering with all the variables that differ from gender to position in the game (or sport). It's fascinating to see how some products and the Data Science applied have helped organizations, coaches, and athletes to find the invisible reasons for bad performance or injury :) On that, I think that the psychological component it's not being evaluated, which could be a great area to focus too! #66daysofdata

Hey Ken! Great video. I've done some simple sports analysis in my own project portfolio. How can I start to find the jobs under type 1, type 2, or type 4? I couldn't find the company z-grew that you mentioned based out of chicago.

Hi! Loved the video! Super informative! I do have a question though. I'll actually be starting my first corporate job as a sports analyst focusing on the second example. But really, I want to get involved in the first type of sports analysis focusing on performance. Is there a way for me to "cross-train" in preparation for the performance role while fulfilling my role as a sports analyst focusing on odds?

Congrats on the Job! I recommend just trying to work on projects during your free time. You should have access to a bit more data, leverage that into some cool insights and show it off!

Hey Ken, great video! How hard is it to break into sports analytics compared to other fields? And would getting a job in sports analytics close doors to working as data scientist in other industries?

Hi Raj! I would say sports analytics is quite a bit harder to break into than other fields. There is a pretty small number of job openings unfortunately. However, working in this domain definitely won't hurt your options for other industries. I hope this helps!

Mathletics is for sports in general. It covers 3 different ones (Football, Baseball, & Basketball). The concepts can be applied outside of those fields though. The rest are specific to the sport.

Sports in general is very competitive, so you need to do many projects and share them to get recognized. If you're a student, I recommend internships and hackathons if you have access to them.

Thanks for subscribing! To answer your questions. 1) Doesn't matter which one you start with. I would personally start with python or excel though because they allow you to start analyzing data right out of the gate 2) Not that I know of, but you could be the first one! 3) It depends, analysts in sports generally make less than analysts in other fields (very high demand for roles in sports). They still make a good living though

1. I’m going to college and I’m considering to major in sports analytics, sports business, or sport studies and I wanna know what’s the best 2. I know a bit about sports like basketball and football and combat sports but when it comes to things like baseball i don’t know how it works my question is do I need to know everything about all these sports to get this job or study a major like this or how does it work, what do I need to know abt sports or do I even need to know?

Hello, I’m a computer programmer. Been looking at getting into sports analytics. Does being older (36) make it harder to break into this field? It just seems like most of the people I come across in sports analytics are pretty young.

I think there is equal opportunity here, however there is still a time and opportunity cost component. In sports you make far less money (about 2/3 what you could make in industry), and you usually have to start near-ish to the bottom. You should still have the same chances to get a job, but your opportunity cost may be far greater. If the money isn't important, I say go for it!

@@galvindays748 nope, i am currently in college 3rd year pursuing bachleors in statistics.. Doing a coursera course on predictive modelling in sport analytics from coursera.. Since a lot of statistics have been taught to us... I am now focusing on the coding part.

I'm not sure about that one. There are very few masters in sports analytics programs. In general, it this is a very difficult field to break into though

I recommend studying statistics / computer science in school and trying your best to find some internships! Those are usually the best first steps!

@@ronakjain7192 I would go on kaggle.com to see if that data set already exists. If not, I would recommend trying to find a place on the internet that has it and then scraping it. There are some great videos on scraping the internet with python on youtube.

I’m confused as to why analytics is so important in sports b/c of the A’s when the A’s never actually won anything? Where they successful, yes? But they never got a Championship so it ultimately didn’t work.

Hey Jason - This is a valid question! They still made it to the playoffs, even with by far the lowest player salary cap in the league. Analytics helped them to compete with teams with abundant superstars even though they had essentially nobodies. There are still intangibles, and analytics can only take you so far though. I hope this clears some things up!

@@KenJee_ds I can understand that and I’m not 100% against analytics in sports I believe it has its places but it’s beginning to take out the emotion in sports at some levels. For instance the shift in baseball has made the game tough to watch, and it takes the gut feeling out of sports as well. However I do believe that it is a great way to develop talent to be more efficient and effective as well as making scouting more accurate.

@@jasonphillips3796 I completely agree with you here! Look at basketball, game has completely changed, the part that made Jordan great to watch (mostly mid-range acrobatics) has almost completely disappeared. There is definitely a balance between performance and fan enjoyment that may be fading
