I've had a few of my friends and family ask me what SteamOS is all about so I made a video explaining just that.
This video is the culmination of two months of work. Let me know what you think!

Its about a third of the Steam Library on Linux now, it definitely keeps growing. Also Valve doesn't give steamOS away, they are required to release it for free because it is built on Debian GNU/Linux

The Linux Gamer if that makes you feel better, streaming shouldn't be considered a solution, but a workaround. ;)
@wulfsburg65
@wulfsburg65 9 лет назад
John Janez Honestly though, in home streaming is not even close to playing it on the original machine. Even with a high end rig doing "all the heavy lifting", the encoding and decoding adds a layer of grain, and reduces the frame rate of the stream to be like playing it over the internet. For example, streaming The Witcher 3, you lose all the high frame rate and detail that make it so gorgeous. I have had high hopes for in home streaming, but just built a separate rig for couch games because it doesn't work as good IRL as it does on paper.
@jlnprssnr

John Janez inhome streaming makes Steam Machines completely obsolete for me, because I can play with the full quality of my desktop machine on my TV, where just a cheap notebook is attached.

Good video. The production value and information are good enough that this could function as a long trailer or informational video about steam os that could be put anywhere. In fact, Valve has been really bad about things like this and if they posted a link to this video on their website, it would be really good for everyone involved.

For a lot of people who think it will, or for some reason, want it to fail, I think it is interesting to note that currently Steam has over 1,200 titles with Linux support currently and SteamOS isn't due to be released until November. That's another 300 titles possibly. So say we have 1,500 at release compared to titles available for each Xbox or PlayStation system at release. It won't be the living room gaming killer out of the box but that is a huge leg up on the competition. I do have high hopes for SteamOS but after November, it depends on Triple A adaption, sadly. We will need bigger companies to start supporting to make it more appealing to some of the bigger gamers. I think if companies like Bethesda or Blizzard decide to port some titles over, that means us Linux gamers have won.

I only install steamOS to test the game streaming and it works very well. The computer I installed it on could never run the games on its own, the computer was comprised of old hardware. Makes me what to build a tiny ITX system, using Intel's 4600 graphics solution.
@gardiner_bryant
@gardiner_bryant 8 лет назад
+haz939 I don't believe SteamOS "supports" Intel 4600 graphics right now, but it's certainly an option. You might also want to look at AMD's integrated components. If discreet graphics aren't in your budget or form factor, the A10-line of processors have Radeon HD chips built in. The latest chipsets have better performance using newer drivers.

I've wanted to move to linux for years now. Its getting to the point where I'm thinking of moving to linux now. Its more secure and just works compaired to windows. The only real reason i can think of not moving yet is that all my games wont work yet and they need more software support. Other then that linux is a very good opporating system. In time it will only get better. A lot of softeware will work on linux using something like wine. Give it a try you can all ways use a dual install so you can have the best of both worlds.

Nice video, just a small nitpick: Your point about the Vulkan API is pretty misleading. Yes, if you compare Vulkan to the old generation of APIs (OpenGL4/Direct3D11), it brings great amounts of performance benefits, but nothing stops Vulkan games from running under Windows, and titles built with Direct3D12 (which is just a D3D'ified Mantle really) will run equally well on Windows.

In big picture, linux and windows kernel are significantly different when it comes to executing a task (in your case, a game). Windows follows a direct transition from user to kernel mode (which makes it easier for malware and virus to infect it). On the other hand, linux uses a messaging system between user and kernel mode (which makes it so secure). This messaging system becomes one of the main reason for slower performance on linux. If Valve wants a better performance out of their Steam-OS, they must work on following 1.. Tweaking linux messaging system to improve performance 2.. Specialized hardware where device drivers come directly from manufacturers

Yes, I know this is an old video, but, it's my first time watching. lol First off, you did an amazing job on the video. However, you findings are not my findings. With SteamOS, most of my heavy titles, like Alien Isolation and Dying Light, just weren't playable. I even had to use my Steam Controller with the included cable. Not sure if that's changed now or not. I run Manjaro Mate and I can run my games on max setting with nary an issue. Steam controller must still be used with the cable, but, I'm not much of a controller user. My hands don't work like they used to. But, anyways, great job on the video. Keep up the amazing work.

Hello, very enjoyed your channel and would like to know a few things ... 1-Does steamos will have options to change the look of the display banners from the Big Picture? For loved their box arts of AAA games and would like to see something in steamos 2-Will will support the control of the Xbox One ?? For I have a control of XONE and wanted to use it in the system 3-could provide the box art? LOL I am very eager to use the steamos because I had a great affection for the system since it was announced in 2013 and I hope the studios embrace the steamos as a great platform for games. Furthermore, we will have more games coming to the steamos Alien: Isolation Mad Max Unreal Tournament Project C.A.R.S. 2 Grid Autosport Rocket League Trine 3 among many others

That was awesome! One question: How did you make it? Just to be that guy: You do realize that windows will have Vulkan as well right?:P
@3vi1J
@3vi1J 9 лет назад
Eho419 Linux outperforms Windows in core OS functionality. For instance, L4D2 runs faster on Linux than Windows, even though it has extra overhead for OpenGL. If the 3D API field is evened out, it's going to run even faster.
@deerskin2394
@deerskin2394 9 лет назад
Eho419 True, and I think people build up this weightless hype that Vulkan is going to be amazingly beneficial as soon as it's released without taking into account the time it takes to make a 3D game with a brand new API.
@Nyocurio
@Nyocurio 9 лет назад
TigerTrack0 Since the developers of major game engines, Valve included, are heavily involved with the development of Vulkan, I think it's fair to say their engines will have Vulkan support on or near the launch of said API.
@deerskin2394

You do realize how hard it is to write any 3D application with an unfinished API? I honestly doubt there will be anything notable for some time after the release of Vulkan.

Interesting concept, and awesome for a free alternative. However, for myself, and let be honest, most people would be willing to pay for an OEM copy (what, $100 max?) of windows to not only have way better performance due to hardware support, but access to all games since they are all available in Windows. Fun to dink around with for sure, but not worth it for most people.

reasons why for steamos desktop gaming? *more than 1600 games atm do not have controller support or is there any intention from the devs, to give their games console like support (according to steams on tags, check it) *And the some 1300 that are supported, which i mean some of the best games on steam (over 300 of which are only partial support) do not do a good job of bringing a console like exp to their games. Small inventorys etc. but that could all change, but doubtfall. Its alot of devs to fall in line on the Big picture mode/steamOS doctrine (hah)

I don't know. Seems like a uphill battle to me. SteamOS not only has its own limitations since Windows games can't run on it, but it also has the limitation of PC where you miss out on console exclusives. It's already tough enough to convince people to get inot PC when they know they will miss out on their Uncharteds and god of wars but now its an even tougher sell with half the AAA games not being supported. My advice, if you run a micro PC as a "Console PC" dual boot Linux and windows to at the very least have access to 100% of PC gamings library.

Eh, might as well use something else than SteamOS such as Ubuntu and it's alternatives based on it such as Kubuntu or Xubuntu to name a few or use Antergos. From what I've heard, SteamOS isn't updated and still uses the outdated libraries. I am on Antergos right now and forced Steam to use the libraries from my system instead of it's own. Compared to the Linux Mint or Ubuntu i have used on, it runs miles better if newer libraries are involved.

Get a job. And no, because you most likely pirated the Windows version.

+TheDeceivingEye I answered the question. If he wanted a warm welcome then he shouldn't have introduced himself with "hi! please help me harm the linux community"

+Moon Mamun IT crimes? Yeah no. There's not a generic IT crime task force charged with hunting down pirates. That's the job of the owner of the intellectual property being infringed. Shoo, troll.

I tried to install SteamOS in a VirtualBox Virtual Machine (VM) to test out functionality. the SteamOS does not like being virtualized. It installs just fine, however, after it self updates, it craps out entirely. An interesting point.

+Charles Baldwin III It probably won't work in a VM since it's essentially Steam Big Picture Mode (a 3D-accelerated UI).

+The Linux Gamer Good point, sir! Thanks for the quick reply. I love Linux. I use Mint 17.3, and OpenSUSE 13.2.
