As a current 2nd year BSc Maths and Econ student at LSE, today I am reflecting on my first year of uni - how I found the transition to university level study, my honest review of each module, and what your options can look like in Year 2 and Year 3.

Is mathematics with data science also a course you can switch to before your 2nd year?

yes i can certainly plan this out! however, i’m looking to go in a completely different direction after my degree, so maybe would be more of an informational video as opposed to my own opinion and perspective. unless that is helpful also?

Hi Caitlin, I’m in year 12 starting UCAS and personal statement. I am applying to LSE maths & econ too - do you have any tips for me to standout please? I’m looking to read up some maths related models like Leontief / Cobb Douglas functions and some regression models etc., but was your ps more maths-based or econ based?

It shouldnt be more maths or more econ based as i think it should be 50/50 split :) good luck!

Hi! Thanks so much for your message. I personally think the best way to approach applying for a joint degree is to write a personal statement that addresses the intersection between the two subjects. I think this shows a more sophisticated and deeper level of thinking, as opposed to just splitting it 50/50 with two topics that have no clear link to each other. So I chose to discuss areas of economics that relied heavily on mathematical/statistical techniques and then reflected on how these methods are used to tackle societal issues, as that is what I am passionate about. Your suggestion of reading up on those models is another perfect example of this, so I would definitely say go for it! You don’t need to have a perfect balance, as long as you can show sufficient interest and passion for both. I think with LSE it’s important to link what you’re talking about to real world examples and case studies, as this is definitely something they’re big on, and it also allows you to further personalise your PS by selecting case studies that you find interesting. In addition to academics, a great way to stand out to LSE admissions is to find ways that your extracurricular activities can link back to the passions/goals you’re highlighting in your personal statement, and especially if you can find examples of things you’ve done that have had a demonstrable positive impact on society. I hope that helps! Let me know if I can help further, and I’m more than happy to read over your draft once completed if that would help too!

Hi, I don’t do a level economics but I do a level maths so would I still be able to apply for this course?
@CaitzAnnie

hi, yes you absolutely can! i also didn’t take a level economics, and the same was true for many of my friends, so you are not at any disadvantage. a levels in maths and further maths are what is important. hope this helps :)

You study 9hours a week?
@aminamin8910
@aminamin8910 7 месяцев назад
How much hours in general you study per week ? Between class and homework??
@CaitzAnnie
@CaitzAnnie 7 месяцев назад
it depends on your modules and how easy/hard you find the topics, as well as what you choose to prioritise. in general, we have around 5-6 hours a week of classes and lectures per module, so around 20 hours of teaching time in total. then personally i would study around 8-10 hours a week per module on top of this, so 30-40 hours of independent study. however, i would say this is probably on the upper end! many people follow a similar study schedule, but many others also work their way through with much less time commitment. it completely depends on how you work best, and what routine works for you.
