This video on stuttering by Lenora Edwards from Better Speech is incredibly informative and supportive, especially for parents, caregivers, and educators dealing with young children who stutter. The explanation of stuttering, also known as disfluency, affecting about 5% of children between ages 2 and 5, was enlightening. Understanding that stuttering involves disruptions in speech such as repetitions, prolongations, and blocks really helps in recognizing the signs early on.

This video apparently teaches that stuttering does not mean being considered shy or badly behaved. Therefore, someone who stutters should be taught how to teach good communication until they are fluent and train their facial and oral expressions so that they are not too stiff. These tips are very relevant to what is conveyed in the video.

Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by repetition of sounds, syllables, or words; prolongation of sounds; and interruptions in speech known as blocks. An individual who stutters exactly knows what he or she would like to say but has trouble producing a normal flow of speech. These speech disruptions may be accompanied by struggle behaviors, such as rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips. Stuttering can make it difficult to communicate with other people, which often affects a person’s quality of life and interpersonal relationships. Stuttering can also negatively influence job performance and opportunities, and treatment can come at a high financial cost.
