What is subject to dismissal and academic probation at UCLA? How do you get back on track and graduate? In this video, I will share my experience with Subject to Dismissal at UCLA and how I was able to graduate.
According to UCLA,
"You will be placed on probation if your term or overall grade-point average (GPA) falls between 1.5 and 1.99. You will be subject to dismissal if your grade-point average in any one term is less than 1.5 OR if you do not earn at least a C (2.0) average in any one term when you were on probation OR if you do not end probation by the end of the next term. Subject to Dismissal does not mean that you are going to be immediately dismissed; however, you must make an appointment to meet with your OASA Counselor who will explain the conditions under which you will be allowed to continue. Thank you for making a video about this...I am a UC student and I think I will be subject to dismissal this quarter and very scared since I already had an academic probation two quarters ago... I never diagnosed with depression and ADHD but I think I have those since I having trouble with concentrating and setting goals. I really want to graduate from school. I also had a family issue since last year. I am so scared right now...

sorry to hear that... it's tough. I recommend you to talk to your academic advisor/counselor to plan your next step. It's bad to keep thinking about the worst/what could happen. It's better to be proactive and figure out what is the best next step. You never know, you can talk to your counselor and figure a way to stay by withdrawing temporarily and come back when you are better mentally.

I’ve been searching for an informative video about this for a long time. I am a UC Student and I performed terribly last quarter because of family issues, money issues, and COVID-19. I also have a history with mental issues as well. I am a first quarter freshman and received a sub 1.0 GPA while doing online school. I have not received a notification yet about dismissal but I hope they give me a second chance. Do you think they can automatically dismiss you if your GPA is low enough for one quarter, or will they always give you a second chance?

First of all, please take care of yourself and take one step at a time dealing w/ this situation. No, school will not automatically dismiss u for 1 bad quarter. I had 1 bad quarter due to a bad depression where I didn't even show up to my finals, which left w/ all D & F... The school will give u a second chance. (1) talk to school counselor & explain what happened. They probably going to ask u to write a letter of intent or something similar to explain how you going to do better next quarter (work w/ ur counselor) (2) There should be school resources like student mentor or maybe therapy session if ur student health cover that (I did all my free therapy after my bad quarter). (3) take easy classes next quarter & reduce ur school load so that u r guarantee to pass all your classes, hopefully, get all straight A to boost up your GPA. Still, the goal is to pass all ur classes next quarter to show that u can continue school. (4) U will probably on school probation and need 2-3 consecutive quarters of 2.0 GPA per quarter or more (depending on school). (5) email and talk to ur counselor regularly to not fall off track. (optional) if ur mental health is really bad, it is ok to talk to ur counselor and ask for a break from school and come back next quarter after u readjust urself. Good luck!

Hey I am currently in subject dismissal in UCSC. I didn’t do well in winter22 quarter in two of my classes and ended up getting a low gpa. However, I started to improve a bit in the spring quarter.

First, talk w/ your counselor for direction and to show you are trying. As you said, you had improved a bit. Keep it up for 3 quarters. Different school had different requirements. For me at UCLA, I just need to keep avg GPA 2.0 for 3 quarters (1 year) and I'm back to normal standing. I recommend take 1-2 easy classes that you know you can get A in. ex. foreign language that you can speak, history, or go to your school forum for classes recommendation. Good luck!

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience. Do you have any advice for when it comes to writing the letter of intent?

I recommend talking to your school counselor. You can ask for to talk to one in student union/academic. Then, in the letter, explain why you want to stay, then reason why your grade drop, and how you plan to raise up your grade and prevent what happened from happen again in the future. Good luck.

Thank you, this was helpful. I am also a UC student and was just told yesterday that I am subject to dismissal and am very scared. In the email notification I am being asked to write a letter and was also told they will inform me about their decision (about me being dismissed or not) on the same day I turn in the letter. This worries me because how are they making this decision so soon, what if they are only judging based off my grades (which are terrible).

i recommend you to work with your school counselor to write that letter. In the letter, explain why you got bad grades (bad health, family issues, mental illness, bully, etc.) How are u going to continue to do better next quarter and going to graduate? For example, I had a bad depression, family issues, and health issue. In the letter, I included that I went to school therapy (also included the therapist note), how I will address/deal w/ family issue, and how I cont w/ doctor visits to keep my health in check. At the end, I explain how I am going to finish the rest of my school year and how I will graduate in time. Your school counselor will help u write the best letter bcuz he or she should know. Remember, the school like to have high graduation rate so they don't kick out students unless they have no idea how they going to graduate and kept on doing bad/getting bad grades. Important, if u think u need a break from school, talk to ur counselor to take a quarter off before coming back and do ur academic probation (get passing grades for the next few quarters). Good luck!

I recommend you to speak to your school counselor or your major academic counselor. If you are going to get below 2.0 this quarter, it's better to withdraw from your classes now. Then, come back next quarter and take easier classes that will guarantee you with at least a B or 3.0+ overall for that quarter. then, slowly you can add harder classes. When I got subjected to dismissal, I did 2 major classes and 2 easier general ed classes that I know can i get at least a B or higher in to improve my gpa. You need 3 quarters to get rid of your probation period (that also included summer school). Good luck, please talk to your counselor. Idk your mental state atm... However, when I was struggling, I did use my school psych therapy sessions (if ur school offers). It hard to get out of the dregg, which is why you need to discuss with your counselor if it's better to withdraw or not. Good luck.
