Magritte my favorite surrealist but Dali is fascinating----both the man & his work. He, also, was quite the showman, which I find perfectly acceptable in an artist, as long as it isn't strictly egotism or arrogance. Dali used his public image playfully but with a subtle purpose, too, i.e., bringing attention, not only to his work, but to surrealism in general. Yes, he was an "actor" in this regard, or, as I prefer, showman, yet his flamboyance was colorful & amusing, timed perfectly for the very-visual 20th-century. This video, imaginatively done, reminded me that the term "surrealism" means far more than the merely weird. The word's become overused & misapplied but its Freudian underpinnings, as first outlined by Breton, really help explain the foundations of its origins. Thank you for this.
+Lisa Lovely LPA Yes you are correct. Since the surrealists said subconscious, and they are really the same thing, I thought it less confusing for the sake of the video and used the same term. Thanks for the input!
+Samanwaya Unplugged Kafka certainly has surreal moments in his work, no doubt. While his work can be surreal I wouldn't call his work actual surrealism :) I know, it is hard to explain. It is hard to say if an artist is a surrealist or not as people differ in their definition, personally what I consider true surrealist work would be like the film "un chien andalou" or the book "the magnetic fields". I am not familiar with Jibananda, but I will look him up. Thanks for mentioning him.
