Uniform seems to be a big concern with a great deal of leadership out there. Many of the top-rated videos on this channel have to do with uniforms and patches. Join ScouterStan as he describes his uniform and the story that it tells. Have you ever had to explain patches on your uniform? Not many of the adult leadership are actively uniform inspected. However, they need to set the example however they can. Have you ever wondered what something was on an adult's uniform and didn't ask? Does your district or council have some kind of patch that identifies a particular program or service? This interactive video asks the question what's that on your uniform?

I get questions about my uniform patches all the time. I believe that wearing unique patches opens up a dialogue in the story that my uniform shirt tells. There are leaders out there who wear blank shirts with little or no patches on them. To do this regular basis can be perceived as being deceitful. As an example, I'm going to go through the items that I normally wear on this channel. This shirt is the one I wear when I'm representing my district as a neighborhood unit commissioner. There are times when this can be beneficial. Troop guides at Wood Badge often start the week with a plain shirt. This is to get the participants to focus on leadership development within their patrol instead of relying on the perception of leadership from their guide.
Left Sleeve - NESA council strip, unit numbers, position patch, and training status.
Left Pocket - Achieved square knots above the pocket.

Do you have something on your uniform that is special to you or your area? Let us know in the comments section.
📊 Poll (11/16/2021): The uniform is a major part of Scouting. The patches on an adult uniform can tell a story. In the next video, ScouterStan explains many patches on his uniform. What is your opinion? (85 votes)

As a youth I made it from cubs to tenderfoot before pursuing other paths. When my daughter joined the troop I became a leader. When I bought my shirt it came with the current council patch and I quickly removed it. I replaced it with a council patch from the era when I was a scout. I think it looks better. It also lets me talk about my time in scouts to the youth and other adults. I have a few other special occasion council strips, but I haven't found one that can replace the vintage one on my shoulder yet.

Congrats on the Silver Beaver Award! I just recently returned to my Troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster 6 years after leaving the troop during highschool in order to focus on school. My Great Grandfather was in Scouting for a very long time during which he ultimately earned a spot within the Vigil of Honor in the OA, and the Silver Beaver, among other things that I probably haven't heard about from my father. My hope is to be able to make at least a quarter of the impact that he did during his time in Scouting.

Welcome back to Scouting. Having a legacy in Scouting is a good motivation to build a Scouting future. The second promise in the oath is _“to help others at all times”_ and that includes the youth in your community. You are putting it all into action when you re-joined the Troop. I grew up in Scouting and left for 20 years. Then my son and I joined Cub Scouts and I never left Scouting. Scouting service can be a lifelong commitment to your community. If you have any questions or comments please let us know. YIS⚜ _(Yours In Scout-spirit)_

I think the most unique thing I had on my uniform as a youth was a jug knot made from Blue Paracord. The 2nd year that I was on NYLT Staff, they started a tradition of giving staffers a handmade jug knot made from the same colored paracord as their patrol color when they were a participant in the program. #BlueTeam4Life

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me why my flag patch was on backwards and I had to say "We're Scouts, not the Military." I would be a rich woman. If I had a nickel for every time I had to say "We're Scouts, not the Military" in any context, then I think my entire family would be set for life for a few generations. Nothing against the Military, I have family members who have served, but we really need to emphasize that Scouts is a CIVILIAN organization. That is an EXTREMELY important distinction to make.

I wear a Tipisa flap from the 1993 National Jambo as that was the last National event that I participated as a youth in this Lodge. I moved not long after that, and was part of a different Council and Lodge when I went to NOAC and earned my Eagle. My CFL CSP is also from the same vintage. Oriental blue and silver gray are the colors traditionally associated with Military Intelligence units. The three sections of the background refer to the three types of intelligence: human intelligence, signals intelligence, imagery intelligence. The blue stripe bordered by the two gray ones suggest the Panama Canal, referring to the “collection and funneling” of information and alluding to the unit’s previous location. The griffin, a mythological creature of vigilance and strength, a guardian of gold, symbolizes the unit’s mission. Black represents secrecy of the operations.

I earned as a youth the Venturing Ranger Award, and wear the corresponding metal bar on the left pocket. In my council at least, it’s a pretty rare award. I’ve only seen one other Scouter wearing it. Another great video!! I’m currently putting together a new tab Boy Scout uniform, I’ve got a “Venture” Strip, a custom OA world crest ring, a custom troop numbers patch (with town name) with some older red epaulettes and a limited edition lodge flap. While I’ve always worn just one uniform, I know see the value in wearing the Class A in more formal occasions. Now I have multiple and a Venturing uniform! While many scouters wear the Poly Wool “formal” Class A’s, I think it’s better for scouts to be willing to roll up their sleeves and get dirty, serving in their Class A uniforms!

It's a bit of a contradiction to have a military patch on the uniform when you went to great lengths to explain why the flag is oriented in your so called 'peace' position. I don't know if this is allowed but i am a new unit commissioner ( lifelong scouter and eagle scout) and I decided that i'm going to don the Venture uniform instead of the traditional one. I have two reasons for that. reason one ( the least of the two) is I always loved the color and look, and growing up i didn't know what the green uniform was until i got my eagle at 17 and at that point i was on my way to be an assistant scout master for my troop and never got the chance to do venturing. reason two ( the most important reason) is I am going to use it show support of the program and use it as an educational tool to help grow awareness to the program. I service 3 packs 4 troops and a crew and there are only two venture crews within 20 miles of my home and i aim to change that by bringing awareness to a side of scouting that not many people know exist because you can be duel registered with scouts BSA and Venturing and still earn your eagle scout. do you have any thoughts or comments I would love to hear them
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 2 года назад
That is wonderful news! We need more scout leaders like you to step up and fill the ranks of commissioners nationwide. If your focus is on venturing by all means you should have a uniform shirt that matches. Although not all Venturing crews choose to use that uniform. Some are far more casual or adopt a more unhindered uniform. In my experience as a Unit Commissioner, if you have more than six units you are what is known as a Neighborhood Commissioner (no patch for it these days). Remember not to get overwhelmed and burned out. Always schedule time for yourself and your family first. You can't help units succeed if you're not able to balance the rest of life’s challenges. Keep in mind to work closely with your District Commissioner. If you have questions you can always drop us a line here. Congratulations on all that you have done and all that will happen with your volunteer service. Thank you so much for taking on this challenge. YIS⚜

Why do you have much better badges that us English Scouters?!! Your patches are so much nicer than ours
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 2 года назад
That's really strange because many scouts here in the states think that the European patches are better. I think it's a “grass is always greener” effect, maybe? Many of the patches worn over in your part of the world are woven flat and tend to last longer in the laundry. A lot of the patches in the states are full embroidered with lots of threads and tend to break up and get worn out quickly. Many of the woven patches tend to be lower in resolution especially the small ones. The fully embroidered patches blend different thread colors of the same hue creating depth. I remember ordering an Order of the Arrow chapter patch and discovering that 12 thread colors were included in the basic price. We have weird embroidered patches, especially the “ghosted” patches we're the same thread color is used throughout. Only the stitching pattern of the embroidery can actually be seen. Some patches even go as far as using glow-in-the-dark and ultraviolet reacting thread. I've even seen patches that were woven on top of laser refracting material that changed colors in sunlight. I got a temporary patch one time that had fringe literally sewn onto it like a Persian rug. Alright, you got me… we do have some pretty cool patches here. I hope you liked the last video. I get questions about patches on the uniform all the time. Which is a good thing because I know they're looking at it and thinking. The uniform shirt tells a story, especially for unit leaders. I really liked your video with the uniform police Investigating English uniforms. Don't send the uniform police after me. LOL I also liked your video on marshmallow roasting with your kids. I’m not sure if you made it clear enough that the patrol patch, recruiter patch, NYLT beads, and wearing an old JTE patch if your district had earned JTE after 2015, are not consistent with the guide to awards and insignia. I’m not going to confront you about it, but others shouldn’t think these are official.

Sorry that I wasn't clear. In my council all of these we're official and have special meaning to me. The patrol patch was approved for official wear by the council for the district membership patrol. As of the beginning of this year 2022, it has been disbanded and I have not joined the new team. The recruiter patch was also approved by the council as an incentive to sign up scouts. Of course, Recruiting 1000 new Scouts is a goal that is not easily achievable and took me several years. Our council also approved the awarding of NYLT miniature woggles to be worn on the wood badge strand. The old JTE patch from 2015 was very special to me because it was the first year that we ever achieved gold in our district. As far as I know, everything I wear was officially given or awarded to me by the district or council. In general, you may be correct but wearing the patches generates lots of questions which allows me to recruit leaders for the council and district needs. It's a great way to start a conversation about how other leaders can help out in more ways than they know. I was hoping to retire the shirt soon and a new set of patches will be installed. The old uniform shirt is starting to fray on the sleeves and near the pockets. But after 17 years of wearing it weekly, it has held up pretty good. My apologies if you think I was not clear in the video. YIS⚜

@@ScouterStan Well, with your reach of viewership, you may wish to be careful. Just because a district says it is ok, by no means is it ok. For example, the Guide to Awards and Insignia is very clear that districts are not to have patches that are worn on the sleeve as you have/had. If anything, it would be a temporary patch. While they may be conversation starters, setting an example that shouldn’t be followed is counterproductive.

Hey Matthew, sorry for all the confusion. It's not like I'm a uniformed expert or anything I just believe that all of the patches that I wear with pride are official, sanctioned, and approved. It's not like I dug through the dollar patchbox at the scout shop and picked out the pretty patches to put on. I'm so glad that many Scouters take pride in their achievements and wear them as inspiration. Unfortunately, there are Scouters out there who do abuse uniform options. I don't say anything as long as it's not a mistake that is easily updated. Adherence to the guidelines is interpretive and only based on experience. Example: If I choose to where the Dharma Initiative patch from the television show LOST instead of a council strip how many years in uniform jail would I get? The answer would be quite ludicrous. I fervently believe unless you are actually trying to help someone maybe it's better not to say anything. But if they've got the knot patch on upside down maybe privately bringing that to their attention would be helpful, friendly, and courteous. On a slightly more serious note, the Insignia guide covers special badges on page 7 of Section VII under programs - “Special Local Badges and Insignia Local councils are authorized to adopt special badges and insignia as awards for particular purposes in harmony with national policies and to permit their use upon the official uniform in accordance with the Rules and Regulations, policies, and guidelines of the Boy Scouts of America.” filestore.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/33066/33066_Excerpts_From_The_Rules_And_Regulations_WEB.pdf I often think of the line from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie, when they talk about “The CODE”. Captain Barbosa was more accurate in stating that “they're more like… guidelines”. Sorry again for all the confusion. I do value your input into our conversation. Thank you YIS⚜

Can you be a Sea Scout and a lone scout?
@ScouterStan
@ScouterStan 2 года назад
The Lone Scout program is intended for individuals living remotely without access to a unit. I do not believe that Sea Scouts has anything like that. But thank you for the question. YIS⚜

Hello, I meant a lone scout that doesn't have access to a Ship.

The Lone Scout program is intended to give a Cub Scouts or Scouts BSA experience to youth that has no unit to join. Sea Scouts is not available as its program is unit-based and independent. For additional information on the Lone Scout program visit this link: www.scouting.org/commissioners/lone-scout/ to find a unit in your area visit beascout.scouting.org/ Thanks YIS⚜

I promise I’m not trying to be rude here. I’m trying to help Scouting. Yup. You and about three other people know what those knots mean. We need to show our kids what we’ve done. Continue with the “story” and you’ll put one of the final nails in Scouting. You just stick to history and everyone else will continue to pass you by. And I don’t want that! I LOVE Scouting. Come on! Maybe the example you need to set needs to be reevaluated like everything BSA. You are preaching to the choir. If we want to survive, we need to preach to the uninitiated. I’d hope to get several thumbs up on this, however these videos are so irrelevant to our Scouts that almost no one watches. That should be a clue. Save Scouting!

I'm pretty sure you're way off base here. There's nothing wrong with the story that the uniform tells. You said a lot of things but didn't offer any better solutions. I think the nail in the coffin to scouting is attitudes like the one you presented here.

Thank you for your input. This channel has always been for registered Scouters to become better leaders. Not intended to be a recruitment of non-scout people. There are more than welcome to view the videos here as that is an open public forum. Nothing discussed in our videos is intended to be kept a secret or out of view. Many Scouts (youth) for whatever reason watch these videos also. It may be a curiosity on a subject that they don't know about. I firmly believe that traditions and history are important even today. Many people claim that to be “relevant” you have to dismiss the past and I just disagree with that completely. Every Scouter will tell you that when you're on a hike, you have to know where you've been in order to know where you're going. Scouting has gone through many changes over the past century, but one thing has stayed consistent and that is the Scout Oath and Law being at the core. I would like to invite you to submit subjects and treatments for video production for this channel. Please send them by email (link in the about tab) I will consider everything submitted. Thank you again for your input. I'm always open to making this a better channel for more leaders. YIS⚜

Thanks Nicholas. As with many things in life attitude is everything. Choosing to be positive and doing something positive requires choice and commitment. Scout leaders do this every day. I'm continuously impressed with Scout leaders all over the nation, donating freely their time to make a change. The scout values are important especially today. They're not fashionable too many people but it's core values we'll end up saving their lives. On a lighter note. I always find it funny when people say “preaching to the choir”… I've actually been in a church choir and some Sunday mornings we were also the congregation in a small struggling church. I instantly think of that when I hear it. My Scoutmaster was also the Preacher and he said that he would not be able to deliver the sermon if he could see the congregation. He told us that the choir was the only ones he could see because of the lighting. As a choir boy, I realized that he could see when I was goofing off or napping. So I instantly started to pay attention to the sermon. I learned a lot of good stuff from the Preacher “preaching to the choir”. YIS⚜

Get your own patch if you didn't serve, if it is a legit unit patch, you didn't earn it, you shouldn't wear it. If it were my unit patch, I would either rip it off your uniform or take your uniform as a treasure of my own.
