Hawaiʻi prides itself on its aloha spirit, which is so ingrained into our way of life that it's defined in our State Constitution. But does the kindness, compassion and sense of stewardship associated with aloha still exist today? Beyond marketing and tourism campaigns, where can we find the aloha spirit in Hawaii's businesses, government and lifestyles?
Host and Moderator: Mahealani Richardson
Guests:
George Kam - Ambassador of Aloha, Quicksilver
Jessica Rich - Executive Director, Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii
Kaipo Ho - Manager of Cultural Experiences, Outrigger Enterprises

People come back because they can. And being bombarded by outsiders push Hawaiians out and the aloha spirit turns to resentment. People come here with no real interest in how we roll so they bring their values with them and perpetuate them. The tourist industry have the responsibility to educate visitors on how we live and think and to respect us. This is not an entitlement lala land for tourists and the flip side is how cruel our people can be to tourists. It is a multi layered problem that has been ignored by the tourist industry, community and government- it has to be addressed immediately.aloha is more than love. It is a responsibility to our culture as Hawaiians because we were taught aloha from birth. It’s not just love. It is in the na’au - innate instinct. And that can’t be taught. Either you have it or not.

Our 3-year tour to Honolulu was beautiful in general, but regarding one of our neighbors when we lived in a beautiful rental home, very negative. As of the day I briefly visited the owners of a barking dog which had an undisciplined barking fit at 5am one work day morning, dents began appearing in the back of my van which faced the street. Every few days I'd have a new dent in my van (some aloha spirit). I guess that dog owner felt as if as a "visitor" to the island, I had no right to complain about his pooch barking and waking me at 5am. Fortunately, when I decided to sell that van prior to our next tour to Stuttgart, Germany, a small group of men from a Pacific island (not Hawaii) wanted my van for the price I was selling it without ever having looked at the back of the vehicle where all the dents were. Even after I showed them the dents, they still wanted it for my listing price.

,It aches my heart for the true Hawaiians. Our traditional hospitality suffers when it be comes part of the turism corporate world, when our heritage is trampled , not respected . For Native Hawaiians is worst. I remember when they were the Kings of the surf sport. Now, ... My love to all the true Hawaiians, to the Real Kingdom of Hawai'i.
