Crazy that I've seen so many of your vids, but never this one, yet I'm also currently climbing on Hyperclimb 11.7 with 9.3 Epi. Although I've always loved that hitch cord, the climbing line is new, (to me at least). Wonderful combo. Thanks for the vid.
You’re the man Dan. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I took your advice 3 or 4 years ago and purchased the Yale blue moon as my first rope. Started out with hitches and moved on to the zig zag. The rope never gave me any issues. Now looking at that petzl rope. Nice that it passes thru the zig zag. Again thanks for all the content. It is super helpful to see how the different pieces in another cimber's kit fit together as a whole integrated system for managing everything together ... If there's anyone completely immune to that mentality of "this one single piece of apparatus [be it rope / mechanical / harness / whatever] got to be the absolute best thing - I must get it." Well ... have yet to meet them. But seeing things laid out in a more thoroughly thought-through, taking time to tease out the points worth considering - what works well with what kind of thing. Good job and entertaining. I'm new to climbing on a rope. Well super new. I am in cable TV and climbed for years on bashlins with a leather strap 20-30 feet off the ground. I want to learn how to tree climb. I have looked at loads of reviews and couldn't make up my mind. I am the guy who is going to get 1 rope and you sold me on the Yale 11.7. Thanks for the video.
I love seeing other people's gear and systems. I mainly use 16 strand for a moving rope system because I like the stretch I get when I'm moving between trees and especially during a big swing or a jump that involves a miss. (I know I shouldn't jump from tree to tree, but I'm not very smart and I think it's fun) I'm over 250 lbs so I find that it makes a difference on my body. Thank you for the video. I enjoyed it!
Donaghys' cougar ropes (available as orange, blue, pink or grey/red) but make sure it's not the CE version (because that stuff is crap). Definitely one of the favourite all purpose ropes in Australia. Semi-static. Amazing on hitches or mechanical devices. Fantastic for both SRS and MRS.
Great video, actually helped me with deciding which climbing rope to get next. I just got in to the industry this year and my first rope has some nicks and discoloration, so I've decided to retire it just to be safe and went with the samson hyperclimb because I do both MRS and SRS climbing. It was a very affordable option I found.
You just convinced me to get DrenaLINE (Stars & Stripes!! pattern) for DRT work. I already have Teufelberger's Tachyon and Xstatic, so now this completes the trifecta. THANK YOU!!
Thanks for the manufacturer info. I have been a fan of Cousin Atrax since the Akimbo came out, but it wasn't available in the US. More recently, Petzl Flow came out with the same eye splice. Both are fantastic, and I'm glad to recommend Flow for anyone running mechanicals, especially the Akimbo and Zigzag. I didn't know they were basically the same rope, but it makes sense.

Thanks for the video, i really appriciate the petzl flow with the zigzag as a beginner. Its almost foolproof (yet) and I really like the thin profile spliced eye Even though i had issuses trusting it in the beginning. Its just so small! But pull tests dont hide the results... The eye isnt Even the weak point crazy enough
I use the "flow" but passing it thru the eye isn't really an advantage. You install the zig once...then yer done. Nobody is taking it in and out and honestly it was still a bit of a pain to install from the "eye end" I tried, even with the little string they provided...it was just easier to install from the other end. Love the rope, but the eye isn't really an advantage IMO. Thanks for the content. What's your opinion on xstatic? I use that for SRT.
Hi I'm trying to learn about the arborist trade. I want to try climbing first and see if I enjoy more over highrise construction. I'm glad I came upon your video as I was wondering what is the best rope to start with? I definitely don't want to skimp. I'd rather have more gear, more safety. Etc. Would the petzl flow be OK to use with foot ascenders? I’m new to this rope climbing stuff. I’m used to using gaffes and a lanyard. So whatever rope you think would be best to start out on I would appreciate it. And thank you for the videos. And also I’m not worried about spending the extra money for a high end rope
Drenaline can also pass through the ZigZag when spliced with the ‘Splife’ technique. It is available here in the U.K. but not sure about other countries.
I've always been a huge Yale poison ivy fan but I do not like the Samson Hyperclimb. Elongation performance is similar but it flattens worse and (my big issue) is that the cover is way easier to pick strands with my ascenders or if it touches my saw teeth while moving about. 6 month old Hyperclimb looks like 2 year old poison ivy.
Hi Dan, I've been using poison Ivy/Hi/Pinkvy etc for about 5 years in combination with Zigzags. I like the way it feels, you can get a good grip and doesn't feel Nylonish. Is drenaLine similar in its durometer? Also, does that mean that there is only a finite amount of the HiVi/Ivy rope left? Hyperclimb or Adrenaline when it runs out. I agree the Ivy just lasts. Dan I have been watching your videos for awhile now. I'm new climber and the videos have been real informative, really appreciate you making them. They have got me off the ground and into the trees! I have a question I'm climbing DRT mostly pine trees at my house at first I just ran the rope over a crotch the rope got pretty gummed up with sap. I've cleaned it and switched to a ring friction saver. I have noticed that the first 15 or so feet of my rope has become rectangular at the tie in it's round and it becomes round again after that section? I've probably used it ten or so times, is this normal, I can't find any information anywhere it's a Sampson rope from Wesspur. Not sure if you have run into this. Any help would be appreciated keep up the good work!
When's the cheque coming from Yale ! 😁 I'm gutted. I've just bought 60m courant squir and it didn't get a mention ! I've not used it yet, but I will be tomorrow, got a mature oak deadwood. I've got some epicord left over from my hitchclimber, and I bought some Sirius cord to try. Any thoughts on this line ? Cheers for what you do for education.
Got the ivy and it's cover rips real easy .bluemoon is thicker and way stronger cover.ivy looks good on camera but it's not as good as moon.the hyperclomb I've never tried but felt it at local shop it feels identical to the ivy.seems easy to tear or pic.
i love my hyperclimb. It runs so nicely for srs and mrs i find. Also hitch cords are finicky. Ive really been playing around lately with different setups that work with my 9 inch rope wrench tether. Its been tuff but ive found the 9.3 and 8 mm 26 inch epicord to be best. The 8 mm is quiet a stiff cordage compared to the 9.3 which is much softer in the hand.
What do you think of Teufelberger Chameleon 11mm static rope as a accessrope? Its like half price to the better brands, but it dont have the nice patterns as they use a mix of leftover fibers, but teufelberger claims that it has the same quality as the more expensive patterned ropes. I was looking at the hyperclimb on the Arborist store's website. Pretty decent price, $1.07 per ft. How is it for knot tieing? I use the double fisherman's instead of spliced eye for attaching to a carabiner. Also how is it for abrasion resistance? I do use a friction saver, but the odd time I will use a second tie in point without using one. The discription on the site states that it is good for both mrs and srs. I'm not climbing using srs yet, but plan on getting into it by the end of this year, and I just recently cut my current rope in the middle of the line, so I'm keeping that in mind looking for a new rope. Hey bro I have a really important question I'm gonna get the kmax rope I just don't like the 11.1mm and this company called gm supply offers it in 1/2inch which is 12.7mm and I will be using the rope with the zigzag and the chicane for SRS I'm just worried the rope will get too thick to be used with my set up over time what do you think do think I should get the 11m or the 12.7mm . which rope is less maintenance? Climbing in the cold weather, ropes get wet and freeze......is there any rope "thermal rated"? Landscape designer here. I am not arborist but I see tangles of arborist ropes around the office, all wet and frozen. What rope you suggest for subzero conditions?
I have some blue moon and recently picked up the hyperclimb cool and they feel very different to me the hyperclimb feels slightly thinner and the core feels kinda squishy maybe it’s just not broken in
Access line is the first line into the tree and it stays in place. This acts as a safety line for rescue if needed. Allows groundies to access the tree if needed to assist. The access line typically will be a robust general purpose climbing line. Should take friction hitch and devices well. Doesn't need to be particularly luxurious in any manner. Could be relatively affordable. 12 or 16 strand 1/2 inch (12.7mm). Orange or blue hi visibility is typical. Access line is a strong hi visibility utility/safety line. Allows the climber to access the tree to the first notch and leave in place while taking the working line further into the tree for canopy work. Kernmantle rope is low stretch and useful if a device will be used to lower a broken climber from the tree. So KM low stretch is highly useful.
Can someone plz explain WHY epocord .9.3 says on the literature to do not use for decending.?especially longer decent or especially boming.out of the tree. ?I like thar cord the best and waz shocked to see that .and it said not heat resistant isn't that what all pursick cords we use are for?second favorite is hrc by tellfelbeeger. Then beeline for lanyards.the older style has those goofy loose sliced ends.that bend to much. They put wax or something on ends?would love to try beeline with regular sewn eyes.
An access line is the line you climb up into the tree on. It's not the line you work on when you are in the tree. You just use it to access or get up into the tree. The logic is that you leave it in the tree while you are working so that if you need rescuing then there is a line in position that one of your ground crew can quickly climb up without having to muck around setting another rope in the tree which takes time and may be difficult if you are in the way. It also means that if you need to get out of the tree quickly then you can descend on the access line.

So is Yale blue tongue the same as Yale blue moon? Both 11.7mm but I just wanted to double check I’m currently using drenaline but I want to start climbing more SRT and I always hear good things about blue moon. If blue tongue is the same rope then I’ll buy that TIA
