What is the best software for music production?
You may have asked yourself the question, like i did.
In the video I’ll discuss some things that can help you choosing your DAW
[2]
What is the best DAW?
The answer to that question may surprise you.
[BUMPER]
[3]
Welcome back, how are you doing? Marvelously well.
If you are new consider subscribing.
[4]
I want to give a shoutout to Pianogy for a very insightful comment in my video about RAM for music production.
He basically said that sampled instruments are taking up more memory than non sampled synthesizers
Thank you for that comment
Also If you can add something useful to the video for other viewers, don’t hesitate to do so in the comments
[5]
What is the best DAW?
I’ll start with the question answer it immediately.
The best daw is the daw of your preference where you can work the quickest and most comfortable with.
I can’t tell you which DAW to use, but I can give you some guidelines and examples on choosing the best DAW for you.
[6]
Don’t listen to anyone else who says you need to work with ….
Every DAW has its strengths weaknesses.
I can’t tell you which DAW is the best.
If there was one DAW that was the best for everyone, everybody would use it.
[7]
There are a couple of different DAWs out there.
I will name a few, starting off with the bigger ones:
FL Studio
Logic Pro X
Ableton Live
Pro Tools
[8]
Less famous are:
Studio One
Reaper
Cubase
But there are other DAWS out there
[9]
FL studio started out as Fruity Loops.
In 2018 they released a Mac version. So it is available on Windows and Mac.
FL studio has a bit of an image problem, because a lot of producers don’t take the software seriously.
FL studio does things differently and that’s why a lot of people don’t like it.
It has also the image of being free, but I have yet to come across a legal free version.
To be honest I have never tried the software, so I cant really say much useful about it
But when I look at the price of the full version, 900 euro, I think you have better alternatives for less money.
flirp

The Logical Editor in Cubase lets you perform operations on whole tracks and objects in a Cubase project in one clean sweep! For example if you want to lower the velocity of all the hi hats in a midi drum track without changing the velocity of the other drums you can do it with a few clicks instead changing them one by one!

I'm a Logic user, and yes, the two things dragging it down are system overloads and the fact that lots of plugins no longer have a mix knob for some strange reason. Other than that though, I think it is probably the superior of the popular programs in design, functionality and overall workflow.

How would you compare these two DAWs? I can't decide between those two. I mostly do vocal arrangements and LOTS of audio layering, looping, etc. Not much MIDI, mostly audio. And I work on Windows.

Cubase is a complete DAW for any type of music style. It's user freindlyness and main window's all in all editing make it the most useful DAW for the professionals. If you want unlimited options for music making then Reaper is the solution. But it's learning curve is a bit steep. First give some time to learn the basics of Reaper. After a while you will love it . The options i reaper are unlimited for a minimum price one could afford.

Reaper is affordable and customizable, but seems very confusing at first. Thankfully, it is always being improved and there a re a lot of in depth tutorials to get you up and running.
@joetowers4804
@joetowers4804 5 лет назад
If it weren't for Reaper, I might not even entertain the notion of delving into music technology. All the rest seem too expensive to me. Not that they aren't worth it, but they are definitely a chunk of cash. I'm hoping to use my vacations to learn a bit more and use it professionally and not just as an amateur aficionado.
@joetowers4804
@joetowers4804 5 лет назад
@shamanbear3 It seemed confusing to me at first, probably because I expected to do some things a certaing way (like deciding what kind of track I wanted beforehand). I plan to go through all of Kenny´s tutorials and try to get a better hang of what Reaper can do.

@toribarron5700
@toribarron5700 5 лет назад
If you have experience in computer programming or web design, Reaper is a dream come true. But if you don’t want to spend a vast amount of time learning to configure it, it may be worth seeking other options. I find myself in Logic when I have a big project and don’t really know where it will take me. Reaper is great for specialized work, where you know what you need and want an efficient, tailored for you, workflow. I adore Reaper, but sometimes I don’t want to learn how to search for the question I need to ask the search engine to learn how to configure Reaper to my liking. You can always configure it, but figuring out how can take a hit out of your creativity while you would rather be playing with sound.

The prices you mentioned about Pro Tools are for the Ultimate version. The regular version of Pro Tools costs a lot less and has almost all the features of Ultimate except surround and number of channels. I've been using it for the past 15 years and I've tried all DAW's. In mixing territory there's no other like it, for music production you may be right but if you got some third party sw it's really powerful with the new implementations. About the bugs in Logic and S1 it's probably your system I use Logic and S1 here sometimes and never had those issues. About Studio One, I guess it really could be the only software nowadays that could make me leave PT for good I've been using it on some projects and the gap is narrowing down in each upgrade they release. So, I'm not sure if your review is accurate enough you should do a little more research and be a little less biased.

I also want to record audio and some external instruments. A big thing i don’t want to miss out on is any plug-ins/instruments to fully customize and contort the sounds to my liking. I also want learning the software to be as easy as possible/ not intimidating (but that’s not as important as sound customization). Any suggestions ?

I use Sonar VS-100 with a mixer/midi controller that came together with the software. The physical unit is quite impressive. The Cakewalk software is a tad primitive here and there, but it's got a ton of plug-ins. You could spend your life just exploring a major orchestra of instruments. It's a got a slight but occasionally annoying drop-out problem when you use a lot of small clips, but overall it's easy to use and you can certainly get excellent results with it. The unit and software together are very reasonably priced considering you also get a very nice desktop mixer.

I went with Reaper because it was cheap and you could use it for free nearly indefinitely. Reaper has about 9 million RU-vid tutorials as well. Reaper did do some buggy stuff in my old computer, which was grossly underpowered for music production to begin with. I don't know how much of the erratic behavior was Reaper vs how much was my now deceased Dell all in one 3048. Once I get a desktop with an I-7 9700 and 16gb of ram up in here, we'll see how Reaper behaves.

It seems these are 'mainly' for creating music from scratch directly from the software (pulling up a piano, bass in the software to create, ect) Is there something you would recommend for having the instruments already played (live music), just wanting to slightly edit and upload? I understand these softwares are able to do that, but just wondering if there might be a different route to go. Thanks again!

I am looking for a daw that support line6 pod farm and a usb midi keyboard. The only daw i can use for pod farm is audacity and reaper but in those programs i can't get my keyboard to work. Cubase is the only daw where i can use my keyboard but it does not work with pod farm even wile it came with pod farm. I feel like giving up and save a year again to get the fucusrite from scarlet. I am so depressed, think i go back to recording with cassette tapes again.

I'm torn between FL studio and Bitwig. The live style effect racks of bitwig are really intuitive to me but FL has a large user base and lots of resources for learning. For a decent version (producer edition) FL is much more affordable also. I wish someone would compare the lower cost editions as a starting point because the functions that differ between these and the full versions can often be the difference between being able to achieve what you want and not

@jhice_fr 5 лет назад
Well, I dont really use them regularly but here's what I can say : *LMMS* lmms.io/ is a kind of Fruity Loops I would say and you have *Ardour* ardour.org/ who is close to Cubase, the two are Open Source and multiplatform. _Pros :_ they feel like classic DAWs. _Cons :_ learning curve (not sure ;) ) Next to these you have another approach with the _Trackers_, coming from the 80's/90's on Atari and Amiga. The best one IMHO is *Renoise* www.renoise.com/ (not free but not really expensive and the demo version has quite the full capabilities) and *MilkyTracker* who is totally free milkytracker.titandemo.org/. These two ones are multiplatform. Many other trackers exist. _Pros :_ easy to learn at first time, if you like the tracker format. These softwares are very light and *can be executed on old or small machines*. _Cons :_ The interface can feel very small at first sight. Hope this helps ;)

Can you record video along with the audio track? If so, in which DAWs can you do that? I want to upgrade my You Tube channel from what it is now, where I record different parts into a Ditto Looper and then end up with full cover songs but with kind of crappy audio, to a channel where I do full covers but the screen is split four ways or more, and you can actually watch me play all the parts, not to mention the vocals coming in full range instead of instrument speaker frequency response lol With a Ditto Looper, there is no mixing, editing, etc. so I've been doing it the hard way, and I really look forward to getting my interface and getting started recording the right way, but I need the recordings to have video too so I can split screen my stuff . . . what do I need in order to accomplish this?
@DexxterClarkMusic
@DexxterClarkMusic 4 года назад
I've never tried editing with a daw. DAWs are generally made for music, not video editing, so I doubt that anyone does this. Some DAWs (Studio One for example) support importing a video so you can score music to the video, but I think that's where it ends

Like you said, the best DAW is the one you know how to use efficiently. Pick one and learn it well. I use Reaper. It's inexpensive to start (free if you are really too broke to pay) and low cost to buy when you are ready. It's written in C so it's fast and very easy on RAM and CPU. It's is updated often. It has a complete scripting language. The interface can be changed to work like Pro Tools or other DAWs. It can take time to learn and configure but the payoff is very fast workflow. I hate the MIDI editor in it. Last, unless you invest in a good audio interface the lag in recording can be a challenge for beginners.
