I used to collect different Zips and change my EDC every day, then a buddy gifted me a cheap China knockoff that had a neat art piece on it. I liked the art so much, and the fact that it was the first lighter that I received from another person, that I put a soft flame butane Zippo insert in it and it now lives on my belt pouch as my everyday carry.
@@Zippofanatic77outdoorsIt’s a pirate ship being attacked by a Kraken, nothing special at all but it’s the sentiment behind a gift piece sometimes that makes it more personally coveted.
I'm living in the equator country (Thailand). Thank you for your sandwish bag trick that prevent the evaporation a lot! It took a week or more for next refill.
Would like to see a video for beginners who want to collect vintage look Zippos the differences in years and models so we can learn the differences. Keep up the good work
At the moment, my favourite edc Zippo is a 41 replica black crackle. I love the feel of the coating and how grippy it is. Hinge is also super beefy and the shape feels good to me
Great video with awesome tips ZF! My EDC is a 1941 Replica Black Crackle with Z-plus double tourch butane insert. The fitting is perect. Here in the south of Brazil is not so cold as to interfere with the butane insert.
My EDC is a fluid insert in a titanium zorro-type case (I know, sacrilege LOL). Just cause I've found the o-ring in the case makes a huge difference, and my fluid lasts for two and a half weeks between refills using the lighter 5 or 6 times a day. Gamechanger! I wish zippo made like an updated armor modern model with o-ring. A guy can dream...
Nice ! I have a titanium war armor also. Very nice lighter. We’ve been saying that in the live stream for years. At least make a new insert that will be sealed when a regular zippo lid closes on it. Zorro inserts have the top widens a bit and the lid seals and always shuts perfectly flush and straight with no wiggle , why can’t zippo do that
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors Exactly! Then can even put the seal on the insert for all we care haha I feel like you're a more heavy user compared to myself. Have you used that Ti war armour with the o-ring and noticed a difference in fluid longevity?
@@F...G... it will last longer if u don’t use it. Don’t forget a full insert only has so many lites. So no matter if it’s sealed off completely or not I can only get a week and a half of life out of the fluid that fits in a insert. If I don’t use it obv it will last longer. But I’m a heavy user
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors That's what I was thinking, there's must be a level of use where the difference becomes less and less noticeable. Cheers, man!
i've wanted to change my everyday carry zippo to something more "generic" because of its sentimental value (it's engraved and i got it for my graduation) so i searched some auction sites and bought a what i tought to be brass zippo on a local auction clearance sale. i was somewhat skeptical when i first got my hands on it since solid brass oxidizes and it lost some of its color on the most stressed parts. so i read the timestamp (VII-91), looked into the catalog, and it turns out it's actually a gold plated one. it also came with a handmade case and the best thing is, it was only 8 bucks and it had 3 flints under the felt pad. it's not in the best condition (especially the insert, it has lost most of the coating), but at least i won't feel bad using it)
LOL You showed the one you dropped in a fire for an example of how they get used XD I love it My current set up is a '22 copper & vintage brass in my usual EDC rotation.
My edc broke on new years eve and i couldn’t decide what to buy,now watching this i made my mind, vintage brushed brass with slashes and a pipe insert for it
I guess I'm a nostalgic type, but I very much like the fact that I can know exactly when the case/insert was made. The easy dating system makes it possible to get an old Zippo for every important moment of your life. So I carry one that's built the month I got my drivers licence. Or meeting my wife. Or any of my kids being born. Etc. I like 'my Zippos in brass so I have removed the coating on quite a few of them. I get a beat up coated lighter that has a meaningful for me date stamp, for cheap as can be, remove the paint in a bath of acetone and there it is - another EDC. My first Zippo was in fact brushed chrome - for some reason this was the cheapest option back then and might also be today - which is weird, as chroming and brushing can not possibly be cheaper that just leaving it being brass as it was before chroming). I bought that one in France in 1997 and still have it), but these days I hardly ever carry anything but straight brass.
i carry a vintage 1996 brass Camel Zippo lighter that goes very well with my "vintage style" Camel cigarette case. i dont even smoke Camels but wen i was a kid i remember the Camel collection was a big deal. So i bought one that had never been struck. I paid 100 bucks for it. considering it doesnt leave my pocket and gets used religiously i feel it was well worth it.
My very first zippo is a classic brushed chrome dated I 14, but for sentimental reasons it's been retired from regular service. Gramps had the same type years and years ago, though he wore the finish right down to the brass. So for the winter months it's been a tumbled brass armor H 21 with the super thin finish accidentally polished off (oops), and it's original matching date insert. For the summer it's been a regular black crackle C 22 with a single torch. I am considering moving to a 41 or another armor, one that's more tarnish resistant.
Haha that’s a nice set up ! The bolted armor is just such a good zippo to look at. Plus the double torch. I can lite my cig from three feet away in a wind storm with the double torch. Did u find better butane? Or did u just it like in my video so u could use zippo butane
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors I got some "Vector" Brand at the Smoke Shop that works Perfect but it Has a Metal Filler nozzle on the Can that Leaks Half of it out while Filling. The Plastic Nozzles don't Leak when Filling. "Burns-O-Matic" Butane is Available at Lowes. It's a Much Bigger Can with a Plastic Filler tube & works just as Good.
@@len-zeplin480 nice glad u found some alternatives. If u want to fix the metal tip can cut off a plastic one from a junk bottle and slide it over top.
The info on this video is worth its weight in gold. You cover everything to deciding what Zippo to go! I agree with all of it and have one thing to add. If size is a concern, I find the 35 replica is a great option as it has the smallest footprint taking up the least amount of room. Btw, I forgot to let you know I got the package from you! It's great to have a 33 replica back in my pocket, losing my other one made me feel naked😕
Hey buds !! Thanks Ryan. Glad to hear all your stuff finally arrived safe and sound. Had to replace the cam spring on one of those inserts I can remember which one but hope she’s tight and springy now !
I live in Korea。 Weather here is very extreme between Super hot or Super cold depend on seasons. In winter, standard fluid insert works fine. But in summer, It is better to carry butaine inserts.
2012 armored sterling with the pipe insert without the cap. It produces the most fire. Custom emblem and foot long Chain with a heavy ball at the end, because you know I don’t want to lose it. It’s a grown mans fidget toy and lighter.
Soo if I understand you correctly.. if someone were to 3D print a thin bottom for zippos to replace the felt, there may be a market for it? 🤔 thanks for the tip! Need to grab me one of those pipe inserts!
Thanks for the videos, they have been very helpful for getting into zippos. I had an offtopic question. I recently purchased an armored wing arabesque shell zippo. I would like to carry it once in a while, but its outer shell is very fragile Any thought on how to protect it or should I give up on the idea?
Still have the first one I bought, ('98) black parkerized finish, standard insert. Though unlike the beat up black one in the vid, my case isn't brass under the finish, it's shiny silver, and unlike the new ones my hinge was finished (though use has worn most of it off)
Just bought a black ice unicorn and a dual torch Insert I quit using them cause the fluid ones are always empty before I use it but I live in a warm area year round
Hi ZF! Can i have your humble oppinion regarding Barrett Smythe series ( precisely Taurus 2008)? I have just started diggin' through the Zippo world and You seem like a competent person to help me with this "issue"😊 Thank You in advance & all the best!!!
Barret smythe zippos are awesome. Every one is a cool design. He only ever made so many for them. And in the future I see them being a good investment for your collection. They are still affordable. Get them now. In 20 years I predict them To go up in value.
I swap between a Venetian brass dated I-XXI that my Sister gave me for my 18th Birthday and a Brushed chrome dated J-19 that i brought myself a few years back B)
I EDC a 1989 produced vintage look with slashes in brushed brass. Beautiful but not tacky, and at no cost to functionality. Fits neatly in the watch pocket in jeans. Carried trough Finnish defence forces service by me and my father before me. The hinge is a little loose but other than that and the patina its still like new. Used plenty of alternate fuels in it from moonshine to gasoline directly from the fuel tank of a Bandvagn 206, GI style. Gotta keep it in an inner pocket during winter though. It wont light when its real cold.
Nice buds ! I’m edc a vintage look also right now. Cool that your using your sentimental one also. I’ve had mine in the outside pocket of my coat in minus 50 Celsius many times and always lites first strike. Maybe it’s your fluid or the way it’s packed. Might need to change your wick and clean your chimney. The soot causes it to clog up.
Hey Fanatic new sub here from the States. Looking for my first zippo. I am leaning toward a 41. Question does a pipe insert fit in a replica 41? Thanks
Hey snoop ! Yes it does ! I rock my gold plated pipe insert in the 41 all the time. Do not try to put a 41 insert in a regular zippo it will get completely stuck lol
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors thanks for the quick reply ,I didn't know zorro would work with it cool. Also been loving the videos I'm just getting into zippos and yours have been the most helpful !
Hey ZF, I’m thinking of getting a Venetian. Will it wear nicely as an edc or will it turn a different color? I’m planning to implement all of your tricks, freezer bag, s pattern, bacon cotton etc. Thanks!!!
Hey Patrick !! Your getting a Venetian brass ? The brass will tarnish very nicely. And if u edc it , it will get what I call perfect tarnish which is a dull gold colour that doesnt show scratches
i personally never like/want an armoured zippo, mine has many dents in it and i like it, gives it character and some age and i like the vibe, its like a beater car, dont get discouraged if your favourite zippo gets a few lil dents (mine has a huge dent on the top of lid of when i durability tested mine and i love it), thats why we have lifetime warranty for if the time comes and we need a repair/replacement.
Hee Zippo Fanatic! I've been an occasional viewer for a couple of years now. I've a questions and I just choose this video to ask it. Since a few months I EDC a zippo again, a simple 2020 chrome one. Also the one I try some tricks on now and then and I don't start crying anymore when I drop it haha. Now with this model I've the problem my insert keeps sliding up, just after one trick and also from just opening. Now I don't want to just start bending metal and I wanted to ask you what would be the best way to make the insert sit tighter in the body again? I notice my other more expensive zippo is much tighter. Greetings from the Netherlands.
And about these rubber seals. I ordered a couple of Temu for 3 euro's but that was a waste in my opinion. I had to refill it more often and it was wet all the time when I pulled it out. Since a couple of weeks I now do your sandwich trick and that works very nice. I still keep the original cotton seal in place but it adds ''days!'' between refills!! 😄
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors thought the problem is more extensive with the sliding. I’ve a feeling I need to bend the insert so it sits more snug? Again it’s still crawling out after just a few openings
@@tonnynijholt7090 take a dime put it in the bottom of your insert then slowly twist it so it’s widening the bottom of the insert. Then take your case. Give it a couple firm squeezes with thumb and finger on the half the insert slides into. The insert will be tight after that. And if it’s a little snug don’t worry. It will work it’s way to where it likes to be.
so i did the sandwich bag trick for my edc(matted blue with a gold pipe insert) and now it shoots out a HUGE flame...did i do something wrong? love the videos by the way!
No that’s normal not that it’s more air tight it will make the flame bigger when u first fill it. Lite it a few times will go back down to normal. Or just trim your wick down to desired flame height if the flame u have is to big.
@Zippo Fanatic 77 Outdoors that's good news! Thanks! Watching your videos has me digging threw all my stuff looking for zippos lol...keep up the good work!
Can you buff and polish the rose gold? It’s really pretty and relatively inexpensive so if the finish is durable I just have to get one. But I do like to keep them shiny.
Lol it’s rose gold u don’t have to polish it, for it does not tarnish. Bro just get it. Rose gold is my fav. Very durable always looks fresh. Your fingerprints will get all over it thats about it
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors exactly why I use it! Perfect for cigars. I find that the single jet might be even better for an even light. Although I usually EDC 2 zippos, I’ll usually carry a street chrome with a pipe insert just for fidgeting and tricking. Thanks for the dope content bro! Keep it up!
@@PyroMite0213 the single torch is def better on butane. Lasts way longer. But I live off the Great Lakes always windy here. That double torch always stays lit gets my cig even if it’s not near it lol barely gotta line it up when I’m walking the dog. How’s the forced patina looking ? What was your method?
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors I personally think it turned out great! I took a matte black brass case and hit it with a sanding wheel until I achieved a rough bare metal, then I sprayed it with a salt vinegar mixture and sealed it in a tub for 5 hours. After the patina was achieved I applied a clear coat and carried! Funny enough I was actually up on Lake Erie this past weekend and it was by my side the wind was pretty gnarly and it rained like a mofo, the jet insert came perfectly in handy!
Hey Fanatic, hello 😅 A bit of an offtopic question but I really don't know anybody that knows zippos the way you do 😅 So I just found a local guy near me who sells a Wild West Western Attire 1862 for practically no money. But the strange thing that I've noticed is that the writings on the insert are sideways not horizontal as it should be. Also they are a bit on top of each other like... like the machine that manufactured writings, was broken or something. What is the case here? I can send you an image somewhere, if that makes interest to you :) Thanks in advance. P.S. +1 sub, of course 😊
Whats the best one for me to carry when i lifht my smokes and cigars i use to have a bunch got stolen i had an acdc crome one and a brass one but the brass was heatful but after a month it atated to trash i want something fancy maybe crome again how are the buetane insert ps glad i found yitr new chanel
I been experimenting with making my own fuel formulas and have successfully made some of my own fluids that outperform even my zippo fluid. Especially in old ass lighters with weak flint wheels or wicks not positioned in the best place to catch a spark. All I do is add very small amounts of kerosene to pure hydro-treated naptha. Seriously 5% TOPS, I tend to stay in the 2.5-3% range for my own purposes. Less kerosene = more volatile, evaporates quicker, vaporlocks easier, but the trade off is that you can light pure naptha in below freezing weather without fail every time. But without kerosene, at room temperatures, the naptha is so volatile that you constantly get vapor lock leading to double strikes. How much kerosene you add should really be dependent on the local environment. For summer time hot months 5% kerosene additive works best - 3-4% for regular weather, 2-3% if not less for some of the coldest places: I wish I had known this years ago. I had rarely used my naptha to fill my zippos BECAUSE of the quick evaporation and vaporlock despite how cheap it was. Swore by zippo fuel over all else. Until one day I had a chance conversation with a man who had previously worked in the lighter fluid industry specifically helping companies formulate lighter fluids. Although he would not tell me any specific formulas he let loose that lighter fluid is just naptha/light petroleum distillate that has been mixed with secondary fuel additives such as kerosene or lamp oil to adjust the flash point optimally for spark ignition. And by god he was right! It’s the missing link! I’m seriously kicking myself for not knowing this sooner because it has brought back some of my “drawer” lighters I never carried due to them often requiring a double strike. It also makes me question whether zippo is using kerosene or another oil as their additive because as soon as I add the kerosene and then shake the solution up it starts smelling IDENTICAL to my zippo fuel which always had a uniquely gassy smell to me.
I love my Armor and my 35 replica but I cannot stop using my 41 brushed brass with a sandwich bag, actually cut from a large thick zip lock bag. It just looks and feels great.
