Im from New York City and we have one of the largest subway or metro systems in the world but the European systems look more clean and beautiful compared to ours. The former Soviet Union Metros seem to have the oldest rolling stock or train cars. I guess you can attribute that to budget constraints. But none the less all these systems are quite beautiful.
In Moscow ther is Free WiFi on bord all trains, the newest ones have USB charge and interactive screens with metro map network. Many stations are litteraly pieces of art, beautiful cathedrals under streets. It is very clean, safe and well maintained. Trains run every 1,20 minutes. Moscow metro is, with no doubt, the best underground system I've ever taken.

The Moscow metro is just enormous! I think that the most beautiful metro stations are located in Moscow and St. Petersburg. They are also the most comfortable. But I am from St. Petersburg, so my opinion is not objective. :D My top 5 without Russian metro: 1. Budapest 2. Prague 3. Berlin 4. Vienna 5. Stockholm
my favourite is Madrid, simply the best organised system, very simple to use and orientate, and well integrated with the cercanías system. Also liked Milan and Moscow from the video, the latter simply is stunningly beatiful and unique.
The London Underground... Opened: 1863 Stations: 270 Length: 250 Miles (400km) Number of trains: 543 Passengers per day: 5,000,000 Passengers 2017/18: 1,357,000,000
@@SlothDemon-fi3pi Perhaps. Maybe. But Vienna is the best city to live in the world nine times in a row! One of the reasons is excellent public transportation. @LuckerHD is a little nervous.
Berlin has two equal sytems: The U-Bahn and the S-Bahn. Both of them driving partly underground, on ground and as elevated lines. So the network is much much bigger than described in this video.
I've been to Istanbul in october and i was suprised what fantastic metro system it has, everything is simplified even if you use it first time, price is really decent (0,4 euros for one ride, and for example next ride within 2hrs is 2x cheaper), actually the best you can imagine in every aspect. For example i've been to Paris in 2017 and i was really suprised in what condition it was, everything was run down and far from even decent level.
You were surprised? What would you expect to us? Riding camels? Grow up it's 2019 and istanbul has a huge traffic problem. Over 16 million people live in this city this metro system isn't enough even.
I use the London tube every day but my favourites are Athens and Paris. Athens especially is really modern and very beautiful. I’ve been to many countries and these are my favs.
When showing the map of the London Underground you kinda have to show the entire thing, not just Zone 1, the scale of it is huge! I definitely think the London Tube is the best in the world hands down.
My opinions from the metros I've travelled with: My city is Budapest I like our metro here, you can meet old and new in one place. The stations of the old M1 from 1896 and the brand new M4 are awesome. Prague metro system is similar to ours. Well organized and effective together with the surface transportation. I like Prague in general very much. The most beautiful metro stations for me are Stockholm's cave like stations and on Lisbon's red line. I like the antique feeling in some of the lines in Paris and London, the U1 in Berlin, and the old train sets of München. I pretty much disliked the depressed feeling in Rome's metro as you can't see through the window from the huge amount of graffiti and it's overcrowded. In Naples the metro is the only reliable source of transportation because travelling on the surface is the chaos itself in any form. (except maybe the funiculars, too) Public transportation is just useless there. The rest of the cities I've been to have decent metro service, too. I've seen Belgrade's one and only metro station which functions as a stop for commuter trains and is pretty run down. A city of that size would deserve a metro.
Rome's map is missing C line (completely automatized, w/ San Giovanni station with an exhibit of what was found during the line construction, which is still in progress). And B line is the only one with the few older dirty looking trains shown on the video (a rate of an old train out of five on that line). The main issue is the frequency at rush hour and floodings in case of not so rare monsoon-like rains that occur especially in fall (this last one applies almost exclusively to A line). So yeah, to sum up, an old line, the newest yet still in progress and the one that occasionally gets flooded. But with some flaws, too
Prague of course. 1. Sentiment 2. Huge modernization - i.e. fully automatic trains 3. Very good informative time tables 4. Whole system is covered - above ground tracks are leaded in artificial tunnels, even as part of the bridge over deep valley (Nusel's bridge) 5. Reporting - "Finish the exit and boarding, doors are closing..." :-)
The London tube is by far my favorite. In my opinion all of the London Public Transportation is the greatest. You can basicaly get everywhere you want in the city, Without a long waiting time.
Thank you for the nice and interesting video with the overview of so much underground transport services. I like most Berlin U- and S-Bahn with large Straßenbahn-System (Tram) in Eastern part of Berlin, then Paris Metro and London Subways. Not to forget Vienna U-Bahn and Prague Metro, where both cities have extraordinairy trameay sytems. So best wishes and good health, Tim, to you and all others.
Madrid metro for me is the best. You have plenty of space on it, it's never crowded and you can go wherever you want on Madrid. It's very fast and modern. I visit Madrid all the time and enjoy it's beautiful Metro system. T10 card rules. :)
@@leavethisisadeadaccountree2646 Those lines that you say, aren't metro lines. They are train lines of."Cercanias" of the RENFE (National Railways of Spain). The metro of Málaga has two lines: Line 1 and line 2.
@@leavethisisadeadaccountree2646 The lines of "Cercanías" are of short distance and belong to RENFE. The lines of metro are urban lines and they are of the autonomic goverment (Junta de Andalucía). Greetings from Seville
First of all, there's no Istanbul. There's Konstantinopolis. And secondly, they're so gypsies and will never be European City unless Turkey return the City to the legal owners. Greeks.
it is nice but less useful as others because of it is size. The construction takes forever, I wish the whole Warsaw would be covered by metro, not in the foreseeable future though.
Anche Roma ha la metro automatica, la linea c. Poteva mettere foto più belle della metro di Napoli. La mappa della metro di Roma inoltre era sbagliata e il video mostrava immagini di una linea suburbana, non della metro di Roma
I know the following systems from personal use in the past: Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Istanbul, London, Madrid. Milano, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Toulouse and Vienna. I rate Madrid the best, because you have clean, large, wide stations, you can pretty much get everywhere and at almost all times. Rolling stock and stations are modern and stations are even air conditioned (take that Barcelona!). Barcelona is a dirty system, but at least a few lines are somewhat modern. Pickpockets are everywhere though. Berlin is old and also dirty. I much more used the S-Bahn there. Hamburg was mostly okay, but some parts smell really bad (piss) London is pretty good, though these "worm" shaped trains have a low ceiling. I like the Oystercard system as much as the contactless system of Madrid. Milano I don't remember much, since the last time I was there, a lot will have changed. Munich seemed pretty good to me. Some trains are a bit dated. Paris is creepy. Only tourists and pickpockets seem to use it. It's dated and badly maintained. Only line 14 is efficient, the others can't travel fast because the stations are far too close together. This system needs serious rework, along with the RER lines. Horrible altogether. Stockholm is pretty nice, together with the commuter trains. Though I wish there was a possibility to buy full-day tickets (the ones you can get are only valid for 45 minutes afair. Toulouse is pretty nice. It's a VAL system that I like. Vienna is also pretty efficient. Though some stations nowadays look dated. But they are well kept and clean.
Ive used the Paris subway system in late april this year and even though its 1 out of the 2 subway systems (the other being the Brussels subway bc im born in Belgium and sometimes i have to visit Brussels) that i've used, i find the Paris subway system really good and efficient and the price is okay in my opinion. Aside from the price, i find that the subway stations in Paris are often the same style but some stations have their own unique style and the Paris subway system is really clean in my opinion.
@@TheWezelmans Line1 smells like piss everywhere. And in general, many stations are really crazy, go down, go up, go over, go down .... Think this is from adding new lines, not rebuilding
In terms of station design, Stockholm without a doubt. I just LOVE the cave-like stations. In terms of efficiency, I would say Madrid. Nothing fancy-looking, but very good and big network, high frequencies, and very clean, just as it should be. Combine that with the pretty good suburban train network (Cercanias) which serves parts of the city, and you have what is probably one of the best city rail systems in the world. That being said, I'm tempted to say Vienna has overall the best public transportation among the cities I have visited so far. Sure, the underground network isn't that big compared to, say, Madrid, London or Paris, however it works well, and it is compounded by a very extensive, high-frequency tram system as well as a number of bus lines which serve the city extremely well. Not to mention that it is rather cheap, a monthly pass is only 45 euro.
Hey, nice vid. But what about the metro in Lausanne, Switzerland ? Certainly not the oldest nor the busiest, but the steepest in Europe 😁 Otherwise,my favorite on is Stockholm.
i have tried the Metro's in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Budapest, Vienna and Prague so far. I have to say the Moscow Metro is the best. Not only do they have the most unique and beautiful platforms; it's the only Metro i know in the world that is considered a Tourist Attraction!
I’ve been on a few of these systems. The most pleasant ones were Lyon, Madrid and Copenhagen as they weren’t too overcrowded, had modern vehicles and the Madrid one even had air con. I also enjoyed using the underground in huge cities such as London and Paris as they’re lively and full of character.
Ford Escape Why does it come as a surprise you? You Americans had that weird habit of naming small towns after capitals of European countries during XVIII-XIX centuries.
I lived in Paris for 20 years, so I'm familiar with the metro there. Stations are frequent and convenient, and the system is extensive, as well as having fairly cheap tickets. The downside: frequent labor strikes and dirty stations. London is great: extensive, fast and conveinient. The downside: crazy high prices and rather frequent equipment failures. Nothing is perfect.
Sometimes the noise is unbearable, I don't really like those deafening screechy sounds that it makes, other than that I like how extensive the network is.
@@Robin____ Have to disagree. It's got the best frequency for any service but apart form that Irs not actually that good. There's some which are alot better and London is definitely one. It's not as bad as some on this list as well.
Agreed. The london Underground isn’t even that dirty (see stations like Canary Wharf or Westminster), and also it is literally a tourist attraction. Also, yes the noise is loud to younger people but you get used to it and it is fine.
Lisbon is my favorite: easy to use, modern, main interchange stations even have moving sidewalks! Some stations are also works of modern art with bright colors and bold geometric design.
Well, essentially they've built it at the expense of the rest of the country. People don't have decent hospitals in most of Portugal, and billions are put into Lisbon. A shame.
Since I visited London as a 12 year old boy I have been fascinated by metro systems and metro maps .Since then I ‘ve experienced the systems of Paris, Brussels, Munchen, Budapest, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, New York, Boston and Haifa and collected a lot of subway maps. To say what is the best system is not easy, accessibility, by stairs, escalators, elevators, user friendly stations and tunnels, the trains themselves, noise, violence, graffiti, cleanliness, safety, ticket or card use and availability, price, location of the stations , frequency, operating hours, display maps and apps of the network, it all has it’s influence. Seeing all those interesting videos and comments, I would vote for the Stockholm metro
The metro in Moscow is the best in Europe and getting even better every year. 18 new stations opened in 2018. Modern trains with wi fi, noice reduction and air conditioning. Many stations look a state of art, with marble and mosaic pannos. It is extremly safe too, and friendly. Here is a lot of envious comments from angry nazi Ukrainians. Well. Just do not mind them. I visited many european capitals. You can not even compare their metro systems to Moscow's, with all due respect. Now there is the longest circle line in the World under construction in Moscow. Under fast and efficient construction I must say. Without stealing money. Just highly efficient work.
The new Moscow circle line (just first stations, it is under construction), take a quick look (taken by a,student a few days ago) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z-WmXIEp4Pg.html
warsaws my favourite, the picture there at the end didnt do it justice, all the centrally located stations are built to the exact same specification, from the station up to the esculators and to the outside, only difference is the colour of the mural on the wall depicting the name of the station. its spotlessly clean, when i was there i never seen one bit of rubbish, and its not to busy.
@@achpRu of Course i am, i even checked it on the wikipedia, 2nd line is going to be extended, which alot of people know and line M3, which confused me at 1st
I love in New York and these subways ALL are better, more spacious and cleaner than ours. They also run a lot quieter. I can't believe that some are driverless!! When they mention that here, everybody freaks out. If the people here saw some of these metro systems in action , maybe they wouldn't be so afraid. Also, they have doors that keep people from getting too close to the trains, and if we got some of those, people might feel safer. Great video!!!
Madrid. Cheap, efficient, generally very clean and great coverage of the city. Many lines (unlike other cities that just have a system of 2-3 intersecting lines). London is the quaint old Mother, but ridiculously expensive. For the beauty of some stations, Moscow. The system in Istanbul was quite good too. In Italy, only Milan can be part of the ranking. Paris very disappointing, but excellent coverage of tbe inner city and the suburbs, with the rer.. Berlin is good too. Bcn also great. . And Bilbao an Valencia... if only the last trains were not at 11pm and the displays on the panels didn't change for waiting times every 2 minutes.
Москва, Санкт-Петербург, Лондон, Глазго (на севере Британии находился город, который пишится на русском вроде так😂), Париж, Стокгольм, Хельсинки, Осло, Копенгаген, Амстердам
I would have said Berlin or Istanbul, but however... I prefer Paris. 😉 Why? Because of the diversity of trains between lines and even on the same line (RER A, C, E, L, line 14), mostly. Also because of how wide the nework is, but unlike London lets you choose between fast commute (RER), slow (lines 10, 12, 7bis...) and medium speed (13 and 14) , instead of just having stations too far from one another. And its operation times, even in distant suburbs, isn't tyat bad either. Even trains are included as part of the Transilien with the RER lines and some are quite good (lines L and N in particular). Apart from that, yes it's not clean, yes it's often late, yes the ticket system sucks although it's going to be replaced next year, yes the two companies (RATP and SNCF) hate each other and don't communicate with one another (in Châtelet-les Halles digital timetables of RER line D aren't exposed because it's RATP-controlled and the other company doesn't share the informations), however very few cities have such big networks to handle and they improved in the past couple years x)
Paris Metro is great, and I personally love the RER. We do have National Rail services in London that are similar to 'express' lines (e.g. between Waterloo and Richmond, you could take either the slower and cheaper District line or the faster and more expensive South Western Railway), but they are not on the standard tube map ;-). I just wish Parisians would finally start taking contactless card payments on the network
@@sergeilondoner5373 aah, that's why for the express! I only went to London once, but I looked at the map for hours, and the shape of the tube is just amazing x) and despite all the problems, the RER is still of great use indeed in my opinion! :) I don't even know the word contactless card , this shows how unaware of it we are I guess... if you mean the oyster card, we have the Navigo although it's very hard for tourists to be informed about it, if you mean Visa card some machines don't even take some types of cards and it sucks I totally agree -.-
The number 5 can be full of pickpockets, the 7 bis makes the most HORRIBLE sound you've heard and stalingrad on the number 2 is dirty, apart from that, it's good
My favorite metro system in Europe is Stockholm because the stations that look like caves look really cool and elaborate. This is just based on my viewing as I have not actually been to Europe
The Istanbul Metro is kinda safe to me cuz it has those doors for protection and prevention for falling off the platform... And do you live in Florida? Lol
9:52 Wow! That subway station in Istanbul is really squeaky clean and futuristic looking! Metro stops in New York City can only DREAM of looking half that good.
