The thing that pisses me off about the PS5 storage situation is while transferring games to the extended drive you cannot leave the screen. You are stuck until complete. They need to fix that. On Series X you can do other things while transferring.
I never thought I'd need an external hdd this early into the consoles life cycle. It's pathatically small. I was shocked when it gave me a warning that there isn't enough space when I wanted to download Returnal which is the first triple A Ps5 game I ever downloaded. Before that I was using it to finish up my ps4 backlog.
It is really pathetic the storage it comes with. Its advertised as 825gb but the os takes up more than 200gb. I checked and you really only get 550gb. And I don’t want to hear the fanboys defending this.
i planned for this years ago. i bought two 4 TB hard drives. one for xbox. one for playstation. once i saw how big games were getting, i thought it would be smart to plan ahead. here we are today all ready to go.
It’s not “pathetically small” in perspective it’s double the amount of space that the PS4’s had and with that being said 1TB is a lot of space, the main problem is that games nowadays are MASSIVE asf with some being close to 200GB at that point you can only fit like 3-4 AAA games or like 30 indie games that range from 2-10GB 😂
Same, I got mine on November 22nd from Best Buy after 10 days of agonizing disappointments. I got back into coffee from that hunt and I wouldn’t change a thing, I love my PS5.

@@DJNICO120 I bought (after research) a SAMSUNG T5 Portable SSD 500GB months ago from Best Buy at the time it was $45. That T5 loads games extremely fast you won't even notice it being on that drive and now I have more than enough space. You can also upgrade to the 1TB if you needed more space. Trust me it was beyond worth it.

Black Friday’s in more than half a year and most likely during the summer the ps5’s expansion bay will be unlocked so you might want to use a m.2 drive anyways so it directly increases your ps5 storage instead of transferring games to and from an external drive
The bulk of games in my library are PS4 games, so for me personally I went with the WD My Passport 4TB (in Sky Blue) for $99. Sure it's an HDD, but transferring a game and playing it natively is always faster than deleting and redownloading games. It helps that's I only play 1-2 games at a time, so I don't have the need to hop around too much or have everything in my collection ready to go at a moments notice. Jake - you are the best. I recalled this video from a year ago, and my son and I just watched it together to help solve our storage problem for PS5. I think the external storage is the best option because the internal heat in the PS5 is crazy and, despite the heat sink, I have to believe adding more internal memory would only add to the heat. An SSD transfers superfast is not really than much of an inconvenience. I like the transfer back and forth concept. Take care of yourself, amigo - Rob. Anyone remember the good old days when you bought a $20 memory card and that held your game memory and when you just put the game in and played it without having to install it. Those were the days
SSD is the way to go and since we are all looking at external storage that means we all play a lot of games. Do not get anything less than 2TB especially since we don’t know how much storage the new upcoming PS5 games are going to need. :)
I got a 2t HDD for ps4 games I would still want to play on PS5. I was hoping to get a 1t Sabrent, but you make a valid argument. I'll prob keep saving up to get a 2t ssd

Hey Jake, just here for the support. You helped me get my PS5 back in March. Thanks again. Just to let you know, my PS5 automatically updates PS4 games on my external ssd drive that is connected to it. Check it out in the Notifications on your PS5 it will tell you which games were updated.
I have the Crucial X8 2 TB portable SSD. Got it for $219 on Amazon. But there’s a caveat, it is one of the drives that crashes if you put your PS5 in “Rest Mode” . I found a post on Reddit that gives you the site to download the latest firmware for the SSD chip. I don’t put my PS5 in Rest Mode so I can’t confirm that the firmware works but plenty of Reddit users said it worked for them.

Awesome video! I was debating on the size of the external ssd I should get. I just got a 1tb ssd. I was going to pay extra to get the 2tb (approx $100), but i figured, 1tb would be plenty for the ps4 games i want to play on the ps5. The $100 I saved by going for the 1tb, i will use to upgrade the actual INTERNAL memory of the ps5 so i can store more ps5 games when Sony announces compatible nvme drives this summer! Best of both worlds (1tb external, and hopefully a 2tb internal expansion to the ps5)

I got tired of waiting for the restock and just bought it off someone from Craigslist for 650. Still new and great condition. I will sell my PS4 base model very soon.
what i dont like about the external storage situation on playstation is how games from the external hard drive leave information for each game on the internal drive on and it takes up space and i wish playstation would change that to stay on the external hard drive, to see what im talking about if you're not aware of it safely disconnect your external hard drive and go into your internal storage you will see all the content left over for each game that is on the external hard drive until its plugged back in then it won't show anymore, it happens both on ps5 and ps4 when the external hard drive is removed
At those pruces, you're better off getting an internal SSD that you can play games straight off of. External drives aren't worth it unless you like to switch games between consoles for whatever reason which 99% of people don't do anyways. You can find a 1TB internal drive for like $100 now
I have the "Seagate backup plus hub" (6TB version) you linked in your description (not on your recommendation, just coincidentally). The PS5 refuses to format it for use as extended storage. Error message: "Can't format this USB drive as USB extended storage. Use a USB drive that satisfies the following conditions: > Supports SuperSpeed USB (or faster) > Capacity of 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum > Directly connected to your PS5" Thinking it might be the 'directly connected to your PS5' part as it has a built in USB hub.
Totally worth it got a Seagate 2tb for my ps4 and now I can wipe it and put it on my ps5. It worth transferring because you using the solid state of the ps5 instead of the ps4 using the ps4 games off the hard drive which is slower on ps4.

Spend a lot of time picking out an external HD, once the new PS5 software was released. Then saw your video, confirmed my purchase! Going with WD_Black P50 HDD, mostly to transfer/store PS4 games. Not going to splurge for SSD right now, as internal PS5 drive expansion is coming that will be even better. Thanks, man! Finger guns for life!
Hay bud have a question I have the same HD hard drive do you safely remove the hard drive before putting your system on rest mode or complete shut it off ? Since it's a hard drive does it turn off safely when the system goes on rest mode?
Good. Cause I have the Samsung T5 2TB SSD drive in black i bought about 1.25 years ago for my PS4 PRO. But whenever I'm able to snatch up a PS5, I'll just load all my games onto the T5 and hook it up to the PS5 and all should be good. This is great news.
